How To INSULATE A Van Conversion

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I will be sharing how to insulate a van conversion, as I build my Nissan NV200 small van into a camper van. Despite being a lot of work, insulating a van is incredibly important as a way of keeping heat in and stopping the build up of condensation which can cause rust and just be a general nuisance in metal vans.

After emptying the van, I started by removing the 6 black panels that came around the sides. Behind these are cavities which I lined with Thermawrap Foil Bubble Wrap Insulation, glued on with trimfix High Temperature Contact Adhesive, then filled them with loft insulation - I used Diall Recycled Plastic Bottle Insulation. This is similar, but a better alternative (in my case) to standard fibreglass loft insulation. Being non-toxic and safe to handle, it was really easy cutting pieces of insulation to size and stuffing them into the van walls. After that, I taped a large piece of foil insulation over the top of the panel with aluminium foil tape.
I did this for all 6 panels, and then went on to insulate the van ceiling. Again, I used Thermawrap Foil Insulation, glued on with Trimfix Contact Adhesive and laid this in between the beams. I filled the beams with spray foam insulation. Keep an eye out for my next video which shows the ceiling insulation, carpeting and ply-lining in much more detail.
I also glued thermawrap around the 6 metal panels around the sides of the van. Eventually I will carpet the van and the foil insulation will all be hidden, however having slept in the van in different conditions and temperatures last year I knew that condensation regularly forms on these panels as they have no cavity between them and the outside. Now they have a layer of insulation, they shouldn’t condensate.
Having done all of this, I ended up with a very silver inside to the NV200, but it’s only temporary. The important groundwork has been done, and now I can proceed with carpeting the van.

I see people stuffing metal cavities with insulation and all I can think of is the metal conducting the cold or heat through itself. To me it seems like putting insulation inside a pipe and expecting the other side of the pipe to be less cold of hot. Am I missing something?

Thanks, but check for leaks where? And where would a plastic moisture barrier fit into it as I haven't added any walls or cavities? I've tested the insulation over many months and it works very well at keeping condensation away. Plus I'm not living in the van, just using it for approx 30 nights each year.

I found your van videos quite by accident and I am now subscribed and will watch the rest. You are very thorough and this is the first build where I have seen what you are doing to insulate, and that is great. Too many videos show the building of the interior with no mention of what is behind the walls, and I believe this to be critical. Thank you for including this very important part. It sounds like you do not live in the US where I live and I am curious to know if you camp in warmer weather, and if so, will this insulation be too hot? My other question, which you may answer later is, are you keeping track of the net weight gain of your van? This would also be good to know. Thanks again. Very nice work.

Thanks :) It's not really a vapour barrier in the traditional sense; I stuck it on because the thin metal gathered so much condensation. With the van carpeted too there's no condensation any more, but if I lived in the van I'd definitely consider a proper vapour barrier.

Have you checked inside the sliding door for water leakage? I haven’t pulled the handles off yet to silicone them however, looking from the inside of that latch, I can see the light not just around the edges, but through the mechanism. I am worried that water is going to come in through there. As you say, it looks as though the leakage around that handle was known and accounted for. But if it was known and accounted for the engineers, probably weren’t concerned that additional water can come in through the mechanism, not just around where the latch meets the metal skin. If you were monitoring these comments, I would really appreciate any information you can give me. I am to the point now that it’s time to pull those latches off and after I do that I’m going to wash the car and see what kind of leakage I get. If it still leaks, then I may not fully insulate the door and just allow the water to drain down to the bottom.

Hi Sarah, if it was a large van (i.e. a sprinter) then I'd probably choose closed cell spray insulation, but if it was a small camper then I'd try and find the insulation with the best insulating properties/highest r-number. Whilst I believe what I've done will be enough to keep condensation greatly reduced for my uses, if I lived in it would additionally consider a dry heat source (diesel heater) and a fan in the ceiling for ventilation. Thanks, James

Gluing bubble foil wrap directly to metal IS NOT insulation. At best an overpriced R value of .5-1. The product is a radiant barrier and REQUIRES an air gap without it you just pissed away money on overpriced bubble wrap. Polyiso foam board glued to the ceiling is the correct way to insulate. You could use “non foil”, simple, shipping grade bubble wrap or thin foam wrap for difficult non flat odd shaped areas to provide a thermal break

  • @LensOfJames

Hi, completely understand where you're coming from. I don't live in the van, so it's really just about stopping condensation when I do sleep in the van, which the bubble wrap insulation does perfectly. Just a point - I didn't put polyiso board on the ceiling. It's foil bubble wrap with thin plywood over the top, again to stop condensation dripping on my head in the morning, which it also does well. There are many ways to insulate vans, with different methods suitable for different setups and usages :)
