How to Install Springs on a MK6 VW Golf, R, GTI - [PART 1]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Come along on my journey to remove my lowering springs and install the oem springs. This procedure seems simple, but became complicated really fast. I apologize for the jumps in the removal timeline - I wasnt sure I would get the job done in one weekend, so I skipped filming some of the passenger's side...
I hope you like this video and hope it helped. In the next video, I'm going to install the oem springs on the driver's side strut, then reinstall that on the car. I will also install the rear springs (super easy!).

That first broken nut was being turned clockwise @4:21 !! PB IS YOUR FRIEND here, broke it out but too late for the nuts though! If it doesnt come loose with a couple taps w rubber mallet some PB and a 3/4" socket extension then DO NOT force it!! Use a propane torch and apply moderate heat, moving between the nut and lowest part of the bolt just enough to warm the metal at the threads , THEN saturate with PB, particularly where the nut meets the bolt. Cooling the metal with PB makes its penetration even deeper to ease loose the nut.

So to tighten the nut at the top of the strut do you need a back up on the socket?

I know hindsight is a beautiful thing. If you're going to remove the bottom control arm ,you should have just removed the single nut on the ball joint and break the joint with separation tool. no need to undo 3 nuts. Still a brilliant video

I used a 1/4" ratchet square end to use as a spreader on the strut base.

I need some help here.. I have a 2012 Golf R. I had my buddy’s shop lower it(just springs) and now I’m having major auto correct or sway bar issues ..basically if I’m on the highway on a curve going right or the steering wheel at the half way point(going right that is) it completely shifts on me or jerks it self back into place and my traction light comes on.. any help would be appreciated..

Not sure if you've fixed it already so I'm sorry for the late reply. Once you've changed your suspension via lowering springs, coilovers, whatever it may be, you will need to get an alignment done on your vehicle. Not sure if the shop did that for you or not but I'd get your alignment checked.

Would it be easier to remove the axle bolt in order to get enough room to pull out the strut? Versus taking off the 3 bolts on the control arm.

@@ModernEngineer yep and the axle can get stuck you then need a special tool for that, a new ball joint is cheaper than a damaged axle or hub.

The roads being horrible in Seattle with tons of potholes and cracked pavement, I bent my 17 inch rims running 45 series tires quickly, and the ride quality was harsh and noisy. I bought a set of 16 inch VW rims running 55 series tires and the ride quality is much more comfortable and quiet, plus the tire profile almost completely eliminated rim scrape on curbs (kerbs)

So you don't have to take off the axle bolt? Other install videos show removing the axle bolt and the control arm nuts. I didn't want to bother with removing the axle bolt. This looks promising.

You don’t have to. If anything, I would remove the 6 bolts on the inner cv at the transmission.

You put the front springs in upside down. The 'flat' end goes against the bearing at the top. The color paint dots should be closer to the wheel.

How did you get around not having to remove the axle bolt? Is that because you removed the control arm? I'm trying to find a way to swap my springs without having to remove the axle bolt. I replaced it a few months ago when I went to VWR springs and it was a bitch getting that final torque, so now that im going a bit lower Im trying to avoid this step at all costs (if possible) Thanks for any info you can get back to me...

The first one was the right direction, but the next two were wrong :) Spray with PB Blaster, let it sit a while, break out the impact gun. Much better odds of not shearing the studs.
