How to Install Pistons and New Rings - Ford LR SDV6 / S5-EP21
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this episode we show how to install pistons and new rings into our Land Rover Discovery 4 Gen2 SDV6 engine. Christian also shows how to machine a piston ring install tool and we do a platigauge test on all big end bearings. We show how we document all our measurements and check torque to rotate of the short block. One small step for man but one giant leap for our failed engine repair job.
We are not liable for any harm you do to your car, your engine, your surroundings or yourself. Use the information given in this video at your own risk.
Thanks for watching,

How many home mechanics here that wished they had a workshop like Christian?

You can buy an old lathe like a Colchester Student for very sensible money. The ones from schools and colleges tend to be good buys as they have not done much work and there's little wear in the bed. Plenty of chuck crashes but they tend to survive that OK.

Engine rebuilds are so satisfying to watch.
For Vera, Rule of Thumb is an English expression. I used to put top rings in with a small undersize step at the top, especially made for worn bores. Pistons used to expanded to take up wear. with a special expander, and yes, I have a machine shop in my garage, and am a toolmaker.

Had a good lesson at the university of Land Rover and Christian still had the energy to split wood.
As an owner of classic Land Rovers i would love to see you guys rebuild an engine of the 60's and work on older Land Rovers as well.

Yeah, unfortunately, they are too expensive. And it is extremely difficult to create weekly content with an older car. We had that last year when we did a almost full restoration of my Discovery 3. Often a single video had 3 weeks worth of work in it, especially when it came to body work, grinding and rust removal. It was too much stress in addition to Christian's pretty stressful fulltime job. But hopefully in the future. 👍🙋♀️
I wonder if the Land Rover dealers have started using these videos to train their mechanics? Let's hope so.

Just to put the record straight: I'm no desktop mechanic. I'm a sofa mechanic, and I have pictures to prove it, if necessary. Head gasket #3, for so little protrusion? You must be kidding! You're going to have so little compression, it's probably not going to fire. Actually, I think it's going to measure vacuum at TDC! Btw: That grey-out of the starter pack was so successful, that I can actually recommend it. I have an identical for my TDV8/SDV8. It was only two days old when I had to jump-start a Munchen-maschine with it. She believed she could sit in the car for an hour with the key in the ACC position, listening to the radio in the rain. Well. She could...

I have a similar one for up to 6litre and one cold day it started 3 x 2litre diesel vans that had stood in our yard all through the Winter - one after the other and still had over half its power left
After watching all your videos I finally figured out how all that desktop mechanics are created! Even without any knowledge of engine engineering, LR or SDV6 I feel like I know everything ( but nothing about Toyota!) and be a real expert ! 😂 But I promise to stay silent, not giving advise here and grow my knowledge as a desktop mechanic by watching all the videos next to come! 😂😂 Keep them coming! 👍😉😁

Vera and Christian I follow you both avidly each Sunday 😊. As a 68 year old aeronautical engineer/ex-commercial pilot, I value your knowledge which you freely disseminate via your UTube channel. Your English language is far more advanced than my German language, however, again no disrespect, “chamfer” is pronounced “shamfer”, not “chamfer”, not a big issue, however I thought you might like to know the English language more. My first employer in 1974 was BAC, which became British Aircraft Corporation and I worked on the Concorde project, worked in flight test. Best wishes to you and Vera, from Australia, down under 😊. Great update. I so much want to rebuild my old engine. It lost compression in cylinder 1, crank is still good. Maybe a winter project? Top tip for the log splitting, sit them in an old tyre, or 2 as it stops them moving and jumping about 👍 now I am off to watch Dave and his air con issues lol

Even tough I will never rebuild my own engine I am fascinated by your videos. BTW I need to go back and find your wheel alignment video. Just finished 4,500km of outback driving on some damaged roads. Wheel alignment was out and even worse after I paid the dealer AUD200 to fix it. I don't think the new operator had any idea what they were doing.

Such an informative video, everyone should learn by this, maybe Dave is learning a trick or two from it 😉
Enjoyed the meticulous measuring, as always! As for Fabian, we have friends who lived in Africa for a couple of years in the seventies. First hand story: taxis didn’t always have working brakes (even famously indestructible Peugeots need maintenance). Planning ahead, engine braking and the handbrake did the job!

Vera and Christian, have you ever opined on the stewardship of Land Rover (Rover Group, BMW, Ford, Tata) and do you still consider them to be a unique brand or a subordinates of the owners? Who did the most for Land Rover through things like expansion, investment, technology integration, quality management improvements or diversification of engine, transmission, drivetrain, suspension or brake system products? Phil.😎😇

yayyyyy, at last a LR Time video. 🙂
So far not so much was wrong with that engine, but after all this it should be as near perfect as it can be. The fact that the pistons show scarcely any wear is a good sign that it was not neglected. However, that said it's still an expensive replacement.
Good update keep it up the good work 👍👍👍
Good morning Vera
The knowledge you have is unbelievable. Everything is done so accurate not many people work like that
No LS or Toyota engine swap this time ! Maybe one day LR time will do it ?
Don’t worry Disco owners your not alone, LR decided in their infinite wisdom to screw 2.2TDCI Puma owners over with their not so public oil pump recall Ford Service action 4S616 or LR Q421 it was a few years ago, but I know of two Puma’s that locked up at speed. There was also cracks on the front axle, where by the crucible / stub axle would detach itself again in motion. Another LR recall, had a new axle fitted, happy days.
Thanks again for another briliantly detailed rebuild!
Surprised that, with all your tools, you didn’t make a log splitter 😂🎉😂

Hello from ireland ❤
Christian and Vera. Have you considered fitting an electric oil pump to pre oil the engine at start up. These are fitted to competition engines and some tanks. I cant believe anyone would accept an engine rattling away without oil pressure for 3 or 4 seconds on each start up because the designers screwed up. You are doing a shit hot job!!

Another great episode. 👍 The madness of the Discovery used market continues. On my local ads this week. A 2015 D4 ( registered as a 5 seat commercial, so cheap road tax) 130,000 miles with full history £10,000. I presume that’s a Gen2 engine. Also a clean 2012 HSE with 140,000 miles £7250. 😬
Top class video, Dave would approve!! Please tell Fabian to drive Toyota when he goes to Africa, so he dont disturb your videos!!👍
for sure good work !! for fist 500km 5w30 would be nice to have engine bearings bedded in ( and eliminate eventual linnen ,dust crap ,filings, hairs etc , then oil change to final 5w40 and check difference on oil pressure , btw these bearings are called thinwall bearings ) from british inventor Vanderwell ( thickwall was babbit bearings) , and on used bearings you can know the wear by the colors of each layer of the different alloys used and each layer as a different color ( grey , bronze yellow and pink,...if you see pink the crankshaft is probably worn by the bearings ! and lack of lube
Once again Christian/Vera, the description and detail you give is both captivating and magnetic. As others have said, this engine will be better than when leaving JLR FACTORY

To be accurate, leaving the Ford/Stellantis engine plant in Essex. They arrive at JLR in a crate. Though JLR isn’t using that engine any longer.
Excellent as usual, old Londoners don't say wife they refer to “Trouble & Strife” instead.
i was inspired to change the oil & filter on my Disco 4, diesel 3.0 here in Ukraine. i used the bottom sump nut and left it for a while to drain. i wasnt able in an case to have the oil sucked out the top. the old filter i opened out and there wasnt anything shiny or magnetic there, nor in the old oil. refilled with Liqui Moli Molygen 5w 30. didnt have the b***s to use 5w 40 lol...
Always good videos

Thank you.

You two are amazing at what you do!
Definitely new rings and bore de glaze
Measure Once Cut Twice 😉😱😎
I like the way you do stuff...enjoying watching..!!
New rings definately. Pistons - clean, visually inspect and measure to determine possibility for service. Piston ring gap should always be checked. Pregapped should be OK, but packaging or machining mistakes can happen. I took Automotives in high school. My first job after leaving school was at a heavy equipment wrecker, dismantling heavy equipment and cleaning parts. One of the other guys rebuilt an International engine that started on gasoline and then when warmed up a lever was turned and it switched to diesel fuel. Just after flipping it to diesel there was a crashing noise and they shut it down. A ring on one cylinder butted up tight and pulled the liner apart and it got smashed on the crank and conn rod. He can to ask me if I had heard of measuring ring gap. Farm boy never heard of that and had gotten away with not measuring for 20 years.
@Vera_and_Christian
Ай бұрын
We checked. 👍👌not everything makes it into the video or even gets filmed unfortunately. 🙋♀️
Very Thorough
Another great Sunday morning video and apart from the engine rebuild work it is nice to see that Christian is maintaining his physique by continuing his Lumberjack training, Dave will be so jealous! :)
Piston rings rotate on the piston in use at about 1% of engine rpm mainly due to the cross hatch honing on the bore, this is very desirable as it helps to even out wear on the piston, rings and bore. Like this the orientation of the gaps changes all the time when the engine is running, the only time the orientation of the gaps is an issue is on initial assembly where it's desirable that the gaps are not in line otherwise it's slightly possible that a vertical scratch in the bore might occur on initial startup caused by a sharp edge on the gap of a new ring and this vertical scratch might lock in the position of the gaps during future running and prevent them from turning on the piston which in turn can cause uneven wear. These instructions are taken verbatim from Harry Ricardo's superb book on 4 stroke engine development and technology. I like your show Vera and Christian and I never miss an episode, OMG Vera always cracks me up with laughing at her reactions to events and is an excellent and essential foil to your joking Christian.
