How To Install Level 2 Charger At Home - DIY - 240v NEMA 14-50 vs Hard-wired

In this video I'll show you how to install a level 2 charger in your home for electric car charging to get fast at-home charging. Level 2 home charging allows you to charge your electric vehicle at up to 11.5 watts via either 40 or 48 amps (depending on how you wire and set things up). There's a lot to consider with the pros and cons of each charging setup option, so I overview a few things to consider and then why I ended up opting for a full 48 amp charging system instead of the NEMA 14-50 charging install.
With a NEMA 14-50 you can run either the mobile charger or a dedicated box plugged into the charger
With a full hard wired charger you get the maximum available at home charging speeds.

Good video. I probably would have used black, red, and white wires for that setup.

So, when you install the 14/50 short cable with the plug that plugs into your wall outlet, what do you do with the fourth wire? You mentioned that the 14/50 cable has four leads….jut curious…

Hi just watched ur video, my R1S is coming this month like white exterior and ocean white inside Thanks for ur hard work to make this video Secondly why u are getting only 21 miles from 48 amps I have EQS 450 but getting 32 miles from 40 amps charge point charger

Because the R1 models have a much larger battery. So think of it in percentages. Say you're hooked up to a charger delivering 6kw. 6kw is ~10% of a tesla model 3 battery (roughly). 6kw is 4% of a R1 battery (135kw). Both cars get roughly 325mi from a full charge. But charging the tesla for an hour will give you 10% (~30mi) and charging the R1 for an hour will give you 4% (~13mi).

What gauge wire are you using for the 60A? It looks like 6 gauge.

It is 6AWG. Although it's a 60A circuit, the charger only pulls 48 continuous. I used 6 on my tesla wall charger for years with 0 issues.

@@Kurnurs Breaker needs to be sized for the feeder cable size, not charger draw! It is there to protect the cable. Cable is sized to the charger draw. 60 amp breaker requires #4 conductor, not #6

@@Kurnurs I was just telling you what is code. Just because everybody's doing it that way doesn't make it right. If there's ever a short it could start a fire. I didn't mean to Flame anybody, just speaking from 35 years of electrical experience

As a licensed Master Electrician I find this video to be dangerous. This installation is NOT code compliant. His work practice could result in a hazard or even death. There's a reason it takes six plus years to get your Masters. Anyone can make it work BUT is it safe? He's worried about his kid playing with a cord? He should be worried about injuring himself or family or burning his house down.
