Although i don't have enough confidence to do this myself, i thought it was an excellent video and instructions on how a backyard mech can. VG VIDEO

i just drilled 2 holes in the bed right behind where he mounted his angle iron. It worked well for me pulling motorcycles up. I would use a couple of long bolts that hold motorcycle engines as pins.. and pull the bolts out when i finsihed. I then got idiotic and forgot the bed wasn't that strong and tried to straighten a bent trailer and started to bend the bed. i had intended to use a skid and back up and straighten the bed, but i ended up selling the bed for $1,000 because it had no rust. bought the truck from texas. unfortunately it cost me $1,000 to ship it up lol. Now my plan is to mount a harbor freight ATV hitch to a headache rack.. and use a hitch winch mount on my new truck. I'm also thinking a skid might make a good mounting point.

This should prevent the bed sides from collapsing inward. Simple enough I think I can do it with my youtube garage welding skill lol.

Those are pretty tiny bolts holding the brackets to the box. I would have gone 3/8” myself since there is room for the larger bolts.

What's the heaviest item you have pulled up on this setup? Trying to decide if I go 3/16" or 1/4" thick.

The go kart is the heaviest. If its larger leg length angle iron, the 3/16 is fine as long as it's not placed in torsion than it will twist quite a bit. The bed rails will likely always be the weakest link without additional bracing to the bed.

I have a 2010 Toyota Tacoma the best I could do is mount a winch like that to the bed floor up by the rear sliding window I could loosen up the bolts that actually hold the bed to the frame and put a piece of steel across The bed floor and use the bed mounting bolts to secure it???? My only worry is the cable would cut into the bed if I wasn’t careful that Tacoma‘s got a composite bed and it’s not real heavy duty,,, I would like to do something like this to load a 619 pound item a BF 34 safe up in Connecticut I found for sale the only way I could get it up into the truck is a winch of some type like this I figured I’d put a tow strap around it and tip the safe on its back on a set of wooden ramps with aluminum tips and hoist it in that way I’m not even sure it’ll work but that’s my idea????

Next time, grind the winch bracket and weld it. No need for bolts.......... save yourself a ton of headache. Very thorough.

Harbor freight has winches and 2" winch cradles that are meant to make winches easily removable for car truck suv hitches

How did the winch hold up over time, did the inside have any bends because of the weight

Still holding with no bends anywhere. As long as the cross bar is tightly fitting nothing should bend...just need to keep the load within reason.

Should be fine for up to around 300 lb as long as the load is on wheels and ramp isn't too steep. Most blowers and generators shouldn't be over 200 lb.
