How to Install A Wheel Stud Conversion Kit
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video, I picked up a wheel stud kit, and decided to install them on the Mini. I’ve found them so far to be a lot more convenient than the standard lug bolts. What I did was find out what thread pitch and size my Lug Bolts were, and found a wheel stud conversion kit that was of the same specifications.
So I picked up an M14x1.25 wheel stud kit, and show you how easy it is to install them. You will most likely see these kids of conversion for German cars, where they use lug bolts as opposed to wheel studs and lug nuts. By purchasing any of the items below, it helps my channel operate and brings more awesome content your ways, at NO ADDITIONAL COST TO YOU. Thank you all for your generous support!! 🖤

Yo, you did a really good job on the camerawork. I went the whole video staring at the hub assembly, the brake caliper, the studs, and at some point I was wondering if that assembly was on a stand or workbench somewhere. I was confused for a few seconds, because in other "wheel well videos" like suspension or brake stuff, you're used to seeing the entire wheel well. Here, the brake is sharp, while the suspension components and inner arch are so out of focus and seem so far away, that you barely notice them. Makes this video a joy to watch.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks Milan we now the diffrence between nuts an bolts :)
good luck on your test man!
Thanks man, so helpful

@@10feetup agreed eventually figured out heat is required. I had to use MAPP gas for 30-40 seconds on the stud before it would come out.

Great video one question, what is the difference between permatex red high strength and permanent? Can either be used for stud conversion?
Thank you for showing how to do this without using the 6mm hex bit. The manufacturer always says to use 90ft lbs with a hex bit but they always break or strip out. So your method of using 110 ftlbs of torque is a better install.
Wow another Milen Castrati video!

Is this needed for after market wheels on any german car? I'm having a hard time finding bolts for my motegi wheels that fit my car. I know they're not conical lugs. Im thinking of doing the conversion just to be able to use regular nuts with the wheels sense my factory bolts aren't long enough to go in the threads from behind the new wheels
Really good video. Very informative, described and explained really well. What length Stud did you use?
@milanmastracci

I believe the kit I got was the 90mm extended studs. I went with the largest studs available so I wouldn't ever have to run into spacers issues
Good stuff. I hate those lug bolts. Thank god my car uses normal studs + lug nuts.
Do you know who sells 14mm(1.5) VW stud/nuts? Has to be the ball seat nuts to fit the wheels. - thanks
Might do the switch for my mini as well...

I wanted to know where did you get the conversion kit?
That wide body kit better be good with that much of a wait (; just kidding haha
Great Video! I have the same BBS RK on my mini. I didn't see you use a hub ring unless your wheels have the correct hub ring for the mini? With that setup, was there vibration on the steering wheel above a certain speed?
@milanmastracci
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Josh, I did not install hub centric rings here at the time since the wheels were new to me, however yes, without the hub rings you will get a vibration. I would 100% recommend getting them for any aftermarket wheel setup 👍
I Need help Haha...The M12x1.5 also fit into a mini r56 S
Just a heads up, torquing like that can give you an inaccurate torque. Thats why they have the allen in the end. It should be torqued to 36ft/lbs with the allen. It wont be too far off though. Otherwise, great video.
Good spesar
How do you know the torque spec for the studs? Also if I want to remove them later, do I use medium length threadlocker?

Nope just heat them with a torch. the loctice will disintegrate.
can i use this set on my f80 m3?
You should of put it in reverse gear to tighten the studs and in first gear to take them off I hope it helps you down the road 🙂
where do i get a conversion kit for a 93 festiva?
Did you get the 75mm or 90mm studs?
Where did you get those jacks stands?
or you can put car in first gear and while tightening the stud it doesnt move. love the videos keep em coning !!

The opposite wheel would spin in that situation. The only way that would work, is if your car is an automatic, and you leave it in park.

Great video. Quick question. I’m guessing my Mini (2010 R56 JCW) is the same spec as yours and you have linked to both “M12x1.5” and “M14x1.25”. You mentioned that it comes as a set of 20 (4x5 lug bolt/nut) and wanted to make sure what R56 uses. I’m currently using 5mm spacers but I’m swapping to a new wheels that allows me to get rid of the spacers. Is M14x1.25 the appropriate one? Thank you. Appreciate your help.
@milanmastracci
3 жыл бұрын
That is correct, these MINIs run larger M14 x 1.25 bolts. You will need that size stud kit to work 👍
I would be more concerned about the heat rating on the threadlocker since your brakes will transmit a lot of heat through the studs, especially if you're going to track the car. Even the "permanent" red stuff breaks down with enough heat. The package says it's good up to 232 C, which isn't unheard of for a track car with aggressive pads.
Awesome dude! Tnks! Got me some enkies 17" rims. Minor scratches. Painted them bronze metallic .Almost complete and ready to install some cooper tires zeon rs3-G1. Have couples of questions? Are spacer safe? Which one do u recommend to give it the flush look? I got a 2008 s clubman.

I would think so. Are you using a torque wrench? Or just tightening it? On mounting wheels i think torque wrenches are not necessary whats so ever. I've always just tightened the lugs and that it. Never had an issue and my dad has too on his cars for over 40 years and hes never had an issue
@milanmastracci

The more threads the better. With just 3 full threads on your lug nuts, it will do PRETTY MUCH the same amount of bitting force as more than that. With that being said, I would still like to have more than 3 threads, especially if you are beating on the car, if the bolt gets heated and then cooled, and if you want to play it safe. Most OEM lug nuts run at least 10 threads on the lug nut.

Can I Somehow do this to change the Stud Size? I want to go from 14x1.50mm to 12x1.50mm
@milanmastracci
4 жыл бұрын
Not easily. It would be simpler to go from m12x1.5, but not the other way around since the hole you want is smaller.
how will you know which Stud will fit your car?
Don't you have to take the studs off to replace the rotors? How would you do so because of the red locktite? Would the blue come off easily while you are taking the wheels off?

The studs thread into the hub not the actual rotor. The rotors would just come off as east as if you had a factory 4 stud hub

'The problem is if it's a Manual transmission with an open diff and you have the opposite wheel on the ground the wheel that''s in the air will spin.
@4G12
7 жыл бұрын
When 2 of the 3 shafts attached to he differential gear system are practically locked in place, it become impossible to rotate the remaining wheel that's off the ground to any significant degree without breaking something. No need to take my word for it, try it yourself if you have the opportunity to do so. It's how I've been able to work on my open diff FWD car all this time alone.
@paulgonzalez7852

Does your FWD car have an automatic transmission or a manual?
8:00 this is not how physics works. If you are putting 80 ft-lbs of torque, something must be counter acting it (conversation of angular momentum). The stud MUST be experiencing the same torque at the hub - in the opposite direction, otherwise it would spin. Try holding the stud at the hub end (act like you're the hub) then bottom out the nut and turn it - in order to keep the stud in place - your hand must apply an equal and opposite torque. It doesn't matter if the bolt is compressing the wheel or not and "stretching" the threads. The initial torque you apply is just to seat the stud - then the 80 ft-lb is also tightening the stud to the hub. With the locktite, it means that when you remove the nut - the stud won't come off with it. The stud will also experience 80 ft-lbs of torque when you remove the nut.
what if i want to run other style lug nuts? is that possible?

Yes, the rotors can be removed normally with removing the brake caliper first.
Harbor Freight sells a set of 6 studs with 2 each pair with having 3 different diameter. You just select the pair that screws into the stud bolt holesThe HF studs are about 6” long put studs into two holes and install your lug bolts in the remaining holes. Remove the HF studs and put your remaining lug bolts into the remaining holes. NOW HOLDON the HF stud kit sells for $6.95.
Or you could tighten them with an allen wrench?

You still need to be able to get an appropriate torque wrench on there to get the achieved torque spec.
