Installing it isn’t the complex part. Average person who “studies up” with videos like this can do it. The issue is plumbing the loop. Average person can’t do that on their own if it wasn’t already pre-plumbed for it.

You forgot the supply shutoff valve for the water softener and the bypass tube with a shutoff valve so you can shut water off to the water softener if necessary and then bypass it so the house can have water while the water softener is shut off. Otherwise a leak on the water softener would require shutting water off to the entire house for however long it takes to get fixed or replaced.

You’d want a carbon filter for chlorine, iron filter for iron. If your silica is dissolved you may need an anion resin / ion exchange filter. To answer your sizing question, 50# of gravel & 4 cubic feet of your choice resin. If you don’t filter the chlorine or iron before softening I’d suggest an HE resin by purolite. For consistent water quality delivery you might opt for 2 units to run simultaneously with electronic interlocks.

Most Apartments/Rental Units are not allowed, due to floods insurance. NOTE: Water Softener is only to Softness Water. There is no need for them to be honest.
