Thanks for this video, it saved me SO much money! A lock shop employee was condescending to me and I came home frustrated. Couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong until I saw your detailed video for the deadbolt installation. Then I realized the lock shop man put the mechanism in upside down, which I also did. Watching your video detail corrected the problem, and I THANK YOU! May God richly bless you!

You are a beautiful man! i learned some things for the installation of my new Schlage front entry door like. i returned a Kwikset Juno lock that they said didn't have their system of leaving the screws in & then twisting the inner handle on & then tightening. My other Kwikset inner handle fell off & on the floor one morning going to work! i like the Schlage with the screws that go through & hold the inner door handle on...much better! Thank you Contractor John!

At 2:05 it appears to be installed incorrectly and upside down. You can see the word Top with an arrow pointing down instead of up. Then at 2:10 it is installed correctly and right side up. That took me about 10 minutes to figure out why mine was not the same. Other then that, great video, very helpful.

I had the exact same problem. I installed it upside down, just like in the 1st part of the video. It took me a while to figure it out, in part because I saw the close-up on this video and thought that I had it right.

@@gcn9 Absolutely! This is the worst. Not only is it upside down but the pin and the rod are completely going into the wrong holes! This video should be edited or removed.

Ed, I agree with you but local building codes do not allow what you described. Their fear is you will not be able to find the key to let yourself out in event of an emergency, and if you leave a key in the lock, you are back to the situation you described. The best solution would be an alarm system with a glass break monitor. Thanks for your comment.

At 2:03, is that deadbolt strike latch in upside down? I am stuck on this step and mine looks opposite of that one. Let me try and turn mine upside down?

John, this is helpful except that that in your very first image, the deadbolt is upside down. In the later image, the deadbolt is correctly inserted, right side up. - Ron

Once the door knob is in, are the screws suppose to be on the top and bottom of knob? I've only seen the screws on either the left and right of the knob.....please clarify. I don't know if I am doing something wrong.

+Ariel Dimaya The screws need to be on either side, not top and bottom. Side to side is the only way the handle fits through the strike latch. Contractor John Follow Contractor John and receive a FREE gift ContractorJohn.com

No mention of the little half moon part of the latch (that moves in and out independent of the big latch) and is supposed (according to Schlage) is NOT supposed to go into the hole with the large part of the deadlatch.

I prefer using Kwiksets because they are easier to install than Schlage. I came across this video because we have a lock set that is unfortunately Schlage. It's a pain to use these things and I just ended up throwing away the Schlage set we have.

I have 4 doors. Two open with door knob on right side of door and two with door knob on left. I think I can make the middle piece of the lock point in either direction (to the right or to the left) and that way the key will always be in same direction when used to open the doors.

Great video, but it's not a good idea to install a single cylinder deadbolt on a door with a window and sidelights. One small punch, the glass is broken, and the bad guy will reach in and unlock the door. A double cylinder deadbolt is the way to go. Just be sure you don't leave the key in the lock.

Sometimes one of the screws backs out, or loosens a little and stops the thumb latch from moving. Or if you just installed it try loosening the screw a tiny bit. Hope that helps Contractor John

consulted this video for help, and ended up wasting time and getting frustrated. This should be corrected or deleted. The deadbolt is inserted upside down and incorrectly assembled in the first part of the video. He then corrects this without mentioning it or showing the correction(???) and demonstrates the deadbolt turning freely. I hope you have read the comments before you try to follow the video.
