    Zach I would install the switch on the left side away from the ladder since one may hit the switch while boarding the boat. One accident we don't need! LOL. Momentary type switch is a must. And you may even add a 20-30amp inline fuse for better protection. This also useful if you want to disable the switch by removing the fuse. Other than that great job brother!!

    Great idea. I'm using a momentary switch and using a 12ga 3 conductor extension cord. Cut the cord and have the female end attached to the pump. The male end will have a 4-6ft lead and plug into the female end which is now wired to the trim pump. You can use it for emergencies or hang the lead over the side for trailered maintenance. I love this idea!

    Hey Z, nice vid I would have used a spdt momentery type switch "release the button and it stops" like you have on the dash or in your throtle. if you are travelling on the road and something hits the button it has live power and nothing to stop it from dropping and then frying the switch, motor or worse case starting a fire.at very least I would install a fuseable link between the +battery and switch. Just my 2cents

    I'm glad you bring that up! I forgot to mention in the video, but I agree, I momentary switch would be better for this application! Only reason I didn't get one was because the shipping was going to take up to 2 weeks and I didn't want to wait that long 😝

    Hi, Gio here from Western Long Island sound. Looks like a great job however why does the switch need to be so large. I have a 22 ft Sea Ray with a rear switch already built in but it is about half the size of yours and works just fine. Wondering why you selected a larger switch. Also it appears you need to press it again a second time to stop it going up or down. Could be hazardous.

    That switch should be MOMENTARY only.. not an 'on off'. Bad things can happen if that switch gets activated while under way and your pump is stuck on. Or like others have mentioned - only a matter of time before someone tosses something on your swim deck and hits that switch, doesn't notice and BYE BYE pump! I'm going to do a similar mod like this, except I might use a wireless relay. They're dirt cheap and easy to connect. Best part is - NO HOLES to drill or switches to be exposed. The only down-side is I'll have another remote FOB to lose.. lol. So I dunno.. Just a thought. Find remote relays at Electronic surplus web stores. I use them on garage door openers and a number of other things.

    I think I'm going to do this as well especially for maintenance, but also I will add an "Enable switch" to my dash or maybe in the dog house, out of the way, therefore if someone is out on the dock of the boat and they accedently hit that switch I can have it disabled, so it doesn't mess with my trim while on the water.. basically I would take the power lead and add an inline switch on it, just a 2 way toggle to where it can close the power lead and complete the circuit when i want the remote trim to be active.

    I can see why this would be useful. Did you confirm the IP rating for this switch? Referring to it as “marine” does not mean it is watertight especially if it is designed to be installed on a console. I have a swim platform on my boat and that help the wash to come onto the step on rapid decelerations. Any switch in that position will be awashed and if the IP rating is not good enough, you will have electrical issues.

    I would like to set this up to where the trim limiter works. How would I do that?

  • @wallbagner
    @wallbagner3 жыл бұрын

    Hi! zack, BTW nice video, i am planning to add a remote switch to the rear of my boat for the trim! , but after seeing what you are using for a switch i think the ideal type of switch would be of the intermittent On- OFF- ON type that returns to center position same model type same dimensions, now as for the wiring, you don't need heavy gauge wires because you are activating solenoid switches (relays) these solenoid switches are used to handle the high current demand from the hydraulic pump motor, but the current needed to activate the solenoid switches is in fact very low so 16 or even 18 gauge wires would do just fine, i know this because i am an electronics technician by trade! , so 12 or 14 gauge wire is a bit overkill in my opinion! , if you look at the starter solenoid for the motor you will find next to battery terminal the small wire to activate the starter solenoid that wire goes all the way to the ignition key in the front. Nice Job On the restoration of your boat, that was a lot of work! CONGRAT'S.

  • @ZachsGarage1

    @ZachsGarage1

    3 жыл бұрын

    I agree a more ideal switch would be a momentary switch that returns to center position on its own. For wire gauge, I am actually by-passing the solenoids, so the full power of the trim motor is actually running through my wire. I did this so incase the solenoid were to fail the trim switch at the back would still work. Thanks for the kind words! :)

  • @wallbagner

    @wallbagner

    3 жыл бұрын

    I understand the reason for wiring the rear switch the way you did, But, i would rather use the solenoids to activate the trim pump motor simply because these solenoid relays are Designed! to handle high current demand , and the fact that the failure rate is very low! , personally i wouldn't bypass the solenoids but i'd rather piggyback the wiring, that switch will fail sooner because of the high current passing thru the contacts.

    Momentary switch in a better protected location would save what will inevitable cost you a new pump or worse. Someone is going to set something on that swim deck in storage and it will lean on the switch and cause all kinds of trouble.

    EXACTLY. The wrong switch is the first thing I noticed too. Bad idea using an 'on-off' switch. It should be MOMENTARY only. I'm considering making this mod too as I hate crawling on/out of the boat to raise or lower the drive, especially during maintenance. And every single one of us has forgot to raise the drive while pulling out of the water, Having a remote switch in the back should be standard issue on I/O boats.

    My Cobalt boat has probably 18 gauge wire from the throttle trim and from the existing transom trim switch. Why are you needing to use 12 gauge wire? Is that because you are you are direct wiring to the pump and not the trim pump relays?
