How to Install a Remote Trim Switch on your boat!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome back everyone! In this episode I tackle installing a remote trim switch as a feature and a backup to the trim switch at the helm. This is an awesome modification and I can't recommend it enough! This is done on a Mercruiser alpha 1 gen 2, but should be a similar process for OMC and Volvo drives.

Great idea! One important thing to add is an inline fuse in the red wire. I used a 20A one in my case. It serves two purposes: does not let your switch to burn as well as protects other parts as well (say if your pump is not protected by a fuse).

Thank you, this is on my list for this year…mainly to trim the motor down to drain it after putting on the trailer and pulling out of the water

good information thanks. I started using heat shrink that is used in water wells on my boat as it has a sealing adhesive in the heat shrink.

Please forgive me for my misunderstanding but I thought that you bypassed the solenoids and went directly to the motors. Did I miss something? Great video by the way.

How do you wire it up the other way so that the limiter works

I set one up for my Force 120 with 10 ga wires and it burned the switch immediately. How many amps is your switch rated for? Can I run the switch on the negative (control) side of the solenoids instead?

Another question. The wires coming from my throttle trim switch and transom switch are barely 16 to 18 gauge wire. I know you were using 12 to 10 gauge. Does the original smaller gauge wire on my boat because they are going through trim pump relays?

Is the diagram backwards? It shows green wire UP, blue wire DOWN. Thanks!

nope, if you use a rocker switch, this is how they are connected internally

So maybe the trim motor is grounded through the engine ground. Only thing that makes sense. I mean I get that I need to hook the red wire to a power source. I just am far too curious to let this sleep until I know exactly where it is grounded.

I have a transom trim switch on my Cobalt 246, but I have to have the battery switch on to use it or the throttle trim switch. I would like to have a transom trim switch that has power all the time so if forget to trim the motor down and I already put the cover on I don't have to crawl under the cover to turn the battery switch on. Any suggestions?

You'll need to see where your trim switch is getting power from and run it straight to the battery instead of wherever it's currently pulling power from (some ignition switch controlled source)

@@MadPropsMakes thank you for the fast reply. I am not sure I would want a ignition switch controlled source then I would have to have the switch on. I agree I need a direct power source from the new switch to the pump. If I did that then I would need to splice into the pump wires after the relays?

There is a ground wire from the pump mount to either the engine or right to the battery
