How to install an ACDelco water pump on a 1976 C3 Corvette Stingray. Part 2 of 3.
Replacing the water pump on a C3 Corvette is not difficult, as long as you have a good set of tools and can take your time to see the process from start to finish.
In Part 2 I cover the following:
▶ Refinishing the new ACDelco pump to prevent rust
▶ Using Red Thread Locker to keep the fan studs securely in place
▶ Removing old gaskets and installing new Fel-Pro gaskets
▶ Installing the new pump
▶ Using thread sealant to avoid leaks
▶ Attaching the belts to the A/C compressor and alternator

I broke this project into three parts to keep the videos from getting too long.
This is a complete series covering each step, from removing the old water pump to installing a new pump, refilling the cooling system, and starting up the car to ensure there were no leaks or issues.
If you follow my blog (www.76vette.com), then you are aware that my '76 Vette was having overheating issues, and I decided to replace the aftermarket water pump, which was starting to fail, with an ACDelco unit, which actually fits much better.
I also addressed the installation of new water pump fan studs, since the old pump studs barely allowed for three threads to secure the fan, which was cutting too close for my taste.
I was lucky that the upper and lower radiator hoses were in new condition (I installed new hoses about five years ago), and I was able to reuse them. Replacing the lower radiator hose is not easy, and I was glad to be able to avoid it.

I use DupliColor cast grey engine paint. Looks like bare metal, like your pump and master cylinder and since it’s not clear it won’t discolor. Corvette looks good👍

I’m buying a water pump, and though there’s plenty of Edelbrock parts on it, I would be insane to spend $300.00 on the edelbrock name, I don’t care how much more flow it gives me. I’m trying to find one that kinda matches the finish. I the Auto Zone’s Duralast Heavy Duty Aluminum might match.

I just installed mine and it seems to be leaking. I have to take it off and redo it. Are there three bolts on the alternator side? I only remember pulling two out.

Two bolts per side for the water pump. I use FelPro gaskets amzn.to/3uqhkTs and thread sealant on all four pump bolts as they’re not blind holes and they can wick coolant. amzn.to/3VzRqbV I also posted an article to 76vette.com with lots of photos which may be helpful. www.76vette.com/2021/01/c3-corvette-install-water-pump.html Good luck. Any chance you have a part number for that brass plug you used on the intake manifold that typically routes to the heater core?

The thread of both the water pump and intake manifold for the heater hoses is half-inch. I bought 1/2-inch hex NPT brass plugs at ACE Hardware and installed them with Teflon tape. @@76vette Just out of curiosity. With the difference in metals, did/do you have any concerns regarding using a brass plug into the aluminum intake or for the radiator drain?

I'm going to replace my 1979 Vette water pump this weekend. Making some bad bearing noise. Did you use grade 8 water pump bolts, and did you have any trouble getting the old bolts out? I know they can have rust issues in that area. Thanks

Hello William. I am pretty sure I used grade 8 bolts, but grade 5 will work just fine. I did not have any issues removing the old bolts since the pump was replaced when I had the engine rebuilt, and that made things a lot easier. @@76vette Well I should get the new water pump for the 79 tomorrow. So I took the old one off today. Gave it a good spin when it was out. The thing sounded like a bag of rocks. Can't wait to hear a smooth purrrr under the hood! Nice to see someone as meticulous about their Vette as I. Thanks. PS That bottom radiator hose is a monster!

@@76vette I think I ordered the exact same pump. AC Delco #252-585. Painting mine black because my motor is black. I like the black and chrome look. Hows it going with your 76, still have it?
