A child learning to talk can take some time for typically developing children, but for autism, or late talkers it can take even longer. Today I’m covering 5 tactics to encourage talking in toddlers with and without autism. These strategies revolve around pop-out words, assessing language abilities, using easy learning materials, and thinking about you as a parent or professional may need to change how you speak to the child. Late talking children, for example, shouldn’t be spoken to with carrier phrases, and I talk a bit more about that in today’s video to help improve language development.
Increasing talking in children can seem impossible and discouraging when you haven’t seen your child or client talk for months, or perhaps they’ve stopped using some of the words they used before. Delayed speech is frightening to parents. But I can guarantee you that by implementing these strategies to get kids talking, you should see some progress. When a child is not talking, it’s typically because how they’re learning isn’t suitable for them, so sometimes it just takes a different approach, and I’m hoping my approach can help.

My son just turned 20 months old, and only says a few words. I’m a first time mom and I work from home so I try my best to dedicate time only to teaching him but I can do better tbh. His doctor has told me that he doesn’t seem to have any signs that he may be autistic yet. But I want to help him be verbal. I myself had a delay in speaking as a toddler and had to go to a speech therapist. I just want to help my baby boy flourish as best as I can. He acknowledges when I speak to him he understands when I talk to him, and he responds back to me when I talk to him but it’s mostly baby talk.

Thank you so much for this video. I came across this at a time when I am really struggling. My son was seen by a health visitor yesterday (UK), and will be referred to a speech therapist as he’s not really talking at the age of 2. We will need to wait for this so anything I can do in the meantime would be wonderfully to keep us going. Thank you so much ❤️

My son is half yes half no but we saw the pediatrician today for his 18 month wellness check and she also agreed we should have him evaluated so we’re waiting on that. He isn’t speaking at all, he shakes his head around and around and that was our first sign, he doesn’t answer to his name ever so that’s the second but he has great eye contact and smiles with us and he also loves to eat, he is not a picky eater whatsoever so that’s what I mean by half and half on that milestone list... I just want to be able to help him in any way I can, thank you so much for making these videos to educate us parents who have no clue where to start 💓

First of all, your videos are really helpful. Thank you for helping all the parents who are anxious or working with diagnosed kids. My son is 21months old. He has about 18 words and only 8 of them are clear, a stranger can understand them. The other 10 we can understand them but not others for sure. He says nana for banana and papel for apple stuff. He also spells almost 15 of the 26 alphabets and says numbers 1-10 with no clear words, an for one and so on. He points and does not have a toy preference or anything. He looks when we call his name but his attention is very very short. He will just turn and go about on himself.he understands directions, like sit, bring ur shoe, go say bye to dada when he goes to bed. I am already working with a speech therapist once every other week. What else do you recommend? I want him to catch up as early as possible. Thank you!

My grandson turned 2 in February. He talks a lot, but in his baby language. He can feed himself, drink out of a sippy cup, he bath himself, he is a busy bee, and love reading books, while on the potty, I need to read for him, and it must be out of a book of his choice. He will tell you a story in his baby language, with humor, but we do not understand a word he is saying. He can say mamma, pappa, ouma and oupa, that is all! As a grandma, I am a bit worried about it

I’m a first time mom with a 16 month old, who doesn’t want to use any zippy cups ( every now and then he’ll use them but sometimes he cries for his bottle), I feel bad taking it away because he’s water intake decreases, he says words but I notice he stop using some words he used to say before! Hoping I can continue to learn how to help my baby boy in this journey! I am also teaching him Spanish but feeling discouraged about it since I feel as if I’m co fusing him, hoping I can learn more about it!

My 3.5 years old son can tell me almost all flashcards I present to him and he understands everything I ask him to do like before his regression. However, the difficult task is to express himself on his own. He only ask me what he want like eat blueberries or give hands ( if he wants to show me what he needs) and want iPad. Otherwise, his scripts are gibberish but some real words come out here and there for there example he has been saying oh my God lol , or don't do this or car wash when he is pretending to wash his ( first time to match his words with what was actually happening) or wash dishes when he saw me doing it. So my take from your strategy is for me to use just one word when he show me what he wants ( he knows how to communicate with his hands a lot). He was diagnosed in September 2020 ( regressed at 3) Thank you

Mary, I am from UK but live in Malaysia, thank you so much for your advice, just want to ask, I was taught (As a teacher) to always get your students to look at your mouth movements when learning to promounce words properly, do you agree? And if so, this age of wearing masks does not help at all, I, as a teacher of all school ages, frequently lower my mask so the kids can see how my mouth moves when pronouncing the words. I have a friend's 3 yr old son starting on Monday, he has been diagnosed as autistic, but he can understand what you say, but he can only make sounds, not words. I am going to try to follow what you have been teaching in your videos, so hopefully can help him, his behaviour is so far good, and loves pop up books, thank you so much for the help so far x

Thanks for these videos. I am an American living in Italy, we didn’t notice anything at first but as time went on we noticed that our 3 yr old was not really hitting those development milestones. He was just fascinated by numbers- counting by 2s or 11s. Everything is described by numbers- he uses the number of calories listed on the packaging to ask for certain foods. The cars are described by license plate numbers, the house addresses, the weight limit on the ladder etc. It’s always a guessing game trying to figure out what these random numbers are. It’s been so difficult finding English speaking help here. That’s why I started to look for online help. Now I fear that my youngest might also be on the spectrum. 😖

Yesterday my son's pediatrician stated told his mother that he may be borderline autistic because he isn't using any words. He's almost 23 months. He babbles and occasionally I may hear a "dada" but I'm not sure if he's directing it at me. So she recommended that he get tested. I think your shoebox idea might help. I also wondered if he should be back on daycare, as perhaps being around other kids might help. I do really like your shoebox idea though.

Hi new to your channel. My son is 2.5 and says about 10 words. He understands a lot but has not advanced his vocabulary. He did have eating issues as baby and multiple swallow studies as an infant but he eats well now. He drinks out of sippy cup still but uses utensils (not well but he uses them) In between the words he uses correctly, he jabbers a lot. He was having tons of tantrums daily almost, but those have subsided dramatically and I'm hoping that I stumbled on to this shoebox program at just the right time. He gets weekly speech sessions but I think this will also help out greatly.

Hye dr! My son is 3 years and half now. He can understand me, but it is difficult for him to reply or response to me. He is good for taking instruction such as ‘go shower please’, ‘put your clothes on’ and he will do as i say. I know that he wanted to talk but instead of saying yes, he will only nod to me as a response. It is like his tongue is so stiff that he just mumbles the word instead of saying it. Once in a blue moon, he will say things like, ‘mom i dont know’ ‘i dont want that’ clearly, and he will only say things like that if there’s no one around. I have a 3.5 year old grandson. He has a lot of the eating problems that you mentioned, but he cannot say a word, or even close to a word. He makes noises, but there is no distinct letter sound, its a whole lot of ahhhhhh type of sound (if that makes sense). There are lately a few small words that he seems to understand, which are bye bye, bath, and nap. He has no concept on how to play, nor does he even attempt to play with toys, including any activity involving water, which seems to be his most favorite activity (in which he really doesn't do much in the water. I got him a water table hoping that I could begin to teach him, and I am getting nothing. We don't know what he understands, how to get him to communicate, or how to even start teaching him. Even if you dont believe he is autistic, you should have him evaluated. I think the program is called early intervention. Its completely free and they come to your house. They evaluate for many things, not just autism. If he is just speech delayed they have a speech therapist that comes to you and works with your child to get him to talk! Like I said its completely free. My daughter was speech delayed and was talking after maybe a month or less of speech therapy! But he could be high functioning autistic. They evalutate for many things so you will know for sure either way and then help you after the diagnosis!

I have a 4 year old currently awaiting an evaluation that was held up by the pandemic since his third birthday. His receptive language is there. He understands everything said to him, and verbal direction. However he doesn’t have conversations with anyone really. He speaks simple sentences. He does pretend play. He has always pointed, we do make the request that he verbally says what he needs from us. Which usually he does. He has been alphabetizing things since he was 2, he has also known how to count to 100 since then. Now at 4 he can also read, if he doesn’t know the word it sounds it out. He knows shapes I’ve never even hear of (thanks KZread). I was just wondering if your book would give me some tips/strategy to increase his expressive language as he’s nearing kindergarten. And we are trying to avoid someone just slapping a level on him by mechanically going down a checklist of autistic traits. Thanks! Look forward to a comment back.

My 3 year old can say: Ball, Bye-bye, Mom, Dadda, Choo-choo and Boh (he's referring to his favorite one season show of Titipo on Netflix, drives me a bit bonkers to be honest) When I try and teach him new words he only points at the items. No attempts at speaking. He understands body parts. Points at them all with no problem. When we tell him we're going out he gets his jacket and tries to put on his shoes then tries to unlock the door. Comprehension isn't the problem I can't get him to attempt to speak. He points and grunts. I never socialized until I was 7 years old by my own verbal deficiencies. I rarely said anything to my mother. The doctors said I had ADHD to explain my poor schoolwork then a few years later with Asperger Syndrome to try and explain my awkwardness around people. The books that dictate the spectrum were updated a decade later and pushed me off that diagnosis I previously had. Which I find weird but I accept it. Wondering if my back history might be a piece to why my child is having a hard time learning the spoken word.

His sentences are pretty short. He won't say i played with lego today and it was fun, can we do it again. I need to get it out of him. I ask him what did you do today and he will say played with cars today and then i ask who was it with ? And he will say Lucy. He doesnt share anything or he doesnt really ask any questions. He usually narrates what he does and in third person. Levi jumping , levi is running, lets run, levi is eating toast. Once in a while he will use I instead of his name because we have been correcting him. I have noticed kids in his class will say, mommy, I read a book about dinosaurs today and he doesn't really share unless I ask and get it out of him. His pronounciation is very good. He is very good at imitating. How do I expand his sentences and make him have back and forth conversations?

He has always been delayed in all categores, crawled at 18 months and walked at 22 months.. he is now 31 months, knows his alhpabets, his numbers, quite a few songs, colors, shapes and his own way asks for what he wants like water, raspberries, blueberries etc knows to call mom and dad and says ball and beep beep for a car and knows the word bus, he babbles a lot. he loves to eat e erything we give him, knows how to hold a spoon and tries to eat but is missing the part of being able to scoop food on his spoon. Cannot drink from a open cup yet.He is very mellow and very happy smiley child. he is very close to us and has pretty good eye contact when we call him or talk to him and play with him. He doesnt point, doesnt pretend play and has delay in his language. He sleeps super well at night and his naps. Very rarely throws a tantrum and some of his play is very repetitive like lining ip blocks, moving blocks from 1 spot to another 1 by 1. Loves to grab a hand full of rocks and slowly drop him from his hands numerous times. Im so confused there are major signs of autism and major signs of delay

He has always improved in his development and is enrolled in early intervention. As much as he has some critical red flags that can indicate autism he also is missing a lot of the other red flags that can also indicate autism. Could this be a borderline autism? is that a thing?

  • @marybarbera

Yes, it is a thing. It could be worth a full evaluation as the evaluators are quite skilled at seeing if a child has enough "behaviors" that add up to autism.

Did you end up getting your son evaluated? I know it’s been a long time since you wrote this but my daughter is pretty much exactly like that and I’m worried sick of what it is, I have already called for an assessment just waiting but would love to know if you found out if it was just pure delay or a mix of both ?

Im really worried about my 18 month old son. He says " mama, dada, baba, ya" but its all babble, its not with intent if that makes sense. He also does not point at anything or meeting most of his milestones. He knows his name and I think he knows what " no " means. He is a very hyper toddler, he cannot sit still lol so a lot of the time I think MAYBE he is just to distracted. He does make eye contact with us when he is actually engaged and if he is not distracted. Im getting him into seeing a speech therapist. I have been loving your videos. I am a first time mom and am lost as to what to do to help my son.

My son is autistic and never said a word, only grunted. One day, we stood at the window watching birds land on the evergreen tree. I kept repeating "bird" and "birdie." Then I world add the color of the bird. It finally clicked and he said, "Bird." Within 2 weeks, he was speaking in full sentences, never searching for a word or saying any improperly. Spending time teaching is the key for so many, I suspect.

I'm concerned about my 2 year olds speech. He understands us most of the time. If I have to go to the rest room I'll say let go potty and he'll stand by the door and wait. The other day I took him out of the bath and got him dressed. He ran into the hall and I said "wait for momma" and he walked back to the door playing with his hands and waited for me to finish picking up his toys and then when I said "okay lets go" he took off to see his grandma. But he says simple words like "mama" "dada" and then he calls grandma "uma" and he'll say "eat". He will even say "baba" and "apa" for banana and apple. But I hear frequently from his grandmother that he should be speaking and it causes me such stress and anxiety. But he also seems to speak in his own language. He'll run up to me and a "aah" while holding up his arms. I'll say up and pick him up. And he will throughout the day say things that sound like words like he'll shout "bow(like the gesture)" "bah" and if he hears a song that quacks he'll go "bababa"(depending on how many quacks. 1 quack is 1 ba). But my husband's grandmother(who is grandma for our son) insists he should be talking in sentences and that it's all my fault he isn't.

My son is 2 years old and 6 months rarely utters Mama and Papa and says namnam if he sees food like fruits or vegetables on tv. He hand flaps whenever he is excited or something in tv that he really likes. Initial assessment he has delay speech. Due to Covid-19 his therapy session was cancelled. My concern is he has flapping. Does this mean he maybe in autism spectrum?

I just signed up for your toddler guide, im watching all the way from Jamaica, my daughter was a 26 weeker, she has met most of her milestones in terms of walking etc, however at the age of 2 currently I'm a little concerned with where her speech level is at she was born in Nov 2017 her due date was however Feb 2018, she is a extremely brilliant girl she knows her colors, numbers from 1-20, she call words, understands certain commands, loves reading, addicted to her tablet (my fault)😒, but she just won't put 2worded sentences together or acknowledge us by saying mommy or dadda, she do however comes and take us by the hand and lead us to whatever it is she need us for, should I be concerned, I thought it was autism when she was younger but im beginning to think it may be a speech delay any advice?? Thanks in advance
