How to improve your Hockey Stop (or

Спорт

This is the final Lazer Coaching video with @lukasgibbogib. If you missed the previous episodes with him doing some enviable slides and combos check them out here;
• How to do Star slide &...
• How to do Soul slide, ...
In this video I Lazer in on Lukas's Hockey Stop which just needed a few tweaks to make it look more stable and slide better and slightly further. Imagine how that's going to develop in the next 50-100 times he does it.
I also share my pre-requisite skills list for learning the Hockey stop or Parallel slide from scratch. It's at the top of the list in terms of difficulty for the majority of skaters....and much sought after.
Let me know in the comments whether you've tried to learn the hockey stop and how that's going. What are your experiences with it?
For most intermeidate skaters the Parallel slide is (in my opinion) still a way off. A far more realistic and useful goal should be learning and mastering the Powerslide stop (from a forwards entry). Lukas confirmed near the end of this video how it's also his go-to stop when street skating or in an emergency. Check out my 4 Part Video Training here on the Powerslide.

    Amazing video, I love it. I can relate, I am one of those guys that wanted the parallel slide but was not ready for it. Currently following the Skatefresh progression and it's really working, my powerstop improved greatly! Thanks Asha.

    We will soon be seeing a lot more of your Powerstop (and progressions). I'm already scripting the Powerstop Online Video Training. This new class will be available by April (along with some other new offerings).

    I have been trying for a long time to Parallel slide but im still failing in it, sometimes im scared to fall again and get hurt like before. But the slide is kinda there! They only problem i have is that, while sliding, i ending like "rotating" instead of contine in a straing line. Thank you so much for these tips! Time to put them in practice 😊😊

    Yes I know exactly what you're talking about. It's an unfortunate consequence of the "skate along a straight line and then turn really sharply..." The rotation to make the turn continues after you want it to stop. This is difficult to control and I have a method for doing so that really works, but it's pretty complicated an to do with learning it a different way. Way rotating into the turn and then counter rotating out of it (as you start to parallel slide) is the way I teach it. I am working on putting this into a detailed Powerstop training which will then inform the subsequent Hockey stop training. It's not easy to summarise into something short. But Im working on it.

    Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. You have to "cut" the curve momentum using your arms but, as Asha said, it's really difficult to explain this in a few words, and there is also a lot to do with feeling. You need to feel weightless indeed... and how do I explain that?

    Hi, for another video do you think you'd be able to look at variations of the parallel turn? Ive seen videos stating if turning left left foot forwards and if turning right right foot forwards but then in the same video they do the parallel turn with the same foot forward regardless of direction which looks quicker for avoiding obstacles such as crowds at the local rink, im just not sure on the mechanics of it and when i try it feels impossible to turn

    Yes I can. That's a great new video topic. I'll put in on my list. You are correct. Classic parallel turns are, the foot that's in front is the way you're turning, right forwards to turn right. But the anti-parallel turns (lesser known) is right foot forwards turn left. This is more challenging as the back skate with more weight is needed on an outside edge and if the skater doesn't;t have outside edge fluency and comfort then this anti-parallel wont turn easily. The skates can also easily cross and hit each other (disadvantage). I teach anti-parallels to middle intermediates who already have some outside edge control. Focus on the left and right parallel turns and make them various sizes and maintain a scissor throughout.

    Seconding this as a topic! Most of my skating skills have unconsciously developed while playing casual street hockey. It was only recently when I started working on improving my skills for urban skating I noticed that I parallel turn one way, but Anti-parallel turn the other! Basically I generally skate with my right foot forward in scissor. Working on hip mobility seems to be helpful, but it always feels odd moving away from the ingrained habits!

    There's very few skaters in the world who I know can do a hockey stop on both sides (not even Bill Stoppard does and he's the King of the Powerstop). I think for stopping methods the important thing is to have a functional stop that works in multiple terrains and circumstances. Other skills such as crossovers, turns, transitions and striding I think are much more important to be done on both sides.
