I used two things to get a monstrously fast jab in my amateur boxing days. 1: non-lockout jabs with a light resistance band to failure 2x per week. Built up to a 50lb band for 100 reps. 2: tape a piece of newspaper to a doorframe only on the top. Let the bottom sway freely. Try to snap jab a hole in the paper. Repeat everyday until you get it. Slow jabs make the paper wrap around your hand.

Three big foundations for a powerful & fast strike. My Dad has taught martial arts since the 60s and still does to this very day. I have 14 years experience but my flying career got in the way. 1. Relax. It seems counter intuitive to human nature in stressful situations however if you relax your jab for around 90% of the movement then clench up at the last moment before you land a strike not only will your punch be traveling much faster but the impact will be more localized in one section. 2. Knowing how to twist your hips in unison with the punch is the foundation of where that punch is getting its power from. 3. Whatever you are aiming for, imagine hitting something 1 foot behind whatever your aim is, that is where you want your fist to mate up with.

    10 ай бұрын

@@vincentyoung5057 that is not a good idea, loosening your punch and tightening before impact telegraphs the intention of your hit, thus giving them advantage to evade or block. Let me explain, by loosening your punch before impact you essentially reduce the tension and force applied to the target, basically kills (or rather weakens) the power and effectiveness of your strike. And for the worse, if you forget to tighten your hands you might injure yourself. Also the idea of loosening and tightening in impact when throwing your punched is very disliked in martial arts. Edit: Of course relaxing the arm is essential for speed, and that's true. But loosening the hand and tighten when impact is not. Keep this in mind.

@@NotVergilWell for the most part I agree. But Im actually talking about 'not' telegraphing the punch. Y'know how most people tense up right before throwing? That. That lil flex is usually the tell tale sign something is coming.(shoulders etc.) Look at all feints. But staying loose before and during the throw makes it harder to detect. It opens up the ability to strike from any position without any tells. I guess the best recorded example I've seen of this would be that video of MJW asking Kimbo Slice to 'not' let him punch his hand. Check that out if you haven't seen it. But the point of it all is speed. Hmm... Better yet I'd say the illusion of speed. It's got to do with taking advantage of that gap of time where humans can't react. Can't remember the exact time stamp but I feel like you know what I'm talking about. But yea man. Tense everything at the end of the punch. Idk if you dabble in fighting games or not or know about frames but if you do it's Neutral - loose Start up - loose Active - tighten Recovery - loose

You're like I was 13 years ago and I'm building back up now. Word of advice, increase your weight slowly. I call it "your most comfortable max". If you feel no extra strain after 1.5 minutes of weighted shadow boxing you should up it by atleast 2.5lbs each. Do full rotations, pushups from every angle, and strike from every angle with those weights as well. You have hundreds of muscles you punch with that work together. Strengthen them all and you can punch through a car door. Also never forget to stretch your lower back. Also also, avoid freight elevators. I was taken out of the game 8 years ago by a freight elevator gate slamming into the top of my skull and messing up my spine.

Erm... Shoulder exercises have less effect on hand speed because it's mainly driven by chest and tricep activation. They might help you keep your hands up though.

For me, its knowing that majority of your hand speed for real punches (not like those rolling uppercuts you see boxers doing) comes from hip rotation. The independent movement of your arms is just bonus speed/power

I can't remember the name of this technique but you left out that training technique where you flex all the muscles that you're using as hard as you can at once while at the same time do the strikes as fast & hard as you can for a single strike/combo then release your flex for a few seconds to do it all over again. This gives speed, strength, tones, & builds a slight size of lean muscles all at once. It's not easy at all for those who have never done it before. If you know the name of this technique, drop it in the comments below!

Strongly disagree on the weighted shadow sparring. You only feel faster after putting the weights down because your central nervous system still thinks your arms are heavier than they are, and is still overcompensating until it adjusts back to the real weight. Moreover, you have to tense your arms, slowing your punches down, to keep hold of the weights throughout. Although one odd benefit I got from it way back when was no longer pulling my biceps when doing a backfist.

im not completely sure but i think resisting gravity with weights strengthens your shoulders and increases your punch speed (i guess)

It worked in the opposite way for me...i did weighted shadow boxing...that slowly over time improved my shoulder strength and endurance....then without the weight, i was able to land more powerful punch since my hands were trained with weights that increased my power delivery....

yes, explosive push ups are great! also THINK fast, put it in your mind to be fast. be relaxed then whip or snap your punch and don't just close your fist at the end, squeeze your first, which will flex your forearm and tricep for a strong, stiff and powerful jab that could rock your opponent.

Another good tip for hand speed thats really simple in theory but difficult in practice is to work on just styaing loose throughout the motion. People tend to tense up and force power. Relax your shoulders and torso, and stay fluid until right at the point of impact. Learning to not push with your punches and to stay fluid is a game changer.

    4) Make your hand technique as efficient as possible in movement. Many people lose speed on punches by making elementary mistakes that make punching take longer to travel than they need to.

Weighted shadow boxing isnt very effective because the weight is pulling down, not back, and you need the weight to go against your punch. You can use weight while lying on the ground so that your punches are up, in the opposite direction of the weights, or use resistance bands.

You don't need lats training, you will accidentally train them, you need to do tons of shoulder exercise tho like tons of pushups and burpees, and explosive pushups. Shoulder endurance is important bcuz in the ring your shoulders are gonna get tired and force your hands to fall down which drops your power.

You are correct with the 'explosive' exercises such as with push ups as those are the muscles for that hook, but also in general there are 'explosive' versions of leg and pulling exercises as well. The main factors for increasing speed, and power, is isometrics, both yielding and overcoming, and the 'one minute' or extremely slow versions of exercises. Finally it's relaxation. these mainly develop speed of your own body. However that's one type of speed based on body movement and muscle tension, but there are a few types of speed like reaction time to the opponent's punches, to an object's velocity traveling to you, and perception time, meaning what your eyes will pick up on subconsciously which almost automatically adjusts your hands, feat, overall guard and stance for the incoming punch. Drills like with a helmet and ball attached to some spring wire, or controlled sparring were it's only defense and evasion being focused on, and several more exercises for reaction time.

It's also a good idea to work on retracting your punches as fast as you can. People focus on the positive phase of the punch but not so much on the negative phase. Work on the retraction and watch the speed go up

I used to use dumbells for my punches, I would practice combos to to help resist the force I'd be using but after putting them on the rack it does give you a lightened up feeling. I would start with 15, then 20 then 30 which is where I failed at. After a warm up I would start at 30 then work down to 10 and even 5's so increase my reps. 5's felt like 20's after all the work. This does increase speed and upper shoulders and triceps. Even regular shoulder presses will help. It's all resistance.
