People often ask about what they can do to better take care of their eyes. In this video, Dr. Allen shares 3 health tips to improve your eyes and prevent health conditions from progressing. If you value your eye health and eyesight, then incorporating these health tips should be helpful.
After a routine eye exam, these are the top 3 tips I like to discuss so that people can take better care of their eyes and prevent vision loss. The first thing is to eat healthy. The retina in the back of the eye is the most highly metabolic tissue in the body and requires a lot of antioxidants to protect itself from oxidative damage and inflammation. Green leafy vegetables are rich in Lutein which has been found to be great for your eyes.

I also encourage people to clean their eyelashes on a daily basis. That is because a lot of people neglect to clean their eyelids and eyelashes and it is common to see inflammation of the eyelids and dry eye as a result.

Very interesting. When I changed my diet after a mild heart attack, my annual eye exams continuously showed improvement requiring a new script. Kiddingly, I told my ophthalmologist that it must be the carrots, and he said it was more likely the spinach. Thanks for this great information!

I got freaked out when you were cleaning your eyes. Generally, because I have mutated mucous membranes I tend to brush my teeth carefully, but enjoyably, avoiding another oral cancer scare. It took me a while to get used to it. Using that device with the brush on the end on your eye reminded me of teeth-brushing, so I just want to say I think you definitely need to only clean your eye slowly, and enjoyably if possible. That's my theory for not accidentally hurting myself further anyhow. Also, more nutritional science will be much appreciated in future, thanks Dr. Allen!

I'm using a eyelid wash that that the eye doctor recommended and you confirmed. I have puffy eye bags all of the sudden which I was told is inflammation from a sinus infection. I was told the inflammation stays in the body longer than the infection itself. But it seems to be really hanging in there and my vision is compromised. I will revisit some of your videos to see if this was addressed. Thank you for your kind service.

My eyes have been hurting for last 7 months. At one point they were throbbing and felt really bruised. I have had an overnight huge increase in floaters, like a storm. No info on anterior floaters online. I know they're not vitreous floaters bc optometrist and dr. looked at them. It seems to just be the front half of my eyes, also when they hurt, they become very bloodshot and floaters become more pronounced. My sinuses right behind my nose hurts or feels inflamed in correlation to the eye pain. No mucus, no infection. Optometrist and Dr. Thought I was healthy, didn't see anything wrong with me. On the days I saw the Dr's, my eyes felt really good though. I've been putting off seeing the ophthalmologist bc I feel like he will not see anything wrong.

  • @Akira-jd2zr

    @Akira-jd2zr

Dilation would do nothing to check for eye discomfort related to dry eyes. Some other types of testing could reveal severe dry eyes. For example, your doctor may "stain" your eyes with a certain eye drop and look at your cornea with the microscope to check for damage to your cornea. Also, other tests (Schirmer's strips) will reveal if you produce enough tears.

I eat many salads (greens) and take Zinc, which I read is good for your eyes. My sight has not come back much yet. Very blurry. Its 3 weeks since surgery. I have 3 more weeks until I get my check up. Ive been so paranoid and have so many questions.

Frequent breaks from your desk/work. Getting good movement and looking into the distance through a window or going for a walk is a good habit. For some people at high risk of eye diseases I have talked about blue light filtering glasses as a possible defense (evidence is mixed at this time). Monitoring for dry eye/MGD signs and symptoms are also important as many people don't blink enough when on digital devices.

I wish you were my eye doc! Where are you located? I had the meanest eye doc yesterday in southern cali. He basically yelled at me for thinking something was wrong with my eye when there wasn’t. I have lattice degeneration and my right eye retina detached so I’m healing from that. Of course I’m worried about my good eye. Do you have any tips for lattice degeneration? Or healing tips for detached retina with pneumatic retinopexy. Thanks for your time!!

Wow thanks Heather. Sorry to hear you had a less than desirable experience with your last exam. I practice at the PineCone Vision Center in Sartell, MN. I wish I had something to recommend for lattice or healing after pneumatic retinopexy, but I really don't have much. What did your retina doctor say?

Does wearing sunglasses affect the melanopsin retinol ganglion cells? Discussed in Huaberman podcast "The Scoence of Vision, Eye Health and seeing Better" around 31 min. It seems to me that wearing sunglasses too much will disrupt the hormone creation. There is also a study on beneficial qualities of sunlight on Vision repair. I think it was done in Apes.

I did not wanted lenses they put after cataract surgery which they proudly say blocking ultraviolet light and blue light. I. Know sunlight has beneficial effect specially morning and evening sun exercise. I don’t know my long term effect on blocking sun on eye 24 hours. Sun provide D , melatonin etc. But no choice now a day I cannot find replacement lenses without filter out sun rays. After some years , they will say new research says it was wrong to do. This research not reliable based on profit

I did a trip to North Carolina at 62 years old, and the more tropical plants caused more allergy problems. I started using eye drops every morning, and it helped so much I kept using the drops after I got home. Nothing fancy, just a generic Visine copy made in Finland, probably higher quality than crap made in China.

Don't use visine...it can make the problem worse. If you want something for allergies, I would recommend OTC Pataday. It recently came off prescription and generally works very well.

I'm on keto diet few years already and I'm eating many dark leafy greens (all which you mentioned). And I'm wearing sun glasses with uv protection all the time when I'm out. And of course, I'm cleaning my eyes, eyelids and eyeleshes every day. But I have got some strange problem: I'm 53 years old and my diopter is - 9. I started at about - 0.5 in my early age and it was only growing all these years till now. But everyone says that - diopter is dropping towards older years, what isn't my case. So what do you think, why is that? (I'm wearing glasses last 10 years, but I was wearing contact lenses about 20 years). Thanks.

Hey Thanks for sharing! About 10% of people with high myopia may continue to progress throughout life. Most people do plateau after age 23-28. Difficult to say why your powers have not started to decrease because there are so many factors (axial length, cornea curvature, lens refractive index/ cataract development, etc). How is your eyesight overall with the glasses/contacts? Pretty good still?

@@DoctorEyeHealththank you for answer. Yes, I see very well with my glasses on both eyes. But without glasses I see just peaks in my direct vicinity (which is because of my- diopter, of course). Only on right eye everything is some darker then on left (like on my left eye is day, but on my right eye is twilight - all the time - with glasses or without glasses. And I don't know why is that, either.) Sorry for my bad English, it isn't my native language.

Do eyes improve in my mid-20s if I have a mild prescription? It was my first time using the green red machine, and I had no idea what to look for, and they didn't explain it to me. I had no idea that the green and red part letter should match the sharpness on both side. I'm not sure if there an error because of it. I been staring my computer since pandemic and there no way my eye sight improved. 2022: sph cyl axis OD plano -0.75 151 OS -0.25 -0.50 7 2020: sph cyl axis OD -0.25 -0.75 163 OS -0.25 -0.75 6 2018: sph cyl axis OD -0.75 -0.5 158 OS -0.50 -0.5 171

Hi, thank you for the great tips as always! I have a quick question about contact lenses. I have been using a standard hydrogel lens for years, and recently tried upgrading, so I decided to try Biotrue and Precision 1. I find that both, with the same prescription aren't quite as sharp as my old contacts for things far away. When I put one of each lens in my eyes I also find that my eyes switch between which one looks sharper from left to right eye when Biotrue and Precision 1 are in each eye. My question is, do eyes need time to adjust to the optical properties of new lenses? Or is it to to do with the size of the optical zone being bigger on my old lens maybe? I noticed I had this issue last year when trying a different brand of SiHy lenses Vs my old ones, but after three days of wearing the SiHy lenses my vision started to get sharper, but I always seem to find my old lenses are the sharpest. Main reason I wanted to upgrade is for end of day dryness which leads to blurred vision at night with my old lenses.

Yeah.... I'll soon try to get an appointment in with an optramatrist....I have poor vision in my left eye. Basically I get white blotches, like what ya get from having an aura migraine....but perminately.... With a mix of blur. I'll close my right eye, and that's what I see...it makes it hard to read....and I wear glasses.... This has been going on for a few months now. Though, I'll admit, I do need new glasses...mainly cause my current are really old. I see fine with my right eye in them though.
