    I really love your vids! They're so educational! I really need your advice. I started working here in the US last year. I started with a Wells Fargo secured credit card because it's located just right across my workplace and it was easy. It's in good standing and I pay it off every month and I've never paid any interest. My credit scores were Experian 663, Transunion 662 and Equifax 662. Then I got the Kohl's Charge Card last month. A week after that, I got the Walmart Credit Card, the TJ Maxx Credit card and the JCPenney Credit Card. Again, all of them are in good standing and I just made 1st payments on all of them. I was never late and I never paid any interest. Now, because of my credit card applications, I ended up with 5 hard inquiries. This resulted my Transunion to dip to 619 and my Equifax to dip to 622. I haven't checked Experian yet. I will be travelling by September and I really want to get a Capital One Platinum Mastercard now because of the $0 foreign transaction fees. Should I wait until next month? Or should I risk getting it now?

    Probably inquiries and a hit to your average age of accounts. Capital One focuses on subprime so a $620 might be fine, but I would wait a few months for your score to rise again.

    Your videos are so helpful and mind clearing, thanks Sebby!! I just got to the US 3 years ago and had no idea about credit building. Currently have 19 months of credit history, 5 accounts (never late payments), 50% of utilization, carrying balances on AMEX ~6,000, and VISA ~5,000. I'm considering paying off completely both of them due to high interests %, either by 1) opening 2 new credit cards with good length of free APR/BT; or 2) 1 credit card and a loan. My idea is to have good/excellent credit scores within the next ~3 years for a mortgage. What option do you see more convenient at this time? Thanks again!

    No limit. I know people with 20+ inquiries(combining pulls) and are at 30/24 who are still sitting at 750-780. NOT suggesting you do this, since it's extreme, but I wouldn't necessarily be too worried. It just depends on if you're willing to take 2 steps back (for the 3 steps forward).

    What do you mean before statement closes? Are you wanting to makesure you pay whatever balance down to 0-9% before the statement is generated? So for example you pay in full every month, but my statement generates on the 8th of every month let's say Janurary 8th. Do you want your balance to be at 0-9% before that statement is made out? So that the Februrary due date is the amount equaling to 0-9% utilization rate?

  • @mindsetwithmarie676

    @mindsetwithmarie676

    Yes, the % is based on what is the statement. To pay a portion of your bill before, find out what is your statement closing date and get the balance reduced by that date for it to reflect on the statement.

    Thoughts on applying for the Chase Freedom, Chase AARP, and Chase Slate at the same time (I know about 2/30 with chase, but I have a good relationship with my banker so I hope he can get me through; otherwise my target is just the Freedom and AARP)? I already have the CSR and Freedom Unlimited. The goal would be to upgrade the Chase Slate to the Chase Freedom later on (I think I read that I can't apply for two of the same Chase Cards at the same time).

  • @AskSebby

    @AskSebby

    That sounds fine. There's not much advantage of applying in-person though -- your banker doesn't really play a role in terms of credit issuance decisions. They can call reconsideration for you but the process is the same. For me, it feels like a huge waste of time going in-branch for the same thing I can do online.

  • @Clavicade007

    Oh thanks, for the insight. I didn't realize that. I think I'll just apply online then, the banker I was dealing with seemed to be a bit full of himself anyways. :) Also would you recommend not applying for a card if you currently have a balance on your main card? I always pay in full via auto pay but that hasn't kicked in yet.

    OK so question. Let’s say I have $100 in total available credit. I have two credit cards, $50 each. If I max out one, is my total utilization 50%? Or do I get reported as a high risk user because I maxed one out?? The answer to this would really help me out

    Do you really think the CSR doesn't add value long term and is a card we should downgrade after the first year? I've LOVED my experience with it. Curious as to your reasoning.

  • @eflo8264

    Steven Guevara I was wondering the same thing. It seems like a better deal than the Amex Platinum because the $300 yearly credit can be used for any travel expense, and not a preselected airline. Also, every time I've had to call the CSR line, I get a live agent right away

  • @AskSebby

    For clarity, I'm keeping my CSR long-term. I make the CSR comment for the people who "don't see why anyone would ever pay $450 for a credit card" -- just to illustrate the value.

    You should be paying it off in full. I'm referring to pre-paying it. i.e., you go out to eat for $20.50. You immediately pay off $20.49 that night (instead of the whole $20.50). If you still don't get it, I would keep watching more videos or read the post that explains it in clear detail.

    Just to make sure I understand it: say I have a $200 limit, #1 should I spend however much I want and pay it off before the statement period? Or #2 should I try to use only 10% of my card? #3 some people are telling me to keep an open line of credit and carry over a small amount each month (I don’t believe that builds credit though), just want to know how much I should spend out of $200 and when to pay it, before the statement period or end of the month/cycle?

  • @MaxMikescrool1

    @MaxMikescrool1

    2 is best for credit building. The rewards on $200/mo cant be worth much and keeping a balance is a horrible idea! It doesnt help at all. Keeping low utilization will allow you to get more cards, and you can spend $200/mo on the card once your credit limit is at $2000. Thinking long term is the best way to go with credit cards.

    Wait so if I got approved for a card with a limit of 300 credit, keeping my spending limit low per month and paying in full every month will increase my credit score? Also wouldn’t that make my credit limit on the card low since I’ll be waisting money per month

  • @darrellbrown8527

    @darrellbrown8527

    Yes, It would make your credit limit low, but as long as you don't spend more than 30% of the $300 credit limit = no more than $90. You're not really wasting money when you already spend it on gas for transportation.

    If I don't use the card that month, I just keep it at $0 and don't worry about it. The main benefit of the $1 is to add "on-time payments" -- I've had interesting recon calls with Citi where they were confused how I had >10 cards but no "recent payments for last 2-3 months" since I paid it down to $0 every few days. YMMV and do what makes sense for you.

    I don't see why so many people are so antsy about getting inquiries. Let's assume perfect record in everything else but one person has 10 inquiries and the other 1-2, then the person with 10 inquiries can get a max score of 90/100 (A-) vs 97.5/100 so A+. So, unless you *really* want that 800+ score, I don't think it really matter as much as some people make it out to be.

    If you watch FICO score videos by David Howe, he mentions how you must have at least one revolving balance and one installment loan paid off 45-55% for the maximum optimized score. He's been able to achieve 850 fico scores across all three bureaus at the same time plus perfect credit karma vantage scores.
