    Alex I have to say that Neons are not real happy at temperatures above 80, their home waters in the clear water rivers near Iquitos in Peru are cooler than most tropical biomes. Optimally about 72 degrees but you can reliably keep them at 68 to 77 degrees, they live longer at 68 to 72. Like most Tetras from soft waters they like soft water over hard water. They will live OK in GH over 10 but breeding is difficult and full colors are going to be less vibrant.

  • @voluntaryismistheanswer

    Life is too darn complicated, so the first cardinals I actually have doing ok are going to need to go to a cooler tank? (Or to move my rams, argh.) Or is that just a neon specific thing? (I can see I am going to have to research yet more, sigh.)

  • @Fishtory

    @Fishtory

    3 жыл бұрын

    They may not be super happy, but blue neons can withstand those Temps and easily do so, for treating ick. But yes, as with all fish, the lower end of their thriving temperature range, will cause them to usually live longer and be more vivid. Green neon tetras can withstand more acidity by far, as they are only a black water fish in the wild. But they cannot handle the higher temperatures (over 84) for more than a few weeks usual

    For some reason, my cardinal tetras are not as vivid red as I see in some videos. They live in a heavily planted tank with pristine water set to 80F during the day that can drop to 76 at night. At peak lighting intensity, it might be a bit harsh for them, but the light only stays at peak for 8 hours out of my 18 hour photoperiod, and lights are very dim in the morning and at night. They looked in bad condition when I got them from the store and have colored up somewhat, but they’re still not this vivid. I overfeed them a high-carotenoid diet of tetra-color tropical flakes to fatten them up a bit as they were originally emaciated, it has been three weeks now and they appear in good health.

Thank you for being so chill with us noobs and our silly questions- btw, as a master gardener I'm often appalled by how silly questioners are treated in this hobby- if I rolled my eyes are hard as some 'advanced' aquarists to folks who don't have fifty years of binomials under their belt, with where a plant originated, and how Irish monks used it in 1254 when they are just asking me, 'HEY, CAN I PUT THIS OVER HERE?', I would feel like a jerk (and not a real Master at all- the real ones are so gentle on the rest of us trying to play catch up in the biggest illustration of Dunning Kruger I've ever witnessed in my life- I keep mentally hearing 'You know nothing, Jon Snow!' 😄 and I really don't). I started with a little flock of cardinals on your recommendation, and they look excellent, but boy did it make those little rams spicy to have to share the tank! I was going to put my kubotais in there, but I'm leaning towards the black metal guppy tank after watching the little cichlids get 'comfortable'. I wish the high heat wouldn't shorten neocaridina lives so much (I don't heat my shrimp tanks after a cheap heater disaster 😔), I wonder if the thai microcrabs or a bigger filtering shrimp would make the tank more peaceful than corys, for bottom cleanup? They actually had sterbais for once at the LFS, but I don't think I want the hungry swarm upsetting my rams (if they actually pair, I can't tell what they are at this age, lol). And tbh the rams do a fair job of picking the stray bloodworm of the gravel, it's not like they let much go to waste- they're pretty thorough. 😛
