How to Hunt and Attract Feral Pigeons
They say "you are what you eat". Well, the same applies to these birds. A lot of my city friends would wrinkle their noses when I mentioned that I sometimes eat feral pigeons. But, that is because they only have the image of their city pigeons, rooting around at the base of dumpsters and garbage cans. These country pigeons grew up eating corn and grain. So, they actually taste pretty good. And if you are lucky enough to get your hands on few young ones, they are downright delicious.
I shoot these birds regularly. In part to keep their numbers from swelling out of control, and also to feed my pets and (on occasion) myself. If you bag 10-12 of them, they make for a nice pie.
One last point of interest: The feral pigeons from the "old world" (that is you Europe and Asia) are genetically different from the feral pigeons in the "new world" (N and S America). This is because the old-world ferals got loose from their captors 1000's of years ago. The feral in the Americas are recent escapees. Their lineage is less than a couple hundred years old because the ferals here (in the U.S.) are not descendants of old world ferals. They are descendants of old world domestic pigeons brought over here on ships.
Hence, "our" feral pigeons are more genetically similar to "your" domestic pigeons than your ferals. Kind of cool, eh? That also might play a part in their flavor - just a thought...
ANSWER TO WHAT WAS WRONG AT THE TOP OF THE GRAINBIN:
The corn is MUCH taller!!! The footage from atop the grainbin was filmed 3 months after the rest of the footage. On my original trip, I had forgotten to record the scene. So, I returned later, but by then....much had changed with the corn. :)

The slow-motion camera I use to film the shots through the scope is the Casio EX-FC150. That camera is no longer made, but you can buy its successor (which is actually a better camera than the one I use) here:

This is why I like your channel Ted, not just the good shots and the Bad Ass Air Guns. But the information you share with us and teach new hunters and shooters such as myself. Keep up the good work Buddy.
Absolutely love your videos. I grew up on a farm as well. Some of the readers don't realise that you care very much for all of the animals and do not shoot indiscriminately. That is what farmers, gardeners, naturalists, and game managers do. I also have been fortunate to get a good job, but it is a city so I very much enjoy your combination of geekiness and nature study. Thank you for these.
I like how you give the cats food. Very thoughtful and nice.

Thanks ted for all these videos. I really love your humble attitude and passion that we get to see. You have one of my favorite outdoorsman type channels and a lot of others guys could learn a lot from you. I also really appreciate your video quality and the time spent editing and filming. All your shots are focused, audio is clear, and the multiple camera angles provide really interesting view points. Thanks again.

I'm a city boy but I really want to buy a farm or something out in one of these rural states. It's so beautiful out there. I cant find the vid where the pigeon is popped open with corn spewing out! Help meh Ted!
Young pigeons are good to eat ! I was raised on a cattle ranch and had lots of pigeons. If you get several young ones you can cook them with potatoes, carrots and celery and make several meals. Think of this as possible survival food. If this world goes crazy and there is no food in the grocery store pigeons and squirrels will taste very good !
i admire your steady aim
Guys im not being funny if you dont like hunting dont watch hunting videos its as simple as that alot of people are different and you need to realise that. im not asking you to be 100% hunting im just asking you to see reason that there are reasons for doing so. P.S Hunting is not killing, hunting is about survival in this case its ted's cats :)
they are delicious, i would love to hunt one or two down
I love your vids. Keep up the good work!
Feral Pigeons are wild pigeons. They are good to eat. It is going to come a time when people will kill and eat just about anything. These videos are a great teaching tool. We used to have lots of pigeons. With some potatoes, carrots, celery you can make a great meal ! Yum Yum !

" A lot of my city friends would wrinkle their noses when I mentioned that I sometimes eat feral pigeons." now thats so wrong...

Truth is, you're giving these birds a death that's far less cruel than a raptor, disease, or overpopulation would. And I learned a few things today, which is great. Keep up the interesting educational videos. Cheers from Minneapolis.

excellent videos!
I was about to rant something along the lines "I find it funny you wrote 'hunting' pigeons" like it's real game.. Well now I did... never mind, I read the description and it changed my mind. Oh, and not to mention that the "actual video" is (or seems) very professional and well put together. Nice.
Cool. I never had it explained to me about the monocular vision of pigeons. By the way, those fleshy bits at the base of the beak are called 'wattles'. It's a marvelous thing to see these corn-engorged, wing-clapping pests trumped by the pellet, time after time. Keep up the good work, my friend.
I loved that "neck shot".

Great job, with the making of your video! I can see why you have so many hits.
I love your vids and how you actually educate people while entertaining. "Now, the history of pigeons... This is a checkered pigeon based on.... They have monocular vision but overcome by bobbing their heads... POP! Nailed him right in the neck!!"
