Crow Hunting - Ricochet Investigation

A serendipitous lesson in pellet energy and shot placement.
Equipment details:
The Camera Mount I used to record through the scope can be found here:

You actually grazed the crow when you first say you missed at 1:17. Take a look at how many small breast feathers flew off just as it started to fly off. I'm surprised it came back at all. You really had something it wanted in your garden.

Awesome video!!! Very educational. I'm a deer Hunter so we always go for the Heart or lungs. Especially with a bow, the deer doesn't even know what happened and then they just get woozy, black out, and they're done. You can tell they don't really feel it because often you can shoot a deer and it will run a few steps, then just fall over. Never knew anything except hearing the bow.

so i was driving down the back roads and i seen this kid with a sling shot, mean while, im on my way to work and take the backroads enjoying the scenery of the amish farmlands. this day i happened to have my crosman 2240 custom,@650fps. this kid about 11-14 (he actually was 11 lol) peaks out the side of the tree, the crow goes to take off, he raises his shot about a inch in a instant crow hops, he releases bops it on the back of the head. i turn and look where hes standing and he has about 3-6 crows behind him on the ground, i asked the kid if he has taken all those birds with the slingshot, he yells for his dad, at this point im thinking omg, kids going for a stranger danger, so i stay waiting for his dad who he was calling, and tells em to show me the "VIDEO" the dad pulls out his cell phone, and as im watchin his dad is in a elivated posistion (bathroom window lol) watchin his son the whole time, (good father) im watchin the video, and after 10 seconds im demanding a replay/rewind/slowmotion haha, the whole nine, b/c this kid took a headshot on a crow, grazed about 40% of the left side of the crows head, knocked it out cold, it ricocheted went a little to the left but still in a good foward direction, and hit the other crow on the neck, he ran up and gave the crow with the neck shot a follow up because im sure it just crushed its throat leaving it in pain, but the 11 year old ran up with a deadly follow up to the head, man... that kid has the best shot around these parts! (no he wasnt amish lol).

I’d mow our 1-acre yard with a crow on each shoulder! They were really as smart as you say. They were teachable and adept at problem-solving in their own unique way. They’d take sticks to swab out peanut butter from the bottom of the jar.

I've read researches about crows and crow hunting, obviously. And it seems that if you shot/attack one of them, they can remember you, even attack you back, specifically you. And they also, pass the word to the others crows, even further generation. And the flock would avoid that "dangerous" area. They are one the very few animals able to built and use tools in other to get food.

No, the head is a very low percentage shot, if you are not exact you blow off the jaw or nose, the lungs on a deer are at least 20x larger than the brain. Shoot for the lungs and you eat steak, shoot for the head and you "might" eat steak.

Did the crow see you with the gun and put together 2+2 that guns are dangerous for his health? So is it possible that crows and other birds can figure out that an airgun sound means someone is shooting at them nearby? Should hunters play a sound recording of airgun pings to habituate birds to the sound before hunting them?

Talk to bow hunters, they ALL use heart, lung shot, and accept that while the animal may run 5 - 150 meters it is still quick and painless enough to be acceptable. The bigger the animal the bigger the reserves, the longer it may run. Head shots if you can, sure. But I have taken a lot of body shots with an airgun to see them fall like that crow did. Dead in mid air and falling. Especially when I am hunting pests like Starlings, pigeon, I take whatever shot I can take that is a good shot.

I've also had some crow shots that were instant(at 55yards) because they were through the heart/lungs. The biggest trouble with killing a crow is NOT hitting Wing feathers. They're like a shield. If you slip one behind their wing, they're done.

Daryl Troyer I've shot hundreds of these irritating, horrible, pathetic, ugly pieces of shit and would love to rid the world of these horrible vermin. All they do is attract attention everywhere they go, and a non predatory animal that is not a raptor (bird of prey) so is potentially prey to raptors and other predators they aint too clever, non predatory animals get by, by not attracting attention and blending in. Thats how we manage to kill so many of these horrible things as we hear them long before we even see them so gives us the chance to get the guns loaded and ready, they really are pathetic irritating pieces of flying dog shit.

Thanks for your reply 31maJ :), and like yourself I agree that pellet placement is key and can normally shoot under a 1 1/2 inch group at 40 yds standing ( obv much tighter from rest or bipod(wind permitting)) ,the only reason I purchased the .177 was for pigeons as head on they require a head shot with my .22 for clean knockdown where the .177 can pen the breast and bone with ease , but like yourself the .22 is my favorite for hunting.

Owning a Weihraugh HK80 .22 I think the energy lost hitiing the branch made the pellet deliver all its remaining energy in the bird. As opposed to passing though carrying all its energy straight through. So 12fps would go straight, like a skewer. But 6fps deliveres all its energy decellerating through, more of a slam. Love your work.

People don't know that crows are vicious raiders and killers of other birds, even some bigger than them. All the songbirds and other small animals are victims to these ruthless marauders. Attack and kill then eat them, raid nests and destroy eggs, eat chicks, eat the young of other small animals. And they overpopulate. Hunting is required as a conservation effort to maintain a stable healthy population, in balance with the rest of the animals they must co-exist with. Just the same as with coyotes. They devestate the small animal populations (and outdoor pets) when left unchecked. Starlings and Sparrows are non native species that overpopulate driving out our native songbirds until they die off from lack of nesting sites and food. Keep hunting Ted.

All birds in the Corvidae family eat songbirds. They need to get their protein someway. Bluejays are a part of the corvidae family, and they eat songbirds too. I personally never liked crows, or any corvid, because they eat fledglings. It’s sad, but crows aren’t the only ones who eat them. Chipmunks, hawks, cats, dogs, squirrels eat them too.

Crows are being native predators to native prey Don't give some hack idea of ecology here, predators in almost every case give rise to biodiversity like nothing else. It's an overabundance of prey species that cause issues unchecked (because usually we've killed all the predatory species). That's why pest control is such a thing, and why overpopulation of animals like deer actually makes sense (In wilderness, the predator population would rise until the prey population was sustained and then they would both level out to a holding capacity). We hunt coyote's not because they devastate small animal populations, (like domestic cats, an invasive, artificially sustained predator can) but because yes, they WILL also attack pets/farm animals (which humans dont like) they're scary to people (which we don't like) and they make us worry about tiny... I guess infants that are being allowed to wander around unguarded (primal fear/protection response) Starlings/sparrows - non-natives that out-compete their neighbors and lower the biodiversity I understand, hunting natural parts of our own ecosystem I don't. That said, the mans a farmer, he's hunting a specific crow that's being a nuisance to his property/food I have literally no problems with anything I've seen on this channel, they aren't exactly endangered and Ted hunts with the right mindset/intention. Sorry for the rant, I just don't particularly like seeing that specific argument used without a lot of consideration.

JoeB191145 I started shooting crows on my property after they raided nests. The truly despicable thing was they waited until the nestlings were almost ready to fledge. So all of that time and energy the parents spent was wasted. Plus, you could hear the parent birds in distress as it was happening, it was awful. I know it's nature, but I'm in the city; there are tons of crows.

except unlike crows, in the State of Virginia, it's open season all year round on coyotes with no license required and a bounty of $75 a head. i don't know if my info is outdated though as i was first told a few years ago.

according to their perverse worldview ( animal rights activists), it's fine for an animal to kill another animal, but if a person kills an animal its wrong. Their Regressive, brainwashed conclusion actually elevates the worth and role of animals above human's and demonstrates their evil thoughts and intent. They are twisted.

When in fact the chance of surviving a head shot is very high since the cranium bone structure is the one of the thickest if not THE thickest in the entire body. This is why hitman when killing someone up close make one shot in the head and two to the heart. Ensures the target does not survive or is rescued by paramedics.

timmy vindiesel do you have any idea how hard it is to shoot an animal that is full flight, panicked and probably has a chunk of eye/skull hanging off? the real reason they dont use a headshot with deer/pigs is because the skull is designed to take the impact of males fighting each other and also because the bullet will likely deflect. the heart/lung shot has more chance of dropping the animal almost instantly, it may not be dead instantly but once blood circulation is cut from the body its not going to run far and probably pass out from lack of oxygen to the brain (deer dont practice holding their breath like humans so it will effect them quicker).

Your assumptions about crow intelligence are correct. Many years ago I lived on a far that had hundreds of pecan trees. On a hillside across the road hundreds of crows roosted in the tree tops of post oaks. As the pecan began to ripen the birds would swarm into the pecan grove and wreck havoc on the nuts. When we went after them with shotguns they would leave only to come back once we vacated the scene.

Ted, I agree with you. I have taken many squirrels, rabbits, and rats with heart/lung shots. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is more of an ego trip to take the "head shot" due to the smaller lethal area versus the larger target area of the heart and lungs. Interested video.

I shot a crow a few days ago off a telephone pole from about twenty yards away with my .177 ruger Blackhawk break barrel. I hit him just above the left leg and the pellet exited in the lower right breast. He flew slowly about forty five yards then dropped out of the sky. As far as I'm concerned it wasn't the best shot but it died real fast. It died quicker than I thought it would, honestly. Great video btw
