How to Hold Your Bass & Posture | StudyBass

Музыка

How to hold your bass is an essential topic. It affects the rest of your technique, hand positions, fatigue, risks of physical injuries, and how fast you learn.
In this video I give you a number of practical tips on holding your bass and posture and the reasons behind them. Everyone is different, and you should experiment. You may not think what is practical looks cool or great on stage. I don't disagree. Performing is a different animal. You'll need to decide a balance between the look and the practicality of how you hold your bass.
Be sure to see more on the StudyBass lesson page:
www.studybass.com/lessons/bass...
I've linked a number of pictures of great bass players and how they hold their bass.

    Hey studybass, if you're still monitoring comments on this, thank you for posting this video. The info in your video, plus your response to other commenters here, has been a big help. Like someone else who commented, it was painful for me to bend my right wrist downward the way I see many other bassists playing. I couldn't figure out how to keep my wrist straight, until I saw your video. I took your advice and positioned my bass guitar so the headstock is about the level of my face, and the body of the bass is lower, even when sitting, and that enables me to have a straighter wrist. It also means my right arm isn't scrunched up. I can extend it more comfortably. I came to bass guitar from a background of playing guitar and double bass, but neither of those instruments gave me the right-hand technique for bass guitar. The bass guitar is very much its own instrument. Thanks again for the help!

    Hi I commented on a different video but I’ll try it here also, having a hard time getting started with the right hand in terms of how to hold it relaxed with minimal wrist bend where I can reach all the strings. I’m going to invest in a padded strap so that should help with the fatigue with the left shoulder and back, but I’m still confused on proper right hand position.

  • @StudyBass

    @StudyBass

    4 жыл бұрын

    Is this when standing? Bent wrists are often due to the angle at which you're holding the bass. Try to get the headstock inline with your eyes, and where you pluck near your waist. Some basses can have bad weight distribution and neck dive. A good strap makes a big difference. Look up some of your favorite players and see if you can imitate the way they hold their bass. There are many variables in this part and it will require experimentation. It may not seem like an intensive activity, but it will require developing some new stamina and getting used to something completely new. Good luck!

    Great videos. I think you missed talking about positioning plucking hand and wrist angle etc. I actually find the way you have your right wrist, rather bent, is uncomfortable and mechanically would be better with a straight wrist. When using a computer keyboard we want the wrist as straight as possible to prevent RSI. Anyway, I think you missed discussion on this important point! Thanks

  • @StudyBass

    @StudyBass

    Жыл бұрын

    I have an extensive video about RSI on my lengthy to-do list. If you follow the guidance of angling your bass with the headstock close to eye-level, you will find both wrists straighten out. There are example pictures of well-known players on the actual lesson page (StudyBass is not a KZread channel; only some lessons are found here). The more horizontal your bass, the more your wrist angle increases which, as you know, is one of many contributing risk factors for developing RSI. If I update this video, it would be good to explain this in more detail. Thanks!

    Hey Andrew! I have just started to play the bass. I constantly find myself moving my elbow towards my body with the fretting hand while playing. It hurts and I don't understand where my elbow should be in order to play right and without pain or pressure. I hope you can help me with that. Thanks!

  • @StudyBass

    @StudyBass

    6 жыл бұрын

    Is this while sitting or standing? It's unclear what hurts. Hand? Elbow? Nothing should hurt. I suggest tucking your fretting hand elbow in--keep it close to your body. You likely need to experiment with different strap heights and angles to find where things feel comfortable. Start with a comfortable position with your arm bent as when playing and place the bass in that spot by adjusting its height and angle. Almost all beginners press too hard which causes them pain or soreness. Play slowly and pay attention to how hard you're pressing. Press as lightly as possible right behind the fret; see how little pressure you can get away with. This one thing fixes many problems. Sometimes you're plucking too hard which causes you to fret too hard. Try turning up your amp and pluck more lightly, too.

    Hi, what do you thing about sitting position like the one for the classic guitar (instrument on the left leg)?

  • @StudyBass

    @StudyBass

    3 жыл бұрын

    Anything is possible and a number of people do that. I usually don't recommend it. Classical guitars are much shorter and weigh much less. Many Classical guitar players don't use a strap. Bass guitars are longer and heavier. A strap is essential. That position may require you to extend your left arm more than necessary. Try it and see. Overall, figure out your position when standing and using a strap. Then, try to mimic it while sitting. And, spend half of your practice time standing.

    Hey Andrew Sir, How are you doing today, sorry I have not been on your website practing through the learning blocks, they have been trying to kill us at work all the time, but I was wondering if you could help me with a question about transposeing, super easy and a quick way to, I have only been learning for about 8 months now pretty much own my own, I have been playing the bass guitar for our church, all I can do is play by chord sheets music and that's it, but quite often they change a song from let's say key of d, to the key of G, and some times it's right before we play Sunday, so then that puts me out, all do you have a video on KZread about learning by ear also? They love me at church on how I am playing the bass, but I am very basic stuff, and I want to be able to get to a point I can play what ever song is put in front of me, with no problems, and be a deep grooving bassist, I love the bass, but I feel like I am stuck and not going anywhere or never be any good at all, and the way they work us I don't have much free time, thank you for your help and information about learning music and the bass.

    Hi Scotty, this is a big topic. What will help you the most are the diatonic chord lessons in SBFIII: www.studybass.com/study-guide/studybass-fundamentals-three/diatonic-chords-of-the-major-scale/ When you learn to number the chords within the key, you'll be able to quickly transpose from any key to any other key. You need to recognize progressions like C-G-Am-F and A-E-F#m-D are the same (I-V-vi-IV). Once you understand that, it is a matter of knowing your keys inside and out. Learn to identify the notes in each key instantly. What is the 6th in the key of C major? A What is the 6th in the key of A major? F# and so on... With that you can quickly number a progression and transpose it into any other key. Naturally, start with the keys most often used at your church. (Probably C, G, D, A and E.) No one has free time and no one will give you any. You have to make time. It might be the hardest part of learning to play. Make a time inventory of your life and see what you can give up. Can you get up 15 minutes earlier? Daylight savings (US) falls back tomorrow and will make it easier. Start a new habit and practice for 15 minutes every morning. Try more if you can. Most importantly: Aim for daily...any amount. The beginning is always the hardest part. Just keep practicing. You can't always see your progress. It's like watching your hair grow. It's happening. Many things you practice don't show up in your playing for 6 months. Be patient and keep doing the work. Your life will be better from it. What you're going through is what we all go through--struggles, self-doubt, confusion, train wreck gigs, fear. It's all normal. Don't quit! Andrew

    studybass Hey Andrew, thank you so much for all that info and and knowledge that you have, I love my bass guitars and music so much,i don't want to quit, but it very hard to do alot of stuff each day, with work family and friends and Church, and stuff around the house also, I do want to be as good as you are on the Bass guitar! But it will take more than 8or 9 months that I have been playing, and practing I know, I do have to say I know 90 percent of the fret board, I know all the major scale and minor scale major and minor triads, and the number system and how it works out in the scales and modes, I still have to think about it all some, but if you give me a second i can tell you or show you were or what it is on the bass guitar ,but i don't know how all of it,or how everything goes together yet, but like you said it going to take a good while to get to were I can play really good, so I will be patience and just try to practice at least a few minutes a day, hey and your answer is very helpful thank you so much.

    Sorry for my slow reply. I'm buried in a major website upgrade. Yes, the neck will naturally rest pointed away from you. Both elbows will be by your side--not in front of or behind your torso. Try to position things where you feel it's the least amount of work to hold it in place. You need to experiment with the strap a lot. Some straps are grabby and others slippery. Depending on the strap, bass and player's body, the strap can work for you or against you. Keep at it. The beginning is the worst part.

  • @StudyBass

    4 жыл бұрын

    You are right--I should have addressed it. I didn't mention it because I wouldn't recommend it. Classical guitar and electric bass are very different instruments. Classical guitars are 8 inches shorter, weigh less, they're almost always played while sitting, and where one most often plays on the neck is different. Adopting that position for bass will shift the bass too far over forcing you to reach more for the low frets where most bass parts are played. When you stand, the bass will wind up shifted back over. That's why I suggest finding a sitting position/chair which mirrors the location of the bass when standing. For beginners, consistency makes a huge difference. But, by all means everyone should experiment. That position may work for some.
