I've been playing bass for almost 5 years now and some of these techniques I wish I had known when I first started playing. Thank you very much this has been very helpful in terms of good body posture for playing bass

Your technique videos are incredibly well produced, succinct, and informative. I’m a guitar/piano player dabbling in bass and these videos have been instrumental in helping me hone in on the idiosyncrasies of bass guitar. Appreciate it!

Started playing bass while I was in the hospital to kill time and ended up loving it, but my broke ass can’t pay for lessons and this series is just what I needed right now 💛✌️

Osodan Inpatient ward where I was for 8 weeks had rec therapy, donated instruments and stuff you could play and even get a few lessons for. On weekend passes they even let me sign the bass and amp out to take with me.

I was having major back pain lately and it was discovered that I have scoliosis. Probably had it all my life but as I’ve gotten older it’s effecting day to day activities (daily practice). I’m in the process of trying to alter my bass position so I don’t hunch and this video was very helpful showing honest pros and cons. Thank you Jayme and love I your podcast.

Hey Jayme... You pointed out things I always overlook... Now I know why there's a hindrance in my bass playing.. I never thought that seating positions have that big of an impact to bass playing.. Thank you so much. God bless 😀

I was watching a Steve DiGiorgio playthrough and he's playing seated, without a strap, bass on his right leg, and with his forearm off the bass. Yet somehow the bass stays in place. I wonder if some basses are just so perfectly balanced (no neckdive) that they'll stay in place with nothing holding them. Or maybe DiGiorgio's just an alien.

I prefer left leg position when sitting, because it is very similar to how it would be when I stand with a strap.

I am just started typing about use both positions and then you said about that at the end of the video, great tips! I totally agree, actually, if you look on bass players who use left leg position most of the time (like Janek Gwizdala and Hadrien Feraud), they spend more time in the higher area of the neck. But if they play just grooves in lower area or slap they often switch to right leg position.

A note on the two sitting positions... I used to always rest the bass on my right leg, that is until I started upping my practice regimen. The first day that I practiced for several hours straight I started getting a lot of pain in my right shoulder. I switched to my left leg and both of my arms just felt a lot more naturally positioned and the shoulder pain went away. It's also worth noting that it simulates the same way you play when standing up. So for me, playing on the left leg really alleviated shoulder pain, and since my sitting/standing orientation is the same, I can play both ways and have the same feel and motor function; this creates a more uniform and consistent feel when playing in both the standing and sitting position. The arpeggios and scales are the the exact same position...the riffs, runs, and solos are the exact same movements. If you have only played with resting your bass on the right leg, I highly encourage you to switch to resting it on the left for a while. You might like it a lot more like I have.

Great video! 👏 As a beginner my advice is find the position which gives the best comfort and your play going to be better and better. There’s differences when you playing seated and stand position. I was practicing on a chair at home and I had difficulties when playing with band standing position. You are right ! Have to find a good comfortable position. Thanks for this video!😉
