How To Hit A Real Golf Draw

Спорт

This tip will show you how to hit a real draw as opposed to just hitting a pull hook which looks similar but is actually a totally different shot.
The draw is the shot that everyone wants to hit as it goes a little longer than a fade and they see lots of pros hitting this shot so they feel they should too. If this is you you need to know the difference between a real draw and a pull hook.
The pull hook is easier to hit and looks like a draw but this is not the shot the pros are hitting. How can you tell? Simple, just watch the pros on TV. When you do you will see that they are aimed square to the target. The ball starts away from the target and draws back. A pull hook would have them aiming into the gallery and hooking it back which they are certainly not doing.
Why learning how to hit a real draw is more difficult is that it takes 2 steps to master it. This tip gives you a great mental image so you can clearly understand each step. So if you want to learn how to draw the ball then you get step 1 then move on to step 2. This is as simple as it gets.

Hi Paul. I have to share this with you. I am 63 yrs old and didn’t take up golf until age 58. About a month ago I adopted your approach primarily to back issues. Today I played 18 with 3 guys in their 30s. I never missed a fairway off the tee and either kept even or out drove these younger guys. They accused me of using an illegal driver because “there is no way you can hit the ball that far with that slow mellow swing”. I use a 2019 Epic Flash driver, hardly illegal. 1 guy was using a Stealth II and the others were using the new Paradyme driver. I’m still laughing and getting ready for a nice steak dinner with the $20 apiece they coughed up because an old man beat them by 3 strokes. Thought you might enjoy hearing this. Thanks againSo much for your dedication to the game!

Wow! Great story. Proof that an effortless swing really does work. One day these young guys will be old guys so maybe they will remember this once they lose serious distance from hitting hard.

Hi Paul - hats off to you for being able to hit these difficult shots and teaching us how to do the same. As for where I am on the golf swing learning spectrum, I am going to nail the Body Swing hitting it as straight as I can on a fairly consistent basis before I delve into the area of hitting draws. Once again, your imagery and ability to simplify complex topics are spot on! Thanks, Dan

Thanks so much. Yes, I like straight or falling right right but I gave in to those wanting to hit a draw. This is super hard to hit so if I can make it simple at least they will get it. For you, stick to the plan. Work on the positions and do daily practice swings. This is the fastest way to get it.

Well when needed you need to do the fake draw. The real draw takes serious work. To do what I call the fake draw just aim the face where you want the ball to land. Aim your body right. Swing right. If so the ball will hook back because the face is preset closed.

This is the way to do it. I learned this shot because it's necessary if you want to turn it over AND hit it high. Pulls never go high. This push draw is actually going to go the furthest as well because you're taking off spin and launching it higher.

Lol! I’m a beginner golfer and I was consistently hitting a pull hook and couldn’t figure out why. I thought about aligning my direction to the far right just so i can make the fairway. Then I started aligning my shoulders so that impact was earlier in my swing and now I’m hitting straight draws without changing my foot alignment. It’s the easiest shot in my limited repertoire. 😂

  • @paulwilsongolf

Well, you seem to be on track now which is a good thing. Just realize that if you start hitting you will hit it left. That is the sign. So as soon as you see a shot like that do practice swings at knee high with loose arms. This will allow you to feel the legs and hips powering the swing. Then you step up and apply this feeling to your shots. Boom! Draw is back.

Glad you are doing well. The pull is you just releasing it a little early. Probably trying to give it a little extra. We are all guilty of doing that. Face has to be open to the path. If you try to hold it off though you get the high right. So I would be practicing daily with an alignment stick on the ground. Aim it down the left side of the fairway and face slightly open. If you aim too much and face too much open your doing to have issues. We are talking a few degrees here.

Hey Paul, what do you say to those proponents of the Modern Swing who say keep the face square and just turn with the body? All the best pros these days don't really have the flip release you teach.

  • @paulwilsongolf

    @paulwilsongolf

    2 жыл бұрын

Here is what I say: I find it funny how some pros start doing this "modern" swing (that I tried 20 years ago) and now that seems to be the swing. Also, funny how none of them are dominating the tour. Then along comes Scottie Scheffler doing and traditional swing and dominates. Why on earth would I ever want to teach people this new "modern" swing? My students are not pros. My students are typically older (60+). Imagine a 75 year trying to do that swing. Their wrists are already locked and they can't turn with any kind of speed. How is that person going to ever hit it anywhere doing that swing? Plus, they literally practice 20 mins before they go to play. My teaching is based on Iron Byron. The hinge on the machine is loose so that is what I'm going to teach. Oh yeah, the machine is 100% and it was modeled after arguably the best golfer of all time. I wouldn't say my release is a flip release (this is a made up description to create a negative). The wrists are loose and arms powerless. Flipping would be the person actively flipping it which is not what I teach. Now if someone is slicing and I want them to hook it I need them to purposely roll it for a while until they can hook it. Once they can they are turning their arms off and using their body. So they are not using their arms and they have no flip. I have been teaching the same way for 31+ years now. I get unreal results super fast. I know my students and what they are capable of even doing. The swing I teach is for life. Anyone of any age can do it forever. This is what I do and if anyone wants to come and see me in action they can. So those are my thoughts about the new "modern" swing. I remember when Byron Nelson came out with the "modern" swing due to the change from hickory to steel shafts which created the best golfers of all time. I guess that's not so modern anymore. Be interesting to see who these new young guys stack up to the likes of the past greats. I know who my money is on.

The "push" draw has always been my natural shot shape...even when I first started. For me its my default shot. I know its a real draw because it starts right of my target line and tuns back. What I have NEVER been able to do is hit a fade on command. That shot is almost impossible for me to hit.

That's because you attack from the inside. You would have to play a push fade as Couple did for year. Got to aim way left though. Not sure you want to hit that shot. Be tricky if you have played that push draw for a long time. If you want to try this then aim the face at the target. Body left where you want it to start. Hit the top of your backswing and to start down think TURN. You turn and the club will swing left not too much from the inside. This should allow you to hit it.

Stand taller and quit swinging too much from the inside. You are over doing the inside out path with a swing that is too tilted. kzread.info/dash/bejne/n22fzJJuZJvYido.html

Maybe with a shot tracer people will finally believe you`re hitting the ball where u say u are, like you`ve said all along!

Not sure why they wouldn't believe me. The tracer does look better thought and now we have an easier way to do it.

It sure is. Too many people think a pull hook is a draw. It is not.

I must have a pulled hook….I put my right foot in the bucket in order to turn my old body and get a full swing up over my head????

Not exactly sure what you are describing here but yes, sounds like a pull hook. If you have the spin why not try squaring up and work on direction. See what happens.

Nonsense. What youre refering to as a "real draw" is actually a "push draw" (a ball that starts right for a righty and comes back to the middle).. what youre refering to as a "pull hook" is just a draw.. thats ehat happens when you draw the ball while aiming at the center. Its cool that you favor a fade but stip texching people inaccurate info.

A pull hook is when is starts left and draws even further left. A draw starts straight and draws left for a rightie and reverse for a lefty

I have argued this point in the past and I do not have time to keep arguing it with you. Yes, a real or true draw is a push draw. On tour this is the draw they hit. They do not aim right and pull hook it left. Just look at shot tracer. The ball 99 out of 100 times starts right and draws left. So what you are saying is if I pull hook it and aim right it is now a draw. Think not. It is still a pull hook. If you think a draw is easier to hit than a fade keep thinking that cause every person I talk to who went from a draw to a fade would disagree and I've been around golf for quite a while. Also, interesting why mist tour players are fading it now. Had one guy seem to think it was cause of the new equipment. Really? Yeah right. So this will be my only response. I will keep doing what I have done for 33 years now. I know the results I get and will keep doing it.

Yes, which is a real or true draw NOT a pull hook.

A pull hook is a pull hook regardless of alignment. Something doesn't just magically turn into a draw cause you aim right. Fix the flaw.
