    Jack Nicklaus said this years ago, Keep it Simple. Draw: Same grip, close the clubface, aim right and take your normal swing. Fade: Same grip, open the clubface, aim left and take your normal swing. You need to get the feel of how much you open or close the clubface and how much you should aim Left or Right to find the consistency of your ball flight.

    It baffles me how many people don't understand that the ball will generally start where the club face aims at impact. The club face has to be OPEN TO TARGET but CLOSED TO PATH for a draw to start right of target and draw back to it. Read it 3 times, let it sink in, that includes you Martin. He had Blaire's club face closed to target and to path causing a low hook at first. This will happen every time until your body starts making compensations.

    Except, as I've come to find out after 50+ years playing, that this is wrong. It will produce a draw but the ball will start at the target (where the club face is pointing) and then turn and will miss the target left. This was happening to Blair on the screen. If you want the ball to start right of target and come back to it, the club face needs to be aiming right but inside the club path.

    I have no problems drawing a ball if my target is left of my setup. When the target is on the right side of me at address I can’t depend on executing the draw. If am on a tee box, when I attempt a draw, I am mostly aiming down the right side of the fairway….which obviously causes lots of problems for me. I can try putting the club more in my fingers, I understand the concept. But I really think it is an alignment issue or a commitment to the shot.

    I'm a very inexperienced self taught golfer and intuitively found a similar trick for draw and fade shots.... if I set up with ball further toward front foot than I normally would so I contact ball later in swing it draws (hooks). If I move it back so I strike it a tad earlier that I usually would it fades (slices). Essentially intentionally hooking or slicing the shot - but if you set up to do it intentionally you can compensate by setting up aiming the opposite direction you intend to move the ball. I think this is essentially the same principle - but moving the ball forward / back in conjunction with aiming away from the direction you want to move ball is what works for me

  • @edcohen1980

    @edcohen1980

    I can also set up with ball back / forward to hit up or down on a shot without slicing or hooking it if I want to. Its just easier and more natural to me to dynamically open or close face during contact if you set up with ball forward or back intending to hit a slicing or hooking shot and you ca just feel it better than trying to do same from a neutral setup

    I find hitting a draw is pretty much the same as a straight shot as far as my setup goes. The difference occurs in the finish. The hands high in the finish for straight and the hands lower and more around the body for a draw. A neutral left hand is key in both and the club face square to the backswing path for both. It seems easier to hit the draw than the straight shot. For the fade I just open the club face slightly and hold on tighter with the left hand not letting it release.

  • @jimbeaver27

  • @Franz9955
    @Franz99553 жыл бұрын

    Probably works but very complicated. Just set up your feet aligned with your target line, place ball a fraction back of the the centre point of your stance, align your knees, hips and shoulders to the just right of your target line (so you are facing the ball in effect) and just swing naturally. A fade you just placed the ball just ahead of the centre point.

    I recall that Lee Trevino once said " You can talk to a fade but a draw won't listen." Still think you are better off sacrificing a bit of distance with a fade, if it means playing the next shot from the fairway.I also think you should try and use a shape for your shots, rather than trying to hit it straight down the middle,as it increases the target.

    My problem with the technique shown here is if I regrip with the closed face at address, I can feel the club face is still closed at the top of the backswing. It really throws off my release, and I usually snap hook into the trees. I find if I focus on an inside to out swing, and fully release the club, I get a draw most of the time. 12 handicap so take it for what it's worth :)

    I don't fiddle with the grip just aim right of target and lead the toe of the club in on impact this promotes "feel" for the shot shape, the more feel you have the more control you have of the club head, fade is left of target toe lagging creating the shape you require.

    If I close the club face to where I want it to end up.. it starts where I want it to end up and goes left.. left going left . I finally found a swing for a push draw that works for me. Aim "slightly" right of Target and closed stance. Club face slightly open with a lag shaft lean at address. Inside out swing and it's a perfect mid launch flight that starts right with low draw spin. Max distance with control. I only close the club face at address if I wanna hit a low stinger fade or butter cut.

    Hopefully you have learned this by now but, just in case, the goal in changing your alignment is to maintain the same swing path, since changing the swing path is far more difficult for the average golfer. Hell, even pros like Tiger adjust their setup for shapes instead of their swing path. Nicklaus keeps it simple as well by telling you to always aim your club face at the target but open your stance for a fade and close it for a draw. Once you get it down, the setup adjustment makes them quite easy to not just hit, but to go from one shape to the other. When trying to change just your swing path, you run into consistency issues and can do considerable damage to your swing, mentally and from a muscle memory perspective, than it is worth.

    I too have more success hitting a draw by changing swing path. It’s a simple swing thought for me…once I turn, keep the left shoulder back and swing under. The result is a beautiful high draw. The funny thing is though, I absolutely setup up for a cut shot. I have always been a natural fader of the ball. Feels right at home to setup a little open and cut it. Draws were a in impossibility for me until I started keeping that shoulder back which totally redirects the club out to in.

    Every good plus handicap player knows that the real secret of hitting a draw (as opposed to an outright hook) is to be sure to keep your head behind/back (away from the target) the ball. This is the only way to keep the swing going inside to out and not across the ball left. Anything less will result in a duck hook. On tee shots to "ride" a right to left wind with a high draw, teeing the ball very high also helps but it is critical that the head stays back behind the ball. Remember, the ball ALWAYS starts out on a path as to where the club tracks through the ball (assuming a square face). Staying back with your head is how you get that inside-to-out swing which is required for a draw alone (not a hook).

    If you get your hips out of the way early it feel like a fade , but creates a space for the arms to come from the inside , it works for me too

    @@fradaja what do you mean by "getting the hips out of the way"? Does this mean in the Downswing you are first turning both your hips so they are facing the target before your chest & shoulders (ie. do the shoulders remain pretty square to target line at impact whilst hips are turning through to the target). Or does this phrase mean moving your hips laterally first to get them "out of the way"??.

    @@mplunky1 I mean the hips create room by always being in front of the arms , it’s pretty difficult create an inside to out with the hips and arms synced , tiger talks about keeping the arms in front I believe that’s how he hits a fade .

    Just like I've found, a famous golf instructor who gives 1000's of hours of lessons and countless drills to students still can't consistently draw the ball after 40+ years. Here's a tip: Many golf instructors are not that good themselves, but a few are. Don't believe me? Pay for a lesson auditioning THEM to demonstrate their skills on a set of shots, if they are even willing to (most won't), and you may be shocked at how poorly they perform. I've watched really terrible "instructors" rake in $80-100/hr not helping their students at all after literally months of lessons. Buyer beware!

    Shouldn't the face be facing the direction you want it started? YOu had it pointing left of center. Seems the clubface should be aligned on the line you want the ball to start, and the body (path) aligned right of that.
