    That is a cool trick for sure, here’s my take on how you’re able to travel upwind… the buildings do compress the wind and the air may be providing some lift as it travels up and over the building, and while it might “bend” as you say, I think that your weight against the kite is causing the kite to overfly onto the upwind side, like it tends to do during a normal high jump and that is why you’re able to travel upwind into the ocean.

  • @DamienLeroyYouTube

    Yea wow heavy topic! I understand the mountain air... First I would say know your conditions, so you try not to put yourself in those scenarios but I understand it happening unexpected in the mountains. I know in the mountains first hand. I would say always just keep that kite flying above your head as that is your only source of soft landing so keep moving it back and forth to keep it above your head! You will have to ride it to the ground as all those unexpected up drafts are unknown so just keep flying the kite. My thoughts...

    So far, at the places I've been kiting, this is most likely to be an issue when I'm trying to land my kite on a narrow beach with a dune behind it. But the wind is usually cross-onshore, so it's not the full effect (and the dunes are smaller than in this video).

  • @DamienLeroyYouTube

    @DamienLeroyYouTube

    Real genuine question - Let's say that with really really careful 100% consideration and thought, albeit being a true beginner and one that still wants to catch long hang air time (because that's what my goal is), what would be ideal gear and price range for a beginner that wants that specific experience?

    Kiteboarding should be done on the water. It is a water sport. You risk death or serious injury to yourself and the public when clowning around on the beach. It is irrelevant how "safe" or professional you label yourself - accidents can happen to anyone.

  • @kitesurferpeter
    @kitesurferpeter3 жыл бұрын

    Very irresponsible. You say DO NOT TRY but then explain how to try it. Hang gliders and paragliders refer to the effect as ridge lift, but they fly facing forwards, not backwards. You forgot to mention rotor - downdraft behind the ridge - which can dump you down hard resulting in death or serious injury. Then there is proximity to buildings, trees etc.

    I know you say, "don't do this", but the title of the video is "how to hang forever". I promise I'm not trying to be negative, but I think the risk is to people who haven't kited long enough to really understand the danger. Beginners probably haven't experienced or seen many kitemares, so just saying "don't try this" might not be enough. You aren't specific about what happens if your kite gets too low, equipment fails, or they catch the updraft and pull their safety because they get scared. Beginners are often kiting onshore wind. If they see the video, nothing stops them from trying it next time they pump up for onshore winds.

    Darwinian theory says that if someone is daft enough to try this without sufficient experience, despite all the warnings, then... It’s as dangerous as getting a toe when on a kite. As Damo points out, there is no redundancy in a kite - one line breaks and you’re coming down fast. Plus, paragliding (even with all its redundancy) is still exceptionally dangerous- I say that, as I used to do it myself! I would suggest that at least if people understand the theory, they are marginally less likely to kill or injure themselves…

    Marvin, You are right and I new I could never be right with the video like this. I made it for the knowledge as for years everyone asks how it is done. I cannot stop people from trying but I for sure do not recommend it and that is my best advise... A video like this yes you really can't win..... All I can say is go take paragliding lessons if interested. Even that is dangerous....

    I consider myself as a beginner and I was tought beginners shouldn't go out kiting at on-shore (or off-shore) conditions, better on side- or side-on-shore! I wouldn't dare to try s.th. like this even though it looks so cool when a pro rider like Damian does it w/ perfection. However the video does not lure me into a trial ;-) Falling 2+ meters on the ground or hitting an obstacle at the beach does not sound like fun, at least to me! Btw. in my view, Damian stresses very often that's not recommended that in the end, the real how-to comes a bit short ( kite control, body posture, bar positioning/movement etc. ... exit plan) .. or did I miss that?

    @@DamienLeroyKZread I love the technical explanation and I love your video and the channel. I know most people will never try it. I just worry for the guy who had a successful lesson, but thinks he's better than he is because he never had even had to do a walk of shame. I meet beginners who overestimate their skills pretty often. I think we can all agree that injuries are bad for the sport. I would have loved for you to say specifically what bad things could happen, because I'm sure I don't even know all of possibilities.
