How to Handle Losing a Job

Ғылым және технология

Does Adam have any advice for how to stay positive when you lose a job? How should one go about pricing items you're selling? Having worked at ILM and made a replica prototype of the Thermal Detonator for Master Replicas, does Adam know how the original was weathered? In this live stream excerpt, Adam answers these questions from Tested members Edwin Bear, Angelic Nephilim and Martin Sivertsen, whom we thank for their support! I've been watching you since I was a little kid, and I'm almost 40 now... I've gone from being a high school drop out, and never got my G.E.D.... To an aero space machinist and I still don't have a high school diploma. Your inspiration has always driven me to new heights, thank you for being an amazing person and instructor. I just started a new job. I was doing timed internal splines/ squares/hex's, to 5 axis live tooling... and I can honestly say it was all due to the inspirations you have put forth in my head. Thank you sir!

My older brother was freelance for about 10years. He told me a while ago that the first thing he did was build up a really big "no job" fund. Beans and rice, no new buys etc I til he had about a year ahead in savings. Said it has taken that fear out of his mentality completely. He's always got a backstop now and it lets him curate the jobs he take a instead of having to be desperate. He said he put 20% aside for the first couple years and then 10% from then on.

Easy - don't do work that won't support you 100%. If you have a 9-5, stick with it and do the freelance on the side. The freelance shouldn't be a job but a hobby that makes you beer money at this stage. Save as much cash as you can - when your freelance work starts to be too much for nights and weekends, drop one day of work. Keep going and use your savings to supplement, dropping days as needed. Use your annual leave days to give you extra room to work. When you have the freelance income equal or greater to the salaried work, then you can stop your 9-5. Be ready to use your savings to supplement your freelance payments both in general and during dry periods. Use side hustles to put more money in the bank. If there's a dry period, pick up a casual job until the work picks up again.

Yep - always have a back up fund. I've just been made redundant but I managed over 2 years to get the fund in place in case the worst happened. And then it happened. My view is no one's going to look after me except myself. I also get up usual time, try different things every few weeks (for example, choose a different places to job hunt other than the home - a cafe for a while, the library) - stay active and walk a lot too. Good luck 👍🏼

My mom said basically the same thing when I was first without work. When you don't have a job, finding a job is your full time job. Getting up and out at the same hours as your field works. Spending your 8+ hour day finding places to apply for and applying (to be clear - job ads in the evening, putting in resumes to places that would keep it on file in the day). I would also add - volunteer. Some place with a known name is best. It's hard to get employers to look at an application with a gap in employment. A job in your field is best, a job not in your field is ok, and volunteer work is better than a period of nothing. And if your field has a hobby equivalent, do that and make a portfolio of your hobby work online that you can link to. And practice interviews with family so you can stay calm when you're nervous in an interview and give clear answers. Every time I am on an interview panel, I try to help the candidates who stumble to give us something in their favor because I know good candidates just get nervous, but not many do that. It's a huge advantage to be able to answer interview questions clearly, and you absolutely can practice that. And most importantly, pray. I know some people aren't religious, and praying insincerely doesn't do you any good, but for those with faith, that is the anchor that will get you through. For the nonreligious, I don't know what works for you. Definitely don't go it alone, though, and absolutely do not hide it from your family. Joblessness takes a massive toll on your mental health and you need support.

  • @Darticus42

    @Darticus42

    Жыл бұрын

@Merennulli very wise and respectful answer, on the last bit in particular. Religious or not, we all need our support systems, our foundational driving forces, our beliefs in who we are and who (+ what) helps us keep going through hard times. Sometimes that's best met from a close family member or friend, belief in a higher being / deity, or maybe from a part of us deep inside ourselves that we forgot was there. Beliefs on what sense of goodness ultimately drives that might differ. But either way, we shouldn't forget that we're never alone, and in a very real sense all of these beliefs and experiences and relationships with others can all come together to support us through hard times. Shouldn't pretend like everything's okay and that you never need help or support, instead you [generic] should know when and how to reach out when it's inevitably needed. I'm too young to have experienced joblessness for myself, so in some ways i can only imagine + extrapolate. But that very much does seem like a common thread for similar experiences of going through hard times.

as a nurse of 10+ years, losing my job multiple times to layoffs, closings, I've learned to have a routine as well, put our ego aside and take up jobs we wouldn't normally give attention, but search for better positions, use your discontent as motivation to maintain your energy. Freelance work is also a life saver, even us nurses can freelance, and madly agree with Mr. Savage, routine is a must, it's way too easy to fall down the path of discouraging emotions.

Many people equate their job with who they actually are as people. Losing a job therefore threatens to destabilize who a person thinks they are, so I would add the first thing to do is seperate yourself from what you do, as much as you can. Losing a job doesn't mean YOU lose. It's just a job. There will be others. And for the Etsy question, it is important to remember asking price has nothing to do with what people will actually pay for the item. Or for ebay, listing price has nothing to do with actual sold prices. The old adage for this is "something is worth what someone is willing to pay" and it doesn't matter if your Etsy item took a month and cost you a million dollars to make, if nobody will pay that price. So knowing what the market will bear is vital. Again, not LIST prices. Actual sale prices. That's a number you must know in order to know if it even makes sense to do a product.

When you lose a job it is always yourself that you have to look at to stay positive. You have to tell your self it is fine lets go and see what else is out there. Yes it is sad that the job you did for x number of years and you did well is gone but you have to take care of yourself and see what can help you move on to the next thing. Dont be afraid to ask for help or learn something new.

To the etsy question, I am a wood turner who sells bowls/pens/openers etc on etsy and local markets. I completely agree with what Adam says about knowing you market and competition. At my last local market I realized I had my market all wrong, people are not spending 100+ dollars on a big salad bowl but they are spending 40-60 dollars on a multi purpose utility bowl. Then I worked back from there based on material costs and time to get the revenue I wanted to determine what materials, size, time for each bowl.

Nowhere near my usual wage, but it paid the bills. Honestly covering the bills gives headspace, easier said than done.

I feel sorry for folks who have never lost a job or had to change careers. It's disheartening, however it has always been an opportunity for growth and change. The biggest thing Ive found is sometimes it is you who will create a job or opportunity while you are doing something different. The main key is to not give up or give into despair while your life is changing.

The hardest thing about losing a job is getting into the right headspace. Losing a job is not a personal insult or a comment on you as a person. It's usually just a business decision. You are not your job, a job is just part of what you do. And it's not the most important part, even. I've lost a few jobs in my life, and every one has been hard. But every time i lost a job, i got better as a person. And usually scored a better job as a result. It can be really easy to just get into a rut, instead of making the most of your time. Because going to the same job day after day can get very comfortable, but it isn't necessarily the best bet for your personal growth. In short, losing a job is something that happens. It's not the end of the world. Pick yourself up, dust off, and carry on!

When you're in the Etsy space, surrounded by people just like you who really want to make stuff they love and get paid fairly, it really is OK to ask directly. "Hey, I adore what you do, and I'm trying to break into kinda the same space. Like, doing what you do with Marvel, only with more Dr Who stuff. Can I ask how you do your cost-benefit stuff with that amazing Iron Man thing you do? I'm so stumped, I try to make stuff and I don't see how to charge anything other than insanity for it. Anyway, I know I sound like I'm dumb and begging, but I just thought your stuff was so awesome I'd give it a go and ask." Revise to your voice, but do it. They're just like you. You'll meet them at the next con, and you'll rave about their stitching, and they'll be like, "OMG, how the F did you get that bit of rubber to lie like that??" And then you're not-really-competing pals in the same approximate maker-product-space, and you learn more and more. ASK ASK ASK!!!

I would argue you should embrace some negativity. Let yourself feel. Take a long weekend to mope. And then add some ritual to mourn the loss of let the anger out. Trying to stay positive and jump right in to sales or job hunting without letting yourself feel the hurt is a recipe for burnout. If you didn’t mourn the loss, or release the anger, every failure along the search will feel worse. Also you need to look at what mistakes you made if any and commit to work on those.

The solution to finance in making and freelancing is to stop seeing it as a replacement for a salary, or as a quick buck, or as a quick fix. I know many people that quit their 9-5s to freelance and got surprised when they didn't have any money. You need to introduce it slowly, build it up while slowly reducing your salaried work, and only when you have enough savings and work that you can go a year without any work, will you have enough money to survive two years and still have a year left. You can't buy a camera, decide you're a freelancer, quit your job and just do photography, and expect to come out with a profit.

My first commission is to make a 2 gallon casserole. One, my claybody is not formulated for cooking directly over heat, and will probably break on the first use. Two, finishing the job will put me hundreds of dollars into the red, just in shipping alone. Should I be sad about losing a crappy commission that's been a nightmare? I should be, but I honestly don't care. The point of what we do in this world is to make money, not lose it. Fundamentally losing money on a deal, simply because Americans are too stupid to understand what goes into making goods, is soul crushing. I think it truly is impossible to succeed as a ceramic artist in the US without some kind of financial support like a teaching job, or working for a nonprofit. Americans only want cheap ceramics and don't care about the fact most potters survive on less than $10k a year. A established potter might bring in $50k a year, but when your overhead is $40k a year, it's kind of like, "Why bother?" What did I learn? Don't take commissions unless you are a rapacious sociopath when you set your price. If it isn't worth the time and effort, again, why bother? Would you want to constantly beg for commissions just to scrape by on less than minimum wage? Eugenics via capitalism sure is fun. At some point rich Boomers need to have a reality check, and expecting the youth of your country to be able to survive on peanuts, and constantly running everything in the red isn't the solution. If you want nice things in this world, you have to pay for them. I see the entire system as a fucked nightmare.

I've had over 90 jobs in 25+ years of working. CNA, machine operator(cnc), forklift driver, dock worker, pizza maker, pizza delivery, shrink wrapper in a chocolate factory, door to door vacuum sales, vacuum repair, landscaping, shipping/receiving, production work I am fast as hell at(muscle memory helps a lot there), interior/exterior house painter, supermarket stock, dish dogger, white glove busboy/waiter for the Buffalo Country Club, warehouse picker, had 3 jobs at once, gone through 3 jobs in a week, fired on a Friday and have a new job and at work on the following Monday, had an employer ecstatic that I had so many jobs because that meant they didn't have to spend any extra money to train me, temp agency sent me to a warehouse where the boss showed me the warehouse when he got a call. Excused himself, said he'd be back. Well after a while I get bored and start cleaning. Put all the tools away, swept and just kept busy. 2 hours later he comes back to say he's gonna be even longer so he says "Why don't you grab a broom and sweep?" I say "Already done." Look of surprise and then says "Why don't you collect all the tools and put them away?" I say "Already done'" Even bigger look of surprise and then he says "Ok , well then I'll leave you to it." and away he went. Back in my day we had to fill out a piece of paper called an "Application". Nothing to do with phones. So anyway my trick was to take that app home, fill it out and then take it back. Ask to see the manager but don't say why. Now you hand the manager the app and now he has a face to go with the name and app. Now he starts looking through the apps and yours comes up. He thinks"I remember this guy." and puts your app in the pile to call back. I didn't get 90+ jobs without a few tricks.

Adam! Please stop contributing to the abuse/misuse of the word "notoriety". Has everyone gone and bonked their collective heads? It seems everyone and their mothers have been using this word incorrectly of late. To use one of your examples, a creator would gain notoriety, say, if a compound used in the $100,000 gold leaf helmet wings they created caused the wearers to sprout a literal third eye in their foreheads. One that needs glasses.
