How to Hack a Car: Phreaked Out (Episode 2)

Ғылым және технология

In this episode of "Phreaked Out," we met some of the top security researchers at the center of the car hacking world. The goal isn't to make people crash: They highlight security holes in order to highlight flaws in car technology, intended to pressure auto manufacturers to be a few steps ahead of their friendly foes.
Information security researcher Mathew Solnik gave us a first-hand demonstration on how to wirelessly send commands to the car and remotely tell it what to do. With a little over a grand and about a month of work, Solnik found time outside of his full-time job to reverse-engineer a car's computer system to make it ready for a takeover.
From his laptop, he was able to manipulate the car's engine, brakes and security systems by wirelessly tapping into the Controller Area Network, or CAN bus, network. Without getting too deep into the details-both for legal reasons and due to my own training-wheel knowledge of such things-he was able to do so by implementing some off-the-shelf chips, a third party telematic control unit, a GSM-powered wireless transmitter/receiver setup, and a significant amount of know-how he's accrued over the years.
The reason for such additional hardware was to make our older, mid-sized sedan function like a newer-and arguably more vulnerable-stock vehicle, which these days often come with data connections. (We would have loved to tinker with the latest, most connected car on the market, but since we were on a shoestring budget and it's incredibly hard to find a friend who's willing to lend their car for a hacking experiment, our pickings were slim.)
With that said, a car whose network system is connected to a cloud server and accessible by Bluetooth, cell networks, or wi-fi is potentially vulnerable to intrusion.

I've installed car electronics for 15 years. And some of this stuff can be done. As far as the steering and brakes go, they can only be controlled remotely if your car is equipped with electronic steering assist, and/or automatic braking system. But as far as the other functions such as start/stop the engine, lock/unlock doors, lights on/off, etc. Most cars since 1995 have been equipped with an ECU (engine control unit) and a BCM (Body Control Module) which are central brain units that control the commands of each switch or button in your vehicle. Easily plugging a device into the obd II connector and having the right software, it is possible to remotely take over someone's car without them ever suspecting anything.

buying an older car without a canbus/ good luck with that, buying a car and have a "firewall" and antitamper on the canbus.. good luck with that. You know computers right? I asume you are using a computer regularly, Apple, Windows or Linux, doesnt matter, wichever OS, you need protection on it. same goes for your car, old or new, we gonna need protection. And the problem you have with older cars, emissions, local goverments or even national goverments are gonna push everyone towards cleaner, saver cars... so whatever you wanna do, somehow someday you be driving a vehicle, with a computer, and some kind of communications bus in it, that might expose some kind of wireless coms... and hackers can hack it, someone could left a bug in, or somehow a worm, will attack that computer.... Just get to understand these risks, buy whatever car you want, just make sure you undersdtand its basic functions and securtity and update if nececairy. maybe hack the canbus yourself, be there, when it happens, track it, log it. build protections or even beat the hacker at his own game ;). we dont want to drive to work with a horse and carriage anymore now do we? check hackaday.com for awesome hacks, and maybe tricks for protecting yourself.

anything is possible, anything, not saying that it was hacked but it seems when people can not find a reason why this would be done they conclude it was not a hack. just because you have no idea is no reason to rule it out. also the fact that they were pro drivers who raced gave some the idea they were out driving way to fast. well i know because i have spent sum serious time with cart, f1 & irl drivers that off the track they really do not behave like that on a street. i could be totally wrong this time & i knew nobody involved personally but knowing there racing background i am more inclined to think they were well in control & at safe speeds. racers spend a good deal of time at the track & it's just not the same on a public street so to a racer driving really fast off a track is not a thrill. just my 2 cents & i could be totally wrong but i don't think so

exactly. "the vehicle shown is modified with third-party hardware for demo purposes" well how else would they even connect to a car wirelessly if they dont install a custom hardware on it? are they counting that there are retarded car manufacturers so using this add on motherboard they will provide their already prepared "miracle" hardware and software that can "protect" a car from being hacked for a silly price? first of all i am not familiar with the recent car systems but why would a car need a cellular network installed in it in the first place? a normal car system have computer that reads the status of the sensors installed and controls the system accordingly, there is nothing that you can connect to directly on that computer except on the jack that is installed for that purpose. a specialized car auto mechanic can do all this things shown on the video but not remotely without connecting a cable to the car. 7:54 obviously a cable going from the laptop to the car... "GSM networks, everything is cellular nowadays" WTF, why would a car have GSM installed in it? so now what? are they hoping to persuade the car manufacturers to buy the lame McAfee antivirus and security for their cars? the security software that cant even deal with simple PC viruses and hacks? Ubisoft sponsors so big campaign to promote their game that had the release date prolonged for so long, there is not a single recent video on KZread that doesnt talk about it, i bet it will be rubbish and a big failure. the same campaign they launched for assassins creed and it was a failure too.

Well my car has a 3g connection, it is not for me to use, but for the car to send status to manufacturer website of the car, and that certainly could be hacked. It also allows me to remote start my car, unlock the doors lock the doors and locate the car. But I canceled the service and removed the antenna since I have a manual car, the remote start does not work and it isn't worth $100 a year to be able to unlock my car from my phone. But even if it was hacked and they turned off my car, I can still steer and brake, so there would be no point. And the part where they say that they can blow the engine up, it requires a restart to flash the ecu, and most cars the map file that the ecu access to control the engine cannot be manipulated because it is encrypted. And even then a device would have to be installed on the OBD port allowing remote access, since programming is physically separated from anything but the ecu and the OBD2 port.

***** There is potential to override the breaking and steering systems. New ESP equipped cars have ECU control over breaks in each wheel separately. One of my cars has an electric power steering that is also connected to the ECU. There is no full disconnect between the mechanical systems and the things that control them, but it would be possible to lock one wheel to alter the path of the car, or make the car accelerate. From my knowledge, it's not possible to control the steering directly, but again, the pump might be switched off. My opinion is that remotely steering the car is BS, but having control over those systems might make the car accelerate and crash. The whole thing is not new. Delphi introduced an OBDII remote controller for the car, that can actually do a lot of stuff. Those guys are not pioneers, the whole thing is hyped to the max.

You're right. This method requires physical access to one of the modules inside the car. As far as I know, there isn't wireless access to the CAN bus directly. In this example the "hacker" had installed a custom gsm module. He could as easily used a simple elm327 with Bluetooth and get the same result. Still, you need access to the inside of the car.

@@sheeshulex elm327 gives you Bluetooth access to the CAN bus for as little as $10. You need physical access to the OBD port inside the car though. In theory you could modify the elm327 and tap into other CAN bus modules also.

Another thing that I was doubtful of (in addition to my previous comment that you can NOT remotely hack into the car unless someone first broke into the car and added their own physical receiver device) was that a hacker can NOT completely disable the brakes entirely to prevent you from being able to stop. Most cars have HYDRAULIC brakes with a physical connection between the brake pedal and the brakes. When you push on the brake pedal, it pushes on a master cylinder piston that pushes fluid into the brake caliper which squeezes the brake to make the wheel stop. There's nothing computer or electronic about that to be avble to prevent it from happening. Hack into and automatically APPLY the brake (thru stability control or parking brake)? Sure. Disable to booster? Probably. But completely stop the brakes from working? No, it's a bunch of metal and rubber pieces pushing fluid around, nothing you can do to stop that electronically.

Even then it's really only the expensive cars that are drive by wire, the I've had to move cars that aren't not that old ('90-'95), and the hand brake, regular brakes and steering still work, though takes more effort to get them to respond with with the power off but I can still get them to. Developing hardware for CAN communication with a car isn't focused on stealing a car. You'd have to sniff or know what messages do what, then create those messages to do something on the car. About the easiest thing to do is turn something off. Second is unlocking doors and starting up. Spoofing/overriding continuous messages would be a bit more difficult. Unintended acceleration or braking would require temporary disabling of the controller sending those signals and simultaneously sending those messages continuously to make it happen. One-line messages like unlocking doors and turning the car on/off is about the extent of this. Remote tracking would require an extra GPS unit hooked up to the arduino and that information sent over GPRS (unless, there is GPS information created by the car and communicated over can). There is absolutely no way someone can walk by your car and 'hack' it to unlock with what is shown in this video. It would take access to a can port (OBD II port), hardware, a power source (OBD port?), and a knowledge of the CAN messages of the specific car.

Im a big classic car man myself, but a classic cars "toughness" is the reason you're more likely to die. No crumple zones, no airbags, only lap belts... thats not including the speculative stuff like the physics of the lack of bolstering, b pillar strength, etc. I will agree to this though, if you get in a small fender bender - you aren't out of THOUSANDS and are more likely to drive away. But in the hypothetical above: The person in the runaway car has a better chance of survival.

William O'Leary not entirely true... people survived more wrecks in classic cars they they do in these thin sheet metal cars of today... that is why deaths were reported less in wrecks...the person in the smaller care usually died while the driver of the tank lived.

what if you put one of those chips in your own car so no one else can put one of there's on or if they do then you can still control your car from your computer. would that help matters?

  • @bmw5002
    @bmw50029 жыл бұрын

What a load of crap. The car was retrofitted most likely with a custom setup such as an arduino, tied to a GSM board, and using a can bus interface chip. The wires for the body control can bus would need to be fished out of a door panel or under the carpet to be tapped. And it's highly likely that starting or stopping the engine from the body control can bus is impossible. Most modern cars maintain a separate bus for engine control and other systems essential for safe operation of the car. Even if that bus was tapped, I highly doubt it was done on this car. I'm betting that this car was also retrofitted with a remote start module which ties into the starter and ignition wires. Then control of that module was also passed off to the arduino or other retrofitted remote control system. If the car has a standard turn to start key, and if you can release the key at any time before the car is started and it stops cranking, it's very likely that the starter is not computer controlled. On newer cars with push to start, it may be possible to manipulate that function over the can bus. In a nutshell, this car has been highly modified to allow this demonstration. The chances of someone being able to hack a car wirelessly over something like the in-car bluetooth audio is highly, highly unlikely. The maker of this video did a very poor job in explaining exactly how much modifications needed to be done to accomplish this. The video spreads FUD amongst people who don't know enough to understand how something like this is accomplished. This video is quite a load of rubbish and should frankly be removed for being inaccurate and sloppy.

He said it was retrofitted with a doover from a newer model car, which in a nutshell is saying the model they had wasn't capable so they shoved a controller into that car from a newer model that enabled the "hacking" to take place, essentially verifying everything you said. If you look closely, yes there is an arduino in the "CHT" Car Hacking Tool.

Wankel Motor I do not think that you need to get into car to add this. You can connect from under-neath. I worked for an agency that made tracking devices for cars to track where you go. Courts ruled that if the tracking device uses the electricity of the car (you wire it to car's electrical system) it's not illegal. If it battery powered it is illegal. I believe that this silly law is so the government and car maker can know that the device is on the car. Battery powered will make it harder for government and maker to discover.

d smith I've never come across the CAN BUS when working outside of a vehicle. Most cars store their engine computer inside the passenger compartment, the wire harness that connects to it branches out to hundreds of sensors but without access to the computer directly I don't see how you could possibly gain access without breaking in.

since car intern communication is not fully standardized you have to analyze it ( im not a specialist for canbus but ive worked with it briefly ). so you'd first get that information which will be hard since this is usually company secret and then you would have to know the cars systems well enough to get access to read/write on the canbus to do the things he did. Still this is a lot of work where you need highly qualified people and if the car manufacturers up their security it should be even more difficult than it is now. (i just hate that they got macafee in this video since their software is appaling)

***** The FAA was controlling all commercial aircraft long before 911. It used to be called fly by wire in the 80's-90's. Pilots only land and take off generally. When evasive maneuvers are needed pilots will then take control, but most of the flight is controlled by the FAA and has been for over 20 years.
