    This is why i’m very skeptical when it comes to driverless cars. What if in the future, a psychotic hacker manages to hack and take control of many cars? There’s nothing stopping him.

  • @VestigialHead

    @VestigialHead

    5 жыл бұрын

    +LA Knight The simple solution is to not have critical controls connected to the internet or wifi. Then if a hacker gains control of a driverless car there is no horrible consequences. The most critical system that should be wifi controllable is a slowdown to a stop system. This would not be rapid braking and would cause the vehicle to pulloff the road onto a shoulder. So the worst a hacker could do would be to make people be late to their appointments.

  • @lupvirga

    @lupvirga

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@VestigialHead it wouldn't matter, you need to make sure to keep the AI up to date with the most modern Roads and safty regulations, and, sense it's a computer that needs to drive it, it's vulnerable to VIRUSES, not just hacks.

  • @VestigialHead

    @VestigialHead

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@lupvirga Why would it not matter? If no critical controls are connected to the computer system then a virus cannot cause death and destruction. Do not connect the steering to the control module. Do not add a kill switch to the control module. Do not connect the braking etc etc. So a virus could then only mess with things that will not cause the vehicle to crash.

    There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to connect a car's internal digital management system with the digital infotainment system. The few pennies saved create a tremendous hazard as well as easy pickings for criminals and terrorists. The only safe and secure method of building a car's on board digital management system is by separating and isolating it completely from all other functions while at the same time giving the driver the final say, without exception. This means full mechanical connections to basic functions such as brakes, throttle, steering, wipers, lights, horn, etcetera must be maintained. To knowingly place an easily hack-able computer in charge of basic functions is pure stupidity on the part of the engineers at the automotive companies. The only safe way to design the basic system management computer (engine, brakes, steering, etc.) is to place each function on a separate chip which can only be erased with a UV light through an on chip window as has been done in past. A standard connection can be used to reprogram the chips but not without removing the computer. This will make things nearly impossible for all but the most determined criminals. There should never be a direct radio link to the basic mechanical functions in a car. Sometimes, the old way is best.

    I have 3 cars, the newest is a 1977. I will not drive a computer controlled car. This is one of the reasons why. This may seem like fun and games, but the fact is, cops and any government agency could stop your car remotely. While this involved a Chrysler product, GM has been leading the way with it's On Star system, which is standard in all their vehicles. Fortunately the On Star system can still be removed from the vehicle without disabling the vehicle by someone with the necessary skills. A computer savvy friend of mine has done this to over 200 GM vehicles. It is important that no vehicle be hackable or be capable of being remotely controlled in any way. The driver must be in full control. A vehicle must not be trackable either. That would allow the government to be able to keep track of where the vehicle has been, when, and for how long.

    Probably, but fortunately not in my lifetime. What will we do when computers and robots take over everything. Reminds me of a line from Star Trek TOS, from an episode called "The Ultimate Computer" Kirk remarked that " There are things men must to do to remain men, your computer would take that away" Makes sense to me. We humans were designed to do things for ourselves. If that ever ends, life will be meaningless.

    Hopefully this will raise awareness at the potential risks that all these new in-vehicle technologies can bring, especially when manufacturers don't do a good enough job with securing all these "smart" features in vehicles. Heck, the street I live on has already been hit by thieves exploiting vulnerabilities in the keyless proximity systems many new vehicles have. The type that only requires you to carry the fob in your pocket to unlock the doors and push a button to start the car. They went down the street popping one vehicle after another, and even locked the vehicles after they were done stealing whatever valuables they could find inside. Vehicles equipped with the traditional keyfobs (where you need to press a button on the fob to unlock the doors, and have a mechanical ignition lock to start the car) were not broken into. Only the new vehicles with this fancy keyless technology. So while a lot of these new in-car technologies can add a lot of convenience, as well as accident avoidance and other advanced features, they can also present a significant cyber-security risk if not implemented in a manner that values security above all else. For this reason, I will not be purchasing a newer vehicle with such features until I can be confident that they have effectively resolved and prevented such hacks. I really don't need my vehicle to be connected to a network, nor do I find having the physically stick a key in a lock to be much of an inconvenience. Sometimes it's better to keep things simple.

    My brother is a tec with Chrysler he said they have a program that does that. He can logg in and take control of any of there vehicles but he actually has the program and logg in credentials. All he needs is the vin number basically.

    Saw this coming a mile away. To think that vehicles like these are going to be the norm scares the shit out of me. The implications are insane. What happens if you're dropping your kid off at school and, out of nowhere, someone takes control and just slams the gas and flattens like 30 elementary kids? You're behind the wheel. Welcome to the world of prison.
