I'm from Northern Ireland and I forgive you my friend. Thanks for your videos. I am enjoying them very much. I'm a 70 year old lady who has grown stuff most of my life but can't do it any more as I need a hip replacement. I hope to do some gardening when I get my health back xx All my love to you and your lovely wife Nancy xx

God bless you dear sister. We pray for your healing and recovery from your hip replacement. We are getting older now too. We are looking harder at more container and vertical gardening as we grow older. Getting down on the ground on our hands and knees is getting very difficult and painful. Peace to you❤️

These potato learning videos of yours this one with your diagrams and I watched another one of yours and you had diagrams are, hands down, the very best I’ve ever seen. I watch a lot of KZread videos and gardening and farming and yours without a doubt have told me the most. You have put so much thought and effort into these videos. I just want to tell you how much I appreciate that. I am learning to garden and will be growing potatoes for the first time this year and your videos have helped me tremendously. For the past several years I have been trying to learn how to grow my own food. I finally moved to a 1.5 acres so I can make a nice big garden and grow some of my own food. So thank you very very much for setting me up for success with these educational videos.

Nothing to forgive! Your teaching is amazing and I thank you. Questions: Do you add any soil amendments such as bone meal when planting? Instead of covering the seed potatoes with 6" of soil, could it be 8" or 10" and therefore raise the green point (which should yield more harvest)? And do you ever feed or spray during the growing cycle? I've got my seed potatoes setting out, waiting for chits. This is my first time growing potatoes. Southern California, zone 10. God bless both of you, and Bing!

I do have a couple questions, if anyone can help: Will potatoes grow in containers attached to a Rain Gutter Grow System, like the type from You Tuber Larry Hall? (kzread.info/dash/bejne/fYOOrc2pqa2ylpM.html) Or would they get too wet? Basically a netpot is cut into the bottom of the growing container, filled with soil and then placed into a common rain gutter. The rain gutter is filled with water, and the water level is kept constant via the attached float valve with a constant supply of water (hose or gravity fed reservoir). Only the netpot is in the water, and the plant is fed via capillary action. Very smart system. Very low maintenance required. Has anyone ever tried sweet potatoes in a rain gutter system? Id love to use Hollis and Nancy's container grow method in conjunction with Larry Hall's rain gutter. Happy growing!

This was one of the best explained videos EVER. I have questions and comments. So, you plant in March and harvest in October? I never knew about determinate or indeterminate so I just cut out the eyes (self chitted) of store bought potatoes as I was cooking and threw them in a bucket of compost covering them up with soil each time. I got lots of small potatoes out of it and even a couple of very large one. I saw a video of a man who planted his potatoes inside plastic bags first and then placed them into a 10" container covering them completely with soil. As time went on, he would pull the bags out, open them to pick the potatoes as they grew without disturbing the rest, then replacing it back into the container. Do you feed your potatoes liquid tomato feed? Thanks again for a great lesson. Are you a Virginia firefighter?

+Linda Casey Hi Linda👋👋👋 I plant when the lows are above 45 degrees with no danger of frost. For my area that will be after April 20th. The taters take 85-110 days until harvest. I add Bone Meal in the container when I plant. I don't need anything after that. I don't feed them any liquid fertilizer because they are typically high in nitrogen. I don't want that because it promotes the leaf growth instead of directing the energy into the roots. The Bone Meal will get the job done. I was the Fire Chaplain for the Newport News Fire Department. I retired from that ministry when Nancy got cancer so I could take care of her. God has healed her and she is doing great after the surgery.🙏🙏

Since the determinant are early and grow below the green line is it possible to add a second layer of seed potato?

+Clay More Yes, just be sure when you cover the second layer of seed potatoes with soil that the first plants are tall enough that they are not buried when you add the second layer. I have seen this done before with success.

forgive me but if the determinate potatoes don't grow past the green line, why plant them like that in containers? would it not just be easier and just as effective to plant them in a shallow container? or more traditionally in the ground?

I see why you would do it with a indeterminate potato, to increase yield. is there another reason to do it that would be beneficial for determinate potatoes?

i did read down and see someone ask the same question but wouldn't just one 4 inch layer of dirt and a generous layer of mulch solve the sunlight problem?

  • @HollisNancysHomestead

+Nathan King Thanks for watching Nathan. I use a twenty gallon container to allow me to plant multiple seed potatoes for a higher yield. I start with at least 6" layer on the bottom, lay in seed potatoes then add at least 6" soil on top of that. I wait until the plants are 8" past the green point and add another 6" soil. When the plants reach above the rim is add 4" more soil and 2" mulch. Sunlight can penetrate deeper than anticipates through the soil that is why I like to add plenty of soil to avoid green potatoes. The twenty gallon container seems to be best for what I want. It is what I am comfortable with. I like how your mind works, good questions👍. I am going to grow some in indeterminate Russet Potatoes next spring. I plan to use a much taller container than the 20 gallon tub.

Hollis & Nancy's Homestead thanks for the quick and helpful reply that really does make a lot of sense. i did a quick lookup on why the greening is so bad, green potatoes are producing a natural pesticide called solanine common in nightshade plants like potatoes. and according to the list of symptoms... it doesn't look fun... better safe then sorry then :). good luck with those russet potatoes. :)

Thank you so very much. These videos of yours are the best instructive vegetable gardening videos I have had theprivilege of watching. I have been 'grubbing in the dirt' since 1974 and loved every minute of it. We haven't grown potatoes for years because we have a longstanding preference for tomatoes, and limited growing space. Half our lot, 65' x 100',is shaded by very tall, mature oaks and maples. We have full sun only on the south side of the property. Late blight and wilt spooks the daylights out of me and so we've avoided spuds. But this year 'the potato bug' is back. Using your bucket method,I'm going to isolate the potatoes as far away from the tomatoes as I can and hope for the best.I had no idea there are, like tomatoes, both determinate and indeterminate potatoes. Both being nightshades, I guess it makes perfect sense. Talk about good timing. What a blessing to have stumbled upon your videos this morning.May I thank you and commend you, especially in this day and age, for your courage to present yourselves on line as a Christianfamily. May we all never lose sight of The Cross and our Lord's sacrifice as a reminder of all that we've been given.Les

I really love the way you explain everything -so clearly and honestly Hollis. No need to ask forgiveness. If you don't mind me asking you a favor though, I live in a tropical zone on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, and it's hard to know when is the right time to plant potatoes here. Maybe if I knew where you were and I could compare your climate to mine I would know? It's late September here, and we have just started getting cool bursts in temperatures. By that I mean in the low 80s during the day, and mid-60s at night. We typically don't even get a frost much less a freeze until the beginning of January. And if we do get a freeze it will only be a short lived hard freeze somewheres between the end of January until mid February. It's been an adjustment for many years because I'm originally from the Northeast, but there is nothing better than four growing seasons and no rocks to counted with in gardening. I can't post the Dickens out of everything and have built up this soil from clay over the years, so maybe the temperatures are the contributing Factor for most of the problems I've had with when to plant root veggies?
