Important for folks to know that the leaves will look droopy when it gets cold. Doesn't mean it's dry! It's just conserving moisture.

We just put 5 of these in front of our garage this afternoon. Spot gets morning sun, and is in shade by 1pm daily in summer. Hoping they thrive there.

@@saricomey889 they did NOT! 4 of the 5 died the first summer. We transplanted the sole survivor to a super wet and shady nook, and it is still alive. It's not very full or beautiful yet, but I am hoping it comes to life as it warms up here.

Hi, Jim. New subscriber. I want to put a Hydrangea beside a Nova Zembla. Besides Pinky Winky and Limelight, what other Hydrangeas would you suggest for zone 5b to go with the NZ Rhodo?

Im in zone 9 in western washington. Planting these under some trees in a very shaded area, next to my back fence. Hoping it can fill that spot out. I'm worried the area is TOO shaded. Hoping for the best.

They can get pretty big. If you want them to stay separated, then more than 5 feet apart. If you are trying to make a screen or hedge 4 feet would be fine.

My Rhody didn’t bloom last summer even though it had buds. They looked like dead buds this spring so I took the buds off. Now i’m learning I probably ruined my flowers for this season? Is that true or will my buds come back this summer or if ever?

I planted Nova Zembla in a flower pot. My place of residence is 5a. But in winter, sometimes the temperature drops to -22°F for one or two days. My question is can I put it outdoors under such conditions? In such a cold climate, the entire flowerpot will freeze into ice, and it will drop as cold as the temperature. Thank you, and look forward to your reply.

Help. The previous owners just let these things go and yeah... they're like 7-8ft tall. Is it too late to prune them down? The tops have started to get tangled in the branches of our cherry tree in the yard.

Thanks lots, I just purchased this rhododendron and now to pick out the perfect spot. When you say to plant it in a mound, I should build up my ground level to take up the size of the rootball ?

  • @JimPutnam

I would dig the hole like you are going to put the whole rootball in the ground and then put a couple of inches of soil back in the hole. That way when you set the plant into the hole it is sitting up some.

Mine leaves are getting yellow and brown too, I think too much sun. I used to have a huge oak tree in front yard , my rhodo was under the tree. tree was removed because was dying, and now received full sun and leaves are getting brown, but grew buds already for next season . So I started watering more often, never water it before . I have this small tree for 6 years and I love it . I'm in zone 7A

I want to grow rhododendrons so bad but i live in zone 7a/7b and get 100+ degree temps in summer... i’m guessing that’s a no go unless it was in full-partial shade.

Put the plant down while you talk, and photograph it straight-on, rather than from above! Distracting to watch you change hands attempting to hold onto it, & all the while it's crooked.
