I planted two cherries last year. One got 20 flowers, and one got a SINGLE flower. I used a paint brush to cross pollinate from the single flower and it resulted in THREE cherries (almost ripe now). I have never been more excited over three cherries.

We lost our fig tree due to the soil being saturated from Tropical storm Hillary and it was as so full of fruit. We decided on a cherry tree. It has five varieties grafted in. Thinking about four years til fruit is just exasperating. Lol. You gave me a bit of hope.

My Cherry tree is two years old now, had beautiful flowers, I remember seeing few cherries but when went to pick in the morning, not even one cherry for me. I compensated myself with 3 apples on the other tree.

What a nice story! I've always loved harvesting food in my front yard because people are always amazed! I'm in an urban spot, so people are sometimes a little nervous about tasting things grown there. Still, it's great to demonstrate what's possible! 😉👍

Consider starting with plants that can be moved later! Consider alpine strawberries, herbs, rhubarb, hostas, and other moveable edibles. You can start a small nursery with very little space! 😉

I'm so amazed by your rainier cherries! They're my favorite type and the kind of cherry that I really want to grow someday :) Unfortunately I don't have a yard so I've been trying to look for information on how to grow fruit trees in pots... so maybe one day I can still have one!
Wow just WOW👏you amaze me each time❤️my dad also put that bing cherry tree on my property around ten years back and it was also the first tree he put in and right now I’m eating the fruit cause imma pig and can’t get enough of it😂❤️this video is just in time😏
I have a Stella cherry and got my first fruit this year .. they taste great and there are some still ripening 🍒
James, everytime you talk about how much fruit or veggie there is in front of you, you rub your hands together in excitement!! 00:20 and 7:46 It makes me happy everytime. 😄
I got some cherries from the store, several times 6 years ago. I saved all the seeds and went to the long process, of putting them in the freezer, bringing them out after 3 months, cracking them open , soaking the seeds in peroxide and water. And planting them I now have over 29 cherry trees, also three apricot trees. And five avocado tree. I really enjoyed growing trees, from seeds.
Great to see you and Tuck again James, and as always such great information. Stay safe
Now I live in the tropics, zone 11 to be exact. When I was a kid my neighbor had a fully grown cherry tree and to this day I've never seen another in my country, but......its motivation for me to attempt to grow one for myself. Wish me luck.
I do garden but I also LOVE his enthusiasm & his passion for growing things
You and tuck are such a blessing to watch! 😃😃
I got a Barbados cherry tree from one of my favorite nurseries. I have been loving harvesting from it. So this whole thing made me smile.
WE don't get enough "COLD" days to grow cherries! :( But we have several Fuji Persimmons, Paw Paw, peaches, and plums! Good to see you in the food forest James! Hope you and Tuck are doing great!

Thank you for teaching us about cherries! Hopefully I’ll plant one next spring!
Planted a bare-root 'Benton' cherry this year (self-fertile) from Fedco and the thing is growing like gangbusters. There are lots of cherry orchards around here so our local birds are savvy. I'll have to figure something out if I expect to eat any myself.

@@Ripleyripper Cool! I have a tart cherry tree, strawberries, blackberries, boysenberries and raspberries. I also have two huge mulberry trees, one white and one purple. The birds will peck at a few of the cherries in the top of the tree, but mostly leave everything alone. I do hope this works for you as well. There is also a spray, I believe, that you can spray on the tree that tastes bad to the birds.
@karlsfoodforestgarden6963

But you will also get some added cross-pollination from the nearby trees. One of my friends hangs rubber snakes from his fruit trees. I wonder if that would work? My trees don't get much bird pressure, but they do get some. Still, with a healthy tree you will probably still have a lot of cherries for yourself.
Thanks James, I have learned so much from you !
I do regret not planting fruit trees when we moved in 20 years ago but I didn't because we didn't plan to stay here. I would recommend others not make my mistake.

That's so awesome!!! James is a great resource. His library of videos is inspiring. It will take a little time for your mulch to break down, so you may want to put down an underlayer of compost. At least that's what I've done when I've started with fresh wood chips like that. I get my compost for cheap from the local department of public works. I don't know if you have anything like that, but it's worth looking!
So excited! I'm in 8b and didn't think it was cold enough here for cherries but apparently Stella and Raniers are good to go! Getting them put in this month. Thanks for the information 😊
Just ordered 2 Rainer cherry trees to help pollinate my bing. I'm always trying to figure out how is it that you are picking cherries off the tree when mine are not even close to being ready. Thanks to you and back to eden I'm on my third year growing my food forest. Over 30 fruit trees and just had heavy equipment up yesterday ro clear more space to double our food forest close to an acre. I cant thank you enough James. Going to start documenting our journey to see how it evolves. Been with you since before you built your greenhouse and want you to know how much of an inspiration you have been for us to not only create a food forest but also build a geothermal greenhouse for tropicals in zone 5b. Sending nothing but love and gratitude to you and tuck. Shalom. continued blessings and Gods grace and abundance.
Thanks for your encouragement 🙏

You make nice and interesting video's. Keep up the good work. We have different experience with pruning cherry trees. If pruning cherries late, there are problems with gummosis. It is advised to prune after harvest until late summer and only on dry days. This way the tree has time to lock of the wounds before winter. Also leave about 1 to 2 branch diameters sticking out from the stem. This way cherries amputate the last part themselves and are better protected against disease. If you want stimulating growth, prune in or right after blossom time. We are in western Europe though. Also for the bare root planting, we prefer planting in autumn. When planting in spring, the trees need a lot more pampering or they will die. When planting in autumn, the roots have had time to settle and soil moisture levels are restored. We also have frost here of between -5ºC and -20ºC and the amount of tries dying is lower than planting in spring.
Thanks James for sharing! I have learned so much.. Love your channel. 🌱🌱
Great info! Thank you for sharing.
Pointing the graft north also helps the trees weak point be protected from the southern facing sun.
Thanks James and Tuck great tip's and tricks 👍
Bush cherries grow to about 6' so easier to protect and harvest. 🍒 Tuck is adorable!

Don't forget that the tart cherries have great medicinal value 😉 What variety of yellow cherry do you have! We acquired a "Governor Wood Yellow Cherry" this year. Also a Montmorency Medicinal Tart 😉 As a child, my parents rented a home in Utah (early 70's).... That is the very first time I experienced a cherry tree / fell in love of them (a massive 🍒🌳 was in the yard). 😍 Happy Gardening!!!!!
Im always amaze everytime watching your videos
My neighbor just gave us a bunch of these little cherries last month! I’ve been fermenting them! So far delicious, not done yet. ♥️
I had a mature Benton and took it out. North VA here 7a. After years of watching brown rot ruin the entire crop, it finally got some kind of blight that went deep into the wood. I just gave up. One year I got some kind of black leaf disease that defoliated the entire tree later in the summer/fall. Oh and the Japanese beetles love this thing more than anything in a ten mile radius. Hopefully some of you all have better luck in the South with these.
Very thorough coverage of cherries... This is the best home orchard video that I have seen so far... Keep it up!

Could you please make a video on which plants you grow in beds vs in the woodchip areas for all of your plants? You made some videos last year clarifying about "why your not using back to eden" and how you actually are, but can you make one stating what you do for each and every plant you grow? Thanks, keep up the good work!
Thank you for this video!! We’ve had our cherry tree producing for a few years now but we’ve definitely have not been pruning enough! We prune a ton but every spring the growth is wild and impedes the sun getting to the fruit! Can’t wait to really give it a good one this winter 🤞🏻
