Just bought a beautiful 1 gallon basil from Lowes. I boiled water, put some in a plastic pot saucer so it can drink from below. It works!!!! Somehow this made planting basil seeds feel less overwhelming. Someone I work with gifted everyone plantable stationery on her birthday (which is wonderful) I was impatient so I took the seeds out and I’ve sowed them. Hoping for the best!

So glad you liked the video. Seeds will germinate in potting soil too. Just keep in mind that seedlings may be affected with soil borne fungal disease such as "damping off". Good Morning😁I will be growing more Basil in the near future. I love cooking with fresh Basil. I had a beautiful Basil plant growing on my patio last summer. It seems my beagle Sophie loves fresh Basil also. That little brat ate my entire Basil plant one afternoon when I left her on the patio. So it’s back to starting my Basil over again🥴 Sophie is not allowed near my patio garden!! Your Basil looks AMAZING!! Be Blessed and have a Great day on Purpose.

One thing love about basil is , evrytime you pinch remove leaves it grows back double . My basil plants are now 12 inch in diameter and 15 inch high , all from little seed , I add it to my sandwiches and pasta all the time fresh . love it

I'm currently growing two basil seedlings as companions for my tomatoes, but after accidentally tearing one of the basil leaves and getting nice whiff of the smell (heavenly!!!) I'm going to plant extra in a separate container.

Until seeds germinate, I keep them in a shed like room in my backyard (at about room temperature). As soon as they pop up, seedlings are moved to a sheltered part sun location (3-4 hours of early morning sunlight). On very sunny days, I provide some shade (like patio umbrella). I usually don't use grow lights for my seedings, only if it is cloudy for few days and not enough sunlight. So delighted to hear you love my videos and thank you very much for your comment!😊

Nice video. I've sown basil from harvested seeds before on a wet paper, and then planted them in soil. I'll do it in a mix as you suggested this time around. Could you inform what the advantage is to transplant the seedlings into a plug, and to then move the plug to the final pot, rather than moving the seedlings straight to the pot? Thanks!

The seedlings aren't that strong to be potted straight into a rich potting mix. I also found that tiny seedlings are more prone to disease specially damping off, if they haven't developed strong root system. I am sharing the best practice I have experienced, but there can be definitely other methods that work too. Hope this answers your question and thank you so much for your comment!

Glad you love the videos. For pests, I monitor my plants daily and with first sign of any pest, I try to control them depending on the pest type. Neem oil mix is organic and helps a lot. If you have a severe pest presence, protect them using a garden netting. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

So glad you loved the video. If you are planting seedlings individually like I did in the video, you can have them 4-5 inches apart and they will do great. However, if you are planting 3-4 seedlings together, or you want to grow bushy varieties of basil, you may want to plant them more apart each other. It is hard to tell without seeing but I am guessing it should be "damping off", which is a fungal disease. Try to use a clean seed starting mix. You can sprinkle cinnamon powder on soil to help deterring fungus. Also you can spray a light dose of fungicide such as copper ones to prevent this problem. Hope this helps and good luck!

I prefer to sprinkle tiny seeds rather than sowing couple of them in each plug. This let me choose strong ones to be pricked out. Seed mixes usually don't contain any food for plants, so pricking out is also a good time to make the soil rich for seedlings to grow better. The ones in grow bag I watered them almost daily, but plastic pots hold moisture better and I watered less frequently. You want to keep soil moist but not soggy. Glad you found my video helpful and thank you so much for your comment!

This is the first video that has made me feel confident I can do this Can you tell me how often to water in the various stages? I have bad reactions to many growing mediums but I know I can use coir, is there a sub for perlite? Also, I don't know where to find manure?, I am worried how to make compost, hmm... Also, is there a sub for potting soil? I have an array of organic seeds I can get at my library.

So glad to hear it! I am sure you can do this! For watering, the best is to keep moist, but not soggy. You can skip watering is the top soil is wet. In hot wethers, water daily. Perlite can be replaced by vermiculite. You can also use gardening grit but that will make pots heavier. All garden centers carry bagged manure. Chicken or cow manures sold in bags are composted and ready to use. Happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!

Once you bring home the pot from TJ, water them and try to separate the seedlings (very gently) and plant them individually in small pots. keep them well watered and provide part sun. they will thrive. Happy growing and thank you for your comment!

it is possible, but plants grow to their best when they have enough room to grow and develop roots. You may end up with smaller plants but it is doable. You can skip the pricking out step and replant them directly in larger pot thou. Thank you very much for your comment!

I love your video, I am currently trying basil from store bought plant(not keeping my hopes high). I want to try the seed method too so quick couple of questions: 1.) which month did you sow the seeds ? 2.) will your method work in USDA Hardiness Zones 10a and 10b? 3.) what soil are you using, I have miracle grow container soil, will that work?

Thank very much you for your comment. 1. I started in March. 2. Sure. You can start seeds from February to May in zone 10. Keep them well-watered and provide some shade from sun in very hot days. But otherwise they will do totally fine. 3. I usually make my own potting mix ( refer to video at 5:16), but any general purpose potting soil will work. For a better result, add small amount of bagged composted manure (chicken, steer,...) to make it nitrogen rich. I hope this helps and thanks again for visiting.

Great video and very informative. I have a few questions, when I first plant the seeds how often should i water them ( I will be using a plastic pot) , should i expose them to direct sunlight? If yes how many hours a day? Also, I've seen some videos where they cover the seedling with a plastic wrap, is it necessary? And what does it do ? Basically you want to keep seed soil moist but not soggy. For the light, 4-6 hours of early morning sunlight is the best. or you can place them in a part sun/part shade location, but avoid exposing them to hot midday sun. The plastic cover is to help keep soil moist. If you manage to check yourself and keep soil constantly moist, plastic cover is not needed (I never use it). And the mature basils will do best if you keep them watered. Do not let top soil to dry out. I normally water them every other day and if hot, daily. Thank you for the guidance in the video! I'm curious, what happens if we skip the step of pricking out the seedlings? Would the basil still be able to grow in the original pot? I live in a small apartment and don't have a lot of gardening space, was thinking that if they could simply grow in the original pots I could avoid having to get more containers.

Hi! So glad you found the video informative. Soaking seeds is usually for seeds with hard shells to reduce germination time. Basil seeds are not that hard to germinate and soaking is not necessary. Thank you for your help, I tried to grow them in the coco peat but they didn't germinate so I put them in a box with some tissues they did sprut but died after an inch of growth also tried to transfer a few in light soil but they did not survive anything you can help me out with would be appreciated where I live I dont get fresh basil so I am very dedicated to grow in my home garden. Not a big difference between a tray and container bin. But if you mean individual plugs, that's because Basils have tiny seeds and it is easier to sprinkle seeds rather than sowing couple of seeds in each plug. I do this so I can choose strong seedlings to be pricked out. This also gives me the opportunity to make the soil rich for seedlings to grow better. I'm wondering if I could germinate basil seeds in a container with potting soil and lightly cover the top surface with a thin layer of seeding-starting mix, could I avoid having to prick-out the seedlings to pot them up? Sure you can. I am showing what I found works best for growing them in my experience but sure there can be many ways to gardening. Some seeds struggle to germinate in potting soil due to fungal or mold problems. Also you may want to separate the seedlings if you plant them to close to each other. The first time I grew Basil indoors, I planted a single seed in each pot. After watching your video, my reaction was that this wasn't a good idea. I'm about to start growing it again this year, but this time, I'm just gonna try throwing a bunch of seeds on the surface of a container of potting soil and then thin them out appropriately. Hello SoCal neighbor. I am also located in SoCal and currently have basil growing. You can definitely start seeds now. In fact seeds will germinate quicker. Keep seedlings outside in part shade or under a beach umbrella. And when planted if it is getting too hot, bring them to shade, and avoid noon sunlight. Keep them well watered and if you see any sign of flowering, just remove them asap. Happy growing and thank you for getting in touch.

Basil can last the entire summer, and if you have moderate winter time, you can keep harvesting basil for next year too. Just remember to keep them watered. Thank you very much for your comment!

Just bought some herbs to grow on my own! What organic soil do you recommend?

that's great. I make my own soil mix shown in video but for bagged soil, Kellogg Garden organic plus potting mix is a good choice. Thanks.

Lovely! But how did you avoid fungus gnats? Did you use any neem cake or neem oil in your soil mix?

For flying gnats you can use yellow stickers around the plants to catch them. Also try to keep top of soil not too soggy and let it dry to not attract them. But most importantly, you need to take care of their eggs/larvae in the soil that harm the roots and plants. For that, the most effective is using Mosquito Bits, which is a biological larvicide. Question; Did you cover them tightly and grow them inside? It’s still very warm out. Should I just leave the open dirt with no plastic cover?

I don't cover any of my seeds with plastic. If it is too hot, you can put the seed tray in a cool shaded area. Expose them to early morning sunlight so they don't get leggy. happy growing and thank you for visiting!

They are prone to many common leaf eating bugs such as aphids, slugs, or beetles. But most problematic are the fungal and bacterial diseases like wilts, blight, mildew, bacterial spots,...Regular monitoring and preventative actions work much better to control these issues. Spraying neem oil mix is one of the best organic methods to use. hope this answers your question and thank you so much for your comment.

Just wondering why you dont plant a seed in each plug to avoid an extra (tedious) step?

For tiny seeds (such as basil, celery, lettuce,...) it is easier to sprinkle seeds rather than sowing couple of seeds in each plug, and choose strong ones to be pricked out. Pricking out is also a good time to make the soil rich for seedlings to grow better. You certainly can sow seeds in any way that suits you. Cheers!

I have a basil seedling for more than a month now and it's not growing crazy like yours, it still has the 2 baby leaf, what should I do?

It is hard to tell without seeing. If the weather is cold, that is completely normal. Seedlings grow slowly when it is cold. If the seedlings look healthy, get adequate light and don't show signs of wilting, then you just need to keep them warm at above 65F (18C). Also once you see first pair of true leaves (not the tiny ones), feed them with diluted (1/2 of suggested dose) fish fertilizer, or a general purpose water soluble fertilizer. Please note that the timeline in the video is just for reference and can differ for different conditions. I am guessing you just need to be patient. Happy growing and thank you for visiting!

Hi, new gardener here. I’m being told to harden off my basil. I noticed you didn’t do that and they are thriving. I live in SoCal so the sun is harsher than it appears in this video. Did you harden off? If not, how come? Thanks in advance!

Hi. I am in SoCal too and usually with our mild winters you can skip hardening off your plants. You can start indoors, but as soon as seedlings emerge, bring them outdoor for a 4-6 hours of early morning sunlight. If too hot in midday sun, keep them in part shade. If night temperature drop below 40F, which rarely happens in SoCal, bring them inside at nights. Otherwise by keeping them outdoor, they will get used to outdoor conditions and grow well. Basil grow perfectly in cool weathers, don't wait until hot summers to grow them. Hope this helps and thank you so much for getting in touch. Happy growing!

Ignore the first two minutes and plant the seeds directly in the individual cells so you don’t have to disturb the roots.

lovely vid, why do i need to pinch the bushy parts if they start growing? also i have a rabbit will composting his manure work for my plants?

When plants are young, pinching will let them grow bushier with more leaves. Once they are bushy already, basically you harvest by pinching top growth and let plants produce more fresh leaves. Rabbit manure is one of the strongest manure and perfect for nitrogen loving plants such as basil. Just make sure it is well composted and start using in small doses, since it is very rich in nutrient. Happy growing and thank you for your comment!

Should I keeping it in sunlight or shady area?

Only in very hot midday sun you will need to provide some shade. Otherwise if it is not very hot, you can grow them in sunlight. Thank you for visiting!

I have my seedlings growing well, about 6 weeks now. but they are very thin and tall. do I pinch them back?

You may pinch them. But if they are tall, maybe they don't get enough light. And if they are not separated and pricked out yet, try to do so to help them grow stronger individually. Thanks for visiting.

Does the soil need to be very moist at all times? Mine stopped growing after a small shoot with 2 tiny leaves..?

I suggest to wait and see how many of them germinate. If they germinate too close to each other and you will not need that many plants, just remove few so other have room to grow. And if you want to keep them, try to prick them out while they are young. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

Do you have holes in the bottom of the blue container? Do you have this in a warm place? How often are you watering this?

Yes, it necessary to have drainage hole at the bottom of any plastic container. Basil prefer warm weather, but avoid hot midday sun. Watering depends on the condition, keep the soil moist but not soggy. If hot, water daily. Thanks for visiting.

Where did you placed the seedling tray after sprouts, water them, put in fertilizer. where did you put vour seedlings in direct sunlight thru the stages

I recently brought pots, soil and seeds but I didn’t think u had to transfer them so can I just plant the seeds into the big pots and leave them in there to grow

Just planted mine yesterday. If I don’t harvest it, and only want the plant for decorative purposes, what should I expect regarding the plant’s lifespan?

Even if you only want the plant for decoration, it is a good idea to pick leaves so the plants grow more greens and don't go to flowering. If not effected by disease and if temperature doesn't drop to freezing, you can enjoy them pretty much all year long. Happy growing and thanks for visiting.
