good video. I prefer to use natural twine to tie my trees. Over the years as a landscape maintenance contractor I have seen too many trees grow around the plastic tape which can damage the tree. The natural twine rots away after a year and the odds of it damaging the tree is much reduced. Keep up the great videos.

What's the size tree used for espaliers, does it have to be a dwarf? Or will the small size be better for size control? Can it be planted on a pot? Sorry for so many questions but the one at the beginning of the video looks great! Thank you

Great video! Might not be a bad idea to join Amazon's affiliate membership then add a link to the book you mention in the comments. Then you'd get a kickback from anything purchased right after they click the link.

Or maybe, quit using Amazon altogether since Amazon really doesn't mesh well with organic living.

Great video! Could an espalier growing against my house damage the foundation?

Hello Angie, fruiting trees like apple pear do not have very strong penetrating roots (unlike evergreens for example). Figs tree have long roots and depending on how compacted is the soil nearby the house the tree will go wherever it is easier. If you want to reduce the chance to have damage to foundation , drainage, or any work you may have nearby foundation, use a semi dwarf root stock which are shallow and more hairy instead of pivotant roots. For apple, pear and plums you have these options. If you know that you have more clay soil you may have a better chance with pears than with apples. Also consider not only the roots that may damage, think about watering the soil nearby the foundation: if you don't have a good waterproof membrane on the underground foundation that may add to the problem of the roots. If you chose a semi-dwarf root stock you don't have to water in large amounts because the roots are just 20-60 cm deep. I would say any fruiting tree that you will be told that needs support would have shallow roots and it would be good for planting nearby foundations. Good luck ! Chris

What side of building / fences are appropriate? I am hearing that they need sun, but also that south facing is bad cause they can get too much heat. Can you give me some advice on this?

I have a few espaliered pears and apples on my south facing wall -- during their initial growth, when it was too hot, I simply draped a shade cloth over the top-most horizontal wire used for espaliering.

Please watch 'High Density Landscape' video by Dave Wilson Nursery -- it shows several varieties, though most are temperate, not tropical. Also check a video on this topic by Oklahoma Gardening around 1:40 for how to train a tree for espalier branching.
