How To Grow a Tamarind Tree-Tammy The Tamarind
In March 2015, I grew my first tamarind from seed. Now it has grown into an impressive small tamarind tree. This video is the story of the trials, errors, and tribulations of growing this tropical tree over the years in Texas (zone 8b).
The video can also serve as a guide on how to grow a tamarind tree or seedling after the first year. Check out this video for the story of my first ‘plant baby’, Tammy the Tamarind.

Pretty cool, This past year I've also been growing a tamarind tree. I would recommend doing some pruning in the late winter. Pruning strengthens and thickens the trunk and remaining branches, and also encourages denser growth. It can feel harsh to cut away the live parts of the plant, but ultimately it does it well.
Love the story behind her name!
I just planted twin tamarinds in south Texas. I protected them for 2 years and after this big freeze I feel somewhat relived we won’t have another for another 100
Well how about that; all in one day I have mentioned Tammy the sister in law, watched Tammy the movie (it played on tv) and now met Tammy the tamarind. Great video by the way!
As long as this video was. I watched every second of it! So happy for you, it looks great
Very nice story I enjoyed
Really enjoyed this!!
I love watching Tammy growing process. Thanks for sharing.
Your video inspired me to start my own tamarind seeds.

Just one or two more years left for yours to start fruiting .
Such dedication! Thank you so much, I’m in the process of trying to germinate and grow our own Tams and your video made me smile and have hope. Hope Tammy and her sisters are thriving!
Peace. Your documentary was very thorough. The tree needs more nourishment to bear fruit. You’ll have to pump up the fertilizer you’re using especially before winter. Thank you. Very enjoyable.
Wow, that's cool. Great video.
Great journey for a great woman. Thank you for sharing your invaluable experience.
Great info! Wifey and I are trying our first "Tammies"! We name all our favs too! Thanks for your time!
What an excellent story. I really enjoyed that. Thank you.
Enjoyed Tammys story thank you.....touch and go wow
Awesome docu on growing Tammy from seed! They really do feel like our babies after all the blood sweat and tears 💚
Very detailed information. Very nice
Wow you worked hard!
what a fantastic story..🤗
Hey if you scuff the seeds up with some sandpaper so the hard outer shell can absorb water. Once you put them in water they will germinate in a few days to a week. As soon as the outer shell wrinkles up. I had 90% of them sprout.
I loved your demonstration. I would love to get a tamarind tree
what a great story :) well done!
Love your video and beautiful tree very bushy. I have one I planted in pot 6 years ago it hasn’t flower yet. It’s about 3 feet tall.
thanks for sharing this, great video!
Love your video sister ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤. Long live your and all plants . Thanks for the tips 😊
Awesome video 👍🏽👍🏽
Omg what a journey
I remember eating them while still kinda green too. 😋 And the leaves/new sprouts
I love your videos
Thank you for your lovely story about Tammy. My friend gave me two tamarind pods yesterday and that was why I found your video. I planned to grow them from seeds but was skeptical of their survival. Since tamarinds are tropical plants, I guess they are high maintenant. Not sure I should grow them or not. Btw, I live in Texas just like you.
its cute story 😊😊
All the best. Please plant more tamarind.
CONGRATS
Very nice ❤❤
Companion planting. Certain plants attract ladybugs and would help with aphids pretty sure. But i enjoyed the video. Hopefully ill try my own tamarind thanks for the tip with the nail clippers
Great video. Hope you have fruit in a couple yrs! I planted 6 seeds (I brought seeds back from Puerto Rico) but 4 of them didn't make it. They went a few days with no water in the Florida heat. But the 2 I have are now 6 months old and doing great!

Did they fruit ?? I m wondering since your comment was made 3 years ago.
I love this. I just wanted to see how people grow tamarimd from seed and I got a whole saga about Tammy and I have been fully invested all the way through. I'm planting my seeds tomorrow. Thank you.
Just wondering, do you eat the leaves? If not, you should give it a go as you wait for it to bear fruit. It's pretty yum especially in soups.

I haven't eaten the leaves yet, but I'd love to try it! 😋

I love the story behind Tammy. And the care you gave her. But I have to jettison the idea of planting a tamarind tree. I do not have your patience. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much! It's a waiting game for sure. In August 2022, when Tammy was seven years old, she produced one flower! I was so surprised and happy that she produced a flower for the first time. But it didn't produce even though Tammy was very healthy. As years go on, I'm realizing that my natural growing zone may be too short for tamarinds. They'll grow and produce new branches and leaves, but I don't think they'll make productive flowers and fruit. My tamarinds HATE the winter greenhouse and they'll have to start from ground zero in the spring when I take them outside. If anything, it's a nice plant to grow passively. Apparently, you can eat and cook the sour leaves in dishes! I might try that soon!
How is Tammy now? I really enjoyed your storytelling, btw.
Iovely I have a sweet Tamarind growing in pot in the UK
Tammy 😂 how cute.
you took better care of Tammy then most parents take care of thier kids
Any update on Tammy?
❤️
Is the tamarind trees have thorns?
Ok sir
How long does it take to bear fruit
Did it fruit and how long did it take to fruit I t?
Home stead florida would be a nicer home for her because she can grow in the tropical weather she will be a great big tree trust me
I like your vedio, I'm also fond of tropical plants, but it's not so easy, because I leave in New York, still I am trying. I have couple of tropical plants. I have 2 tamarind plants, they're 3 years old. Even I have couple of mango plant's, they're small though. I will talk to you again.
@ShamrockgirlWorld I'd there any hope to grow a Tamarind bush instead of tree? I'm in zone, wait for it...... 7 I have a very large window facing south east. Can I bring the Tammy in during cold temps?
hHey Shamrock, thank you for sharing you're tamarind adventure! I have a small tamarind plant tip, that i grew from seed, but the little seed pods on either side of the delicate trunk fell off by accident, when did your seed pods naturally fall off of the plants stems? please?
@shamrockgirl804
4 жыл бұрын
I think the seed pod parts fall off at the two-month mark. If the leaves sprouted and formed before they fell off, the seedling should be ok. It may be stunted a little bit, but as long as the leaves are out, it should be ok 😊
I kept mine in water for 12 hours only and it grew. Now I have two seedlings . It grew in just 9 days. I will make a twin trunk tamarind bonsai by fusing roots together. Don't grow in the yard its massive tree.
It's difficult to get the germination to start.
What is your climate? Mine died (1 year old) at 4 degrees celcius.
I soaked my seeds over night then just planted them they rooted on the third day and thats in the uk

Will you keep your plant indoors, the UK has a cooler temp and it can get very cold there.
Fun facts: Tamarind is awesome for migraine/headaches!! Try it out Thank me later👍🏽
The rain is not what rotted your greenhouse plastic it was the ultraviolet light from the sun.
When will Tammy create tamarind pods?
@shamrockgirl804

As of May 2022 at seven years old, Tammy hasn't flowered yet. This year, I've switched fertilizer that will encourage root and flower development. She also may be still recovering from the February 2021 freeze (her top half froze off). Fingers crossed I see something this year! 😉

I hope you get tamarind from Tammy.
The aphids look a lot like mealy bugs.
Your tree suffering for nitrogen in deep cold.. please find some cow dung (old)..50gm per month with magnasiam salphate salt
nice story growing that tree, but im so confused about measurements, theres no football fields nor washing machines, how people of the rest of world would know how it did it? at least use bullet size to describe it, thats one of few things rest of world understands with USA....
