I did this back in 2002. I wanted to reenlist after 9/11, but the Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard wasn't taking prior service. Found an instruction called General Recall to Active Duty, so I joined the Reserve. Dropped a request chit and a year later, I was on active duty at TPU Norfolk awaiting orders. Stationed at VFA-94, NRS Myrtle Beach, and LHD-5. Served 21 years and retired in 2015. "It's not just a job. It's an adventure..." still true to this day.

I can always do an ADT or an ADOS with my cross-assigned unit. Where is your cross-assigned unit? As for myself, I am with VR-56 out of NAS Oceana.

This How To Go From Navy Reserves To Active Duty/RC2AC via Navy Transition Coach is very detailed and informative. I do still look forward to and obviously intend to follow through with my goal and plan to affiliate with the navy reserves first espectially because I do greatly enjoy residing in the U.S. east coast area that I greatly enjoy living in. However, I recently saw a discussion from an online navy reserve related reddit thread that there are also options to apply for 9 month andor longer navy reserve billets and then apply to be extended at the command some time after selection and once you have been there. As a result I admit that this indirectly influences me to keep an open mind between that, the fts program and the info in this video. I do feel informed by the honest implication reminder in this video that the approval to get selected for this program does tie into whichever job, rank, and rate that an applicant holds at the time.

Hello, I just visited a recruiter today. He brought up Reserves. He said If I go reserve first I can move over to active at any point of time. That while in reserve, if I get tired of my job and what not, I can choose orders and go active. The reason being is because he said if I go active I would lose my civilian job ( I am a library assistant, just got promoted.) I worked hard for my new position. I dont want to lose my new job. He said if I go reserve i would have better flexibility for college, keep my civilian job, stay around my family, they would have health care, and if I get tired of the reserves I could either move to active at any time or just ask to choose orders somewhere. I wanted to go active first, despite the fact Id be leaving my little girl and wife for a few months. Any of that true? I am really undecided on this.

  • @NavyTransitionCoach

You MUST be in the Reserves to go BACK on active/TAR. Prior Service can't go straight from inactive (completely out of the military) to active. There is a different process for us. So yes, that NC1 is correct. It's much easier to go in the Reserves as your current rate then switching to TAR as an NC. NC is a unique rate. You have to get accepted by the community to be a part of it. It's not like being a PS or QM where the ECM is the deciding person. NC is an application, interviews, required training, etc. I'm going through the process of becoming a TAR NC myself and I'm not even close to having my package complete. It's an extensive process if you don't have all of your stuff already in order.

@@sometimesitdobelikethatdoe It's all based on what your year group allows, if your current community will let you go, and what rates are available. It's not harder than switching rates at the end of your active contract. It all just depends. Also of NC is what you want go for it. It'll be a process but don't quit if that's what you want. Also an HR degree would be more fitting for a PS or YN. Those are fairly easy rates to get into.

You can go straight back active. There’s no need to even go reserves first. Talk to an active duty recruiter not a prior service recruiter. They want to lie and tell you that you have to go reserves first and then do RC2AC but you don’t have to. Active duty recruiters don’t like dealing with prior active duty members because they don’t get their instant gratification quota points but there is a way to go straight back active duty instead.
