How to Get Your Smell Back After Covid with Smell Training

Ғылым және технология

Lost your smell after Covid? Here's how you can use olfactory training or smell training to restore your sense of smell. Most cases of anosmia (lack of smell) return after 2-3 weeks after a viral infection like Covid19. Most people regain their sense of smell and taste within 7 days, but don't lose hope if you've been waiting for 2-3 weeks or more and still can't smell. Smell therapy (like physical therapy for your sense of smell!) has shown to be an effective way to restore your sense of smell, even with long term cases of anosmia.
Based on the most commonly cited study by Dr. Thomas Hummel, olfactory training uses four unique scents designed to cover different fragrance categories using:
Lemon for fruity smells: amzn.to/34DU9bH
Rose for a flower fragrances: amzn.to/3mKPCuc
Cloves for spicy or bitter smells: amzn.to/3nYwD05
And Eucalyptus for ethereal odors or resinous smells similar to fresh cleaning solutions: amzn.to/3hkuREL
How to Perform Smell Training:
Step 1: Find at least 4 familiar fragrances such as Lemon, Rose, Cloves, and Eucalyptus (see above). Place 5-6 drops of oil on a piece of absorbent paper like watercolor paper and place into an amber glass jar: amzn.to/2M3Q2zq
Step 2: Twice a day, smell each container for about 10 to 15 seconds, taking just take a couple small sniffs of the fragrance. Try to keep the smell at the top of your nasal cavity instead of taking a giant whiff of the jar.
Step 3: Track Your Progress
Keep track of your progress each day by rating how strong you find each smell with each attempt.

Hey there! I wouldn’t smell vinegar but I’m glad you found some of the scents at your local store. Stick with those and keep up the hope that your smell will return. It’s depressing to lose your smell and taste but focus on the smell training every day even if you can’t smell anything. The research shows recovery in about 2-3 weeks but for many people including myself, recovery can start sooner than that.

For me it came back gradually, I had it come back for an evening, and then disappear again, but it came back fully shortly after that. I had great fun drinking artificial grape drinks, as I normally cannot stand them, but it all just tasted sweet to me. Hi there, first of all thanks for the video. I lost my sense of smell for about 10 days, always had my sense of taste but as my sense of smell has started to recover I find that things also have more taste. To anyone watching the video, if you are going through this too, you have my sympathy but don't lose heart, I have read that the olfactory nerve system constantly regenerates itself and typically takes 6-8 weeks to complete a regeneration cycle. So there is plenty of hope for you to recover. My sense of smell started to come back 2 weeks ago, I could only smell a few things at first and very faintly and most things I still couldn't smell. Then the things I could smell got stronger and I could smell new things that the previous day I couldn't. My recovery has been gradual and is at about 80-85% now, and each day improving. I have been doing smell training for 2 weeks now with a specific kit of essential oils but, I also regularly smell things around the house as I have a reference to how they should smell. I have also been eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and making sure to get enough omega 3, ground flax, ground chia and walnuts everyday and making sure to get enough B12. On the recommendation of a doctor I have also been taking 600mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid each day as well. I don't know if any or all of this helped but I am very grateful that my sense of smell is returning and improving each day. I have noticed that it is not as strong in the morning but much stronger by the afternoon with certain scents, other scents seem less affected by this and have the same strength of odour, although these are the scents that I started to recover first, like mint, eucalyptus and citrus. Don't lose heart, I know it is difficult. Do your research and help yourself as much as you can with diet and smell training. I wish you all the best and a swift recovery.

But who knows - maybe I'll have my sense of taste back by the time I'm working again. Lol. Have you actually tried CFA food recently and could you not taste it? Hope all of us can taste again soon! I think this is my 8th day since I lost my sense of taste, but I can taste things here and there, though they don't always seem accurate. I had taco bell last night and it was missing some flavors (my burrito supreme was rather bland, sadly). I also tried a BLT taco, and it MIGHT have been good! 😂

Mike, You my have TEMPORARILY, and it is temporary, lost you taste and smell, but most important is that the sensory perceptions of taste and smell that we all possess, and can not lose (other than a catastrophic event) is permanently ingrained in memory receptors in the brain. I do not have to smell a new bag of coffee but I do remember what that smell was If I can just see someone opening the bag. Ahhhh...I loveED that smell I think to myself which validates the premise that smell has not been lost totally without physically coming into olfactory distance. This pathway of visual receptors can be used as a analogy to "smelling salts" and the effects it produces on a boxer who has been knocked unconscious. These salts "stimulate" and awaken. Stimulate and Awaken. Therein lays the key coupled with the evidence of the loss waning in the coming weeks. Once a single hint of a smell is detected, even one you can not identify the recovery is on a fast track. Mike you WILL smell and taste again. Begin by remembering smells by sight. The process may challenge you as you await that morning when all sensory organs returns to normal. The first hint of a recovering smell or any sensory perception is like your first date, well the date that hits the high note when all is said and done. You just can't wait for the next one but some way and some how you do. Good Luck

I think the longer this goes on the less chance of recovery. So I would suggest folks get on the retraining right away. And my sympathies to anyone suffering with loss of smell. My loss of taste is more upsetting to me. I can sort of taste individual flavors, but when foods are mixed together they cancel each other out and the food is tasteless. In general, I can usually tell what a food is, but it is so mild it is barely enjoyable. But hey, I almost died, and I’m still alive, so I focus on that 😀

I would say that in the morning, my smell and taste are a bit muted, but as the afternoon rolls around, my smell and taste seem to be at its peak. Usually between 1pm- 8pm my taste and smell are the most prominent but not 100%. I feel like my taste is at 50-60% and smell at 40-50%. I also feel like I need to warm up my senses in the morning to get them prepared to taste and smell as well. Before I take a bite of food or drink, I try to take a big whiff of it first so I can connect the two senses also.

It was a rough week to 10 days but on the mend. Looking forward to getting my taste and smell back. My daughter had a loss of smell for over 1 year ,same with my brother-in-law. but did eventually get it back although they didn't loose their taste. My daughter got sick again a few weeks ago (the variant) and kept her smell and taste. I got sick from her. although i lost my senses . looking forward to your recomendations ,i have all of the essential oils you recommended, i even added tea tree. I think i might smell the tea tree!!! yay!!!!!!! Thanks Tim i will give an update later -Mary

I lost smell and taste on 12/23/2020, found your video and started olfactory training right away. I already had Eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil and peppermint oil. I began the smell test 3-4 times a day, by 12/26/2020 tasting sweet, salty and sour was distinguishable. I could smell the oils occasionally. I finally got rose oil, lemon oil and clove oil (I had some sage oil laying around as well.) The next day I could faintly smell the rose, lemon and clove oils, the strongest was the tea tree oil...by 12/30/2020 taste was at about 50% smell about 30%...that was up from 5% taste and 0 smell on day one. Also, I started using Vick’s vaporizer to clear up the congestion, that seem to help too because the rose oil smell got stronger. When smelling the oils try to imagine smelling those things, I imagined I was smelling roses 🌹 I was bringing to my wife, I imagined cutting lemons for lemonade, I imagined my mama’s holiday ham with cloves in it, eucalyptus and tea tree oil were the only ones that were distinguishable without imagining...I also smelled everything, bar soaps, shower gels, aerosols, etc. 12/31/2020 my Wife made gumbo and it was the 1st meal I enjoyed since the loss of the smell and taste. *side note: I aided this recovery with a heavy doses Vitamin D, C, Zinc, bananas, apples, grapes and plenty of water. I’m no doctor or medical specialist but this is what’s working for me...

In the mornings and late at night it’s tougher to smell certain things so I’ve stepped up my regimen of smelling the essential oils. Now because smell is closely associated with taste, my taste is a little better than my smell sense because of the direct contact to food and drinks...but some taste don’t come through as my “memory” of those things should taste.
