Smell training for post-Covid smell loss

Фильм және анимация

If you’ve lost your sense of taste and smell for two weeks or more, smell training - sometimes called olfactory training - can help recovery. Smell training is still the only evidence-based treatment recommended for smell loss.
New research is continuing to emerge about the benefits for smell training - even for parosmia. See some of our recent insights below:

I'm starting today (July 3) and will hopefully remember to update. You should also try sleeping with a bit of Vics vapor rub. It has eucalyptus oils and improved my smell and taste the next day, which is today since I did it last night. I would say I'm at 40% smell, 25% taste. I lost my sense of smell and taste about 3 weeks ago. UPDATE July 11- After a week of doing this I felt a great improvement in smell. I can almost smell everything. The only issues is that I have to smell it up close. The strength isn't there yet but it is getting better every day. Taste has also improved. I can get most of the taste off of food but feel like there's just a tiny bit that I'm missing. Sometimes when I close my eyes and focus I can get the full taste but only for a second. Anyhow, I'm really optimistic. I'm taking a multivitamin every day and when I sleep I put on a bit of vaporub. It may be one thing, it may be another, or maybe I'm just healing naturally but as long as I'm improving I'm going to keep doing all three.

I lost my sense of smell 20 years ago, never having figured out why. I've seen ENT and have never had an explanation as to why or any treatments offered including this. There have been so many weird episodes along the way where I think I smell something, something very intense, and yet no one around me who has a working sense of smell picks up any scent. So it's like they're phantom smells. And that's really the only thing I have at this point. So I'm really looking forward to trying this thank you so much for this video.

Thanks for the recommendation of the amber jars and watercolor paper. I’ll pick those up and begin using them with my own smell therapy/training. I lost my sense of smell, and tested positive with the antigen test, during the first full week of January this year (2021) ...one full week after receiving my first shot of the Pfizer vaccine. Thankfully, I never had any other symptoms or complications (not even a fever); although closely linked/related, I never really even lost much of my sense of taste. However, as lucky and fortunate as I was/am, I’m still fighting to fully regain my sense of smell ...two months later. I still have hope though, and I believe my smell training (so far) has been very helpful. I’m also taking extra vitamins, drinking extra water, and trying to eat better too. My heart really goes out to those who share a similar experience/loss; especially those who have/had it worse. Don’t give up, take good care of yourselves, and keep up the good fight everybody!

I was tested positive for Covid and fully lost my sense of taste and smell in mid March, which did not start to return until end of May/June... which was extremely worrying but to my relief it just started to appear one day... so don’t give up! I was feeling so frustrated and defeated because it was just soooo long without my senses, but it eventually DID start to come back to my surprise. Sweet flavours returned more quickly. But very mild. And at first things seemed ok, but then I began developing a very horrible metallic/ blood/dusty smell in the air. Which I believe is very common. Then things started to smell kinda smokey, which was also gross. But over the next few weeks things became a bit more Pleasant. But still mild! My biggest issue is fresh foods like garlic and herbs and fresh vegetable, to me they all taste a bit ‘weird’ like mouldy/ dusty. I have found dried food like spices etc are stronger and normal to me. It’s not nice at all, and I can’t enjoy certain foods and scents (my perfume still smells rancid to me!), but I’m hoping with this scent training it will eventually get back to ‘normal’. Wishing everyone the best of luck.... I know how awful it is. Try to stay optimistic, as someone reminded me the other day, Covid is a vicious virus we have never experienced so we must allow for the healing process to take time. Hope this helps!! Love and peace to all. Updated on October 2020: My sister has done lots of research for us and finally discovered that what we are experiencing now is PAROSMIA. It is a condition that follows Anosmia for a lot of people... Here’s a short summery of what we learnt: ‘Parosmia is the medical term for experiencing distortions of the sense of smell. Someone with parosmia may be able to detect odours, but the smell of certain things - or sometimes everything - is different, and often unpleasant. These unpleasant smells are often described as being like chemicals, burning, faeces, rotting flesh, mould. For some people they appear in response to specific odours, and for others they can be triggered by virtually any smell. Parosmia usually occurs after your scent-detecting neurons - also called your olfactory senses - have been damaged due to a virus or other health condition. These neurons line your nose and tell your brain how to interpret the chemical information that makes up a smell. Damage to these neurons changes the way smells reach your brain. The olfactory bulbs underneath the front of your brain receive signals from these neurons and give your brain a signal about the scent: whether it’s pleasing, enticing, appetizing, or foul. These olfactory bulbs can be damaged, which can cause parosmia.’ DECEMBER update: Well the last month has been awful, really couldn’t stomach anything to eat really... just have to eat super super plain. Gosh this thing is hard going! Very hard not to feel depressed about it. But I guess we just have to be patient and remain hopeful we will absolutely recover one day. Also some foodie advice you if you’re still struggling to eat anything: My top things to eat- dark chocolate, quorn meat (imitation meat) cheese and white bread. Which gets unbelievably boring and doesn’t feel great. Heart goes out to anyone experiencing this. I hope my experience helps you understand you aren’t alone! And I believe this recovery of nerves is obviously an extremely slow process and that why it is so hard to stay motivated, but we must try to! And what I would suggest others to do is try really hard not put a timer on this thing and allow yourself heal in your own time. As frustrating and depressing as it is; we must allow our olfactory systems to grow back naturally. It will take time and patience. Please feel free to comment here for motivation and comfort- WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER AND I AM HERE WISHING YOU WELL AND PLEASE JUST COMMENT FOR SUPPORT IF YOU NEED IT ! 💫

Naomi McDonald you literally described what I’ve been going through! I lost my sense of smell in March and since may/June I started to recover slowly, but as you said some things smell just gross! It’s honestly the worst feeling I’ve ever experienced.

I feel for you! Julia Traser. It’s sooooo rubbish. But with everything; time usually does it’s amazing thang and sorts things out eventually. Terrible disheartening when it’s been this bad for so long. But don’t lose hope; I’m not! And I think the diary can really help show how we are improving in tinnnnny increments. And another tip I have is to also try and just focus on anything you CAN taste or smell and try to keep up the optimism rather than focussing on the sadness of what has happened, which I did for a while. By changing my focus to the better things; I found things had improved a tiny bit without me noticing at first...! SENDING GOOD VIBES TO YOU! X

I lost my sense of smell and taste many years ago due to allergic rhinitis.I developed nasal polyps which I had removed august last year. There was no guarantee that my senses would return and unfortunately they didn’t.My husband saw this video and said to me why not give it a go.I’d nothing to lose and everything to gain so I did. There was no change for nearly 3 months but I’m happy to say that I now can smell and taste things again and it’s amazing!!!Im still doing the sniffing of essential oils and will continue to do so,I’m not taking any chances that it’ll disappear again. In the video she does say try it for at least 4 months. So to anyone that isn’t getting instance results, don’t give up it really does work.Stick with it.I’m so glad that I did.The last few days I’ve actually been able to taste my food and I’d totally forgotten what that was like and I’d really felt that my senses were permanently damaged through having allergies for so long.Thank you😊

This was the comment I needed to read. I, as with you Susan, lost my sense of smell about five and a half years ago, and it has increasingly gotten worse. My sense of taste has gradually decreased over that time to where I can practically taste nothing and have a very bland taste in my mouth at all times. I was wondering if it was worth trying this remedy, as I had been told that once you lose that sense, it can never come back. Someone else advised hypnosis. I may give this a try, seeing that you were persistent and got results. I tend to give up on things after a few weeks, as I start seeing it as a waste of time and that I'm setting myself for another disappointment. I guess I now feel, "why not?" Thanks for your helpful comment.

I lost my sense of smell in March which was annoying but I could still taste food, so didn't fret too much. Last week I got a magnesium tablet stuck in my airways and ended up with pneumonia and at the same time the Parosmia started. This is a wholly different ball game to lack of smell - so disgusting and will affect our whole way of life if it doesn't go. I'm 66 and my husband 70 so we want to be able to enjoy what's left. This is extremely depressing. Anyway, when I've finished my antibiotics I'll start smell training and keep my fingers crossed! Thank you for the website and support.

If you hav3 this same problem, Then i have some tips which can help. 1st of all dont loose hope and dont be frutrated. Be confident. Try to take smell of very rough things. Try with menthols. Make a solution of water and eating soda and Suck it with your nose. Kepp it for a sec and then Drop it. It may sounds funny but it really helps. And you can also use nose drops. But obviusly talk with your doctor before that. I used a nasal drope called afrin. And it helped. I got my smell a week after using it.

I lost my sense of smell and taste September 1 at night right before bed. I had a "cold" 2 days prior that i believe triggered that. I got tested that Friday, its Monday (Labor Day) and im patiently waiting for the results which i have a feeling i already know the answers too. It's been a hard 6 days. Depression kicked in heavy over the weekend. All i do is cry hahaha. I eat and i taste nothing and I get discouraged. Eating has become mechanical and something i find myself avoiding, which doesn't help me. I feel like all i do all day is drink water and tea. It's getting tiring and that discourages me even more. Tomorrow I start smell training, that will make it a week without smell. I truly hope it helps me regain my senses quickly, im not sure how much longer i can take of this. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Hope to remember to update.

It is nice to know that I am not alone in this. Do not worry everyone. We will get through this! It has been a month since I lost my smell and taste. This is probably one of the most depressing things to ever feel. It is like tasting air. I really took my taste/smell for granted. Every single day, I wish for it to come back. I take my vitamins, exercise daily, inhale steam, drink hot ginger lemon tea, and many other remedies. I did all these remedies every single day. Unfortunately, there has been no improvement in my senses and I still have not gotten them back. Furthermore, I had the symptoms of a common cold at the beginning of October. However, those symptoms went away after a week or so. After those symptoms went away, I was left with no smell and no taste. I thought my senses would be back after a day or two but I was wrong. It has been a month and they still have not come back. I have not tried the essential oil remedy, however, I plan to start tomorrow to see how it goes for me. Hopefully, it works well.

I got my taste and smell back after 10 days. The biggest difference came after flushing my nose with salt water mix (take a cup of hot water, mix 1/4 teaspoon of table salt and baking soda and add couple of Carmol drops in. Once the water is cool make your hand into a cup and suck the water in alternating nostrils repeating until you've used all the water. It is gross operation and your nose will feel more blocked for the first half hour but after it feels cleaner than ever before) and using a sinusitis nasal spray. Also doing a steam breathing with hot water mixed with a couple of drops of eucalyptus and sweet birch oil was helpful. Smell training was most useful to check progress. Taste is connected to the nose - it's all about the nose!

I just felt off for a few days, headache being the most prominent issue. Then a tickle in my throat for a few days nothing bad or unmanageable- hurt in the morning but during the day I was fine. Suddenly I had a blocked nose and then I totally lost my taste and smell. I can still taste very sweet or very sour but not to the point where I could identify foods or drinks. Anyone else feeling confused ? This is not listed in official covid-19 symptoms and I thought I had a regular cold. Breathing is normal and no cough or fever.

My brother in law has a confirmed Covid 19 and is hospitalized, he was very very sick, he's much better now. His family, my sister and nieces, all developed cold-like symptoms and then lost their senses of smell and taste, one of them even has hearing problems now. So for sure I know it's a symptom of Covid 19 because my brother in law gave it to them and his case is confirmed. So you're not alone. Just take good care of yourself, stay away from people especially the sick and the old. Drink lots of fluids and eat well. Take deep breaths and don't lay down too much if you start feeling sick. Keep moving and do easy exercises. Be safe!

I lost my sense of smell before Covid. It’s been five years. I’m 69 now. I also can only taste sweet/sour, salty, bitter. I can’t detect any flavors. Can I still benefit from smell training?

@@tobeetwo that’s right I had no tastebuds either just sweet and sour like you. It’s amazing it came back 3 months into doing the sniff tests gradually at first and then totally not long after.I thoroughly recommend it I was sniffing twice a day even though it seemed pointless because you couldn’t smell a thing.Hang in there it’ll be worth it 😊

@@susanbastick2949 Great to hear. I have limited taste, sweet-sour salty-bitter, but no flavors. I worked using pesticide dusts which most likely added to my loss. Can I ask, after you regained smell and taste, did you have to maintain the smell training?? what types of items did you use in your recovery?? I've been using orange and grapefruit peels, and coffee. So far after 1 week, I seem to be recognizing the orange smell. So far nothing on the coffee. What other items can you suggest?? thanks so much...David

@@tobeetwo I’ve still got the little jars with the original flavours in:rose, lemon, clove, eucalyptus and I added another one called petit grain as I could smell this oil in my sisters oil burner.I still sniff them from time to time just to make sure i maintain it,not taking any chances😊
