I think you're not fair about distortion on vocals. Great albums have some kind of effect in the vocals: - Filosofem - Burzum - Suicidal Emotions - Abyssic Hate - Ofte Jeg Drømmer Mig Død - Afsky - The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide, - Leviathan - Telepathic with the Deceased - Xasthur So, future one man band out there, It's ok to use distortion on vocals! Great video, I really enjoy your channel!

It's ok just to shape your vocals a bit. But to use it as a main tool if you can't scream.. not that great

This was really interesting! Knowing about the distortion, eq tweaks and reverb made sense but actually hearing the dry vocal track pre treatment was great because understanding how it sounds at source is also really helpful in recreating this style. 👍👍👍

Wow! The video title was very promising!! I just recently looked all over the internet about the Vargs vocals...but the most interesting part that you skipped..is to how to make this actual vocal without adding distortion, for example the sample that you were working on, was actually quite good!

The vocals on Filosofem are something very special, generally I feel black metal vocals are too exaggerated and sometimes intrusive, but Varg managed to do something that is both haunting and atmospheric. Pardon my pun but it's like a wolf's howling

Next make a video what favorite cereal varg liked along with what brand toilet paper he used .

@@Kaozgoat Filosofem has loads of distortion on both vocals and guitar and that's very obvious, I think also Varg likes to tell this oversimplified take on it that he "just recorded his vocals through some crappy stereo" which seems almost on the same level as the urban legend about Ulver recording Nattens Madrigal in the woods. It's ok for artists to admit they use distortion to make something sound more "lo-fi".

Is anyone else question how the fuck this sounds cool? I would really love to see someone do a breakdown of the psycho-acoustics of black metal. It seems like the atmosphere is all context.

Nice tutorial. I think compression is important unlike you said because otherwise vocals will pierce the ear so much making it unlistenable. Btw compressor did not work due to 1:1 ratio.

The vocals are already clipped and distorted so much that the compressor wouldn't have made too much of a difference anyway

Raspy vocals like Immortal makes me hate black metal. Screaming vocals like Burzum makes me love black metal.

A DAW is a tool like a hammer,you can build a house or a chest with it so yeah, you can record/mix/master BlackMetal with anything, be it Reaper,Cubase,Logic,FL Studio,MagixMusicMaker or Reason

I record my vocals with an normal SM57 microphone. But because I don't have a studio I every now and then take my XLR cable in my old car with me and drive to the countryside or a forrest nearby. And then I just plug it into my fieldrecorder and yell at it while listening my songs via headphones. There's nothing more blackmetal I guess. Than recording your vocal depressed deep at a cold winternight in your car. While your alone appart from human civilisation and the shadows are dancing around you.
