How to get the BEST MPG in your LIFTED 2020 Toyota Tacoma | Does ECT Power work?

In this video I run multiple MPG tests to see what gives you the absolute best MPG in your Tacoma. Trying ECT power and S mode. I also did some 0-60 pulls to see what is the fastest mode as well!

    So for anyone wondering as far as I understand ECT mode is kind of like trailer mode or haul mode so it changes your shift points and with the truck being a little underpowered in its normal gearing the shorter shif points will give it better gas mileage

    The best way that I have found to get better mpg was after I installed a K&N cold air intake, a Flowmaster Flow FX dual exhaust, and an Overland Tailor Tune. My 23 TRD Off Road now has more horsepower, torque and mpg. I was getting 18mpg combined mpg and 21mpg on the highway with the cruise set on 75mpg. I’m now getting 20mpg combined and 24mpg on the highway.

    I just a 2000 mile trip in the mountains of Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Towing 2000 lbs, 15 mpg. Without the trailer I get 19, same highways. Stock size tires, TRD Offroad, 6 ply ATs Mazma tires 3 peak rated. The lift does not matter until you are at highway speeds. What does matter, tire width, height, and weight. 10 ply, E rated a significantly heavier.

    I own 2020 SR5. I looked all over the manual couldn’t find what ECT button did and gave up. Thanks for doing this video. I routinely get 18.5 city combo driving. Goosing then v6 for acceleration seems to kill MPG. I use E15 gas when I can find it and occasionally add 100%. My best is 21.5 on a long trip with 100 gas. Tonneau cover helps too I believe. I also have bigger wheels and tires but not lifted.

    If you are leaving it in s6, it is no different than in drive. In the s mode you can manually shift through the gears or you can lock out some of your top gears. The reason it shows different mpg is because there are way to many variables to get accurate readings in such short distances.

Stay safe man !

    It's hunting for gears because of the axle gear ratio and the larger tires. The Tacoma with the 3.5L has 3.91 axle gearing. If you go with larger tires, you may want to consider regearing to 4.88 gears and that will eliminate the "hunting" for the right gear on the highway.

    Great video! Thank you. For estimation purposes only, if you multiple the distance, gallons and total cost X 10, the cost difference traveling 200miles and spending $23.8 to $25.0 isn't much difference. Per tank, it's only couple bucks or so difference.

  • @tylermainprize1450

    It will always get worse gas mileage with the ECT on because it changes the shift pattern to a more aggressive shift pattern keeping it a higher RPM. I have a shift controller in my truck which makes it even worse gas mileage.

  • @ShikMaTumBA
    @ShikMaTumBA3 жыл бұрын

    HI Rick, at 7:27 when you had that problem with the shifting, it may be due to your gears unable to handle the additional weight of your tires. I have seen a lot of other videos and when you get tires bigger then 31s you are going to need to re-gear your Tacoma, which no lie will be expensive (unless you do it yourself) that should set your transmission back to shifting after 2000 rpms like it usually does and give you back a good highway drive. Not to mention its should give you more low end torque for off-roading.

    @JustTyIer

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@bryank3058 yeah, im sure there's plenty of auxiliary tanks to choose from, but then you're losing space in an already very small truck bed. I'm sure there's smaller tanks you can get, but at that point it may not even be worth the cost of getting it all set up. Like he said, if gas mileage is that important to you, then don't lift it and put bigger tires on it. It's definitely a case by case scenario. I live very close to my job so gas mileage isn't a huge priority for me now but you may be different
