As someone who grew up in a heavily English part of Montreal, your videos are extremely helpful and I wish I had you as a teacher during school! French classes in English schools do not teach what you would learn naturally living in a francophone household or by having French family and friends. @@PaulFernandez24 West Island area ( Pointe-Claire, Kirkland, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, etc) is considered more anglophone - for example, you might see 'STOP' sign on roads rather than 'arrêt'.

Je suis montréalaise et j’adore vos vidéos! Je ne sais pas pourquoi je les regarde vu que je ne fais pas partie du public visé “pantoute” (😉), mais elles sont super claires et j’aime bien lire les commentaires des auditeurs. Une idée de vidéo: le québécois est-il vraiment du français? Pourquoi n’est-ce pas un dialecte? Je lis parfois des gens qui disent qu’on ne parle pas vraiment français et c’est fâchant (d’ailleurs, je ne sais pas pourquoi je trouve cela fâchant… c’est un sujet sensible, j’imagine!)

Géniales vos explications!

Watching this made me realize that I don't have an English accent when I speak French. Makes sense I guess, since I did grow up around people from Québec, as well as having good teachers growing up. This was really interesting to watch though, as I never understood the individual elements that gave my friends their english accents in French until now.

Thank you for this channel you don't know what it means to me!!! I'm obsessed with learning French but the Canadian variety specifically from Quebec!!! But there's just not many resources out there!!! People tell me just learn French and then watch Quebec movies or Radio Canada when you understand but I refuse to learn Parisian French because I don't want to form the bad habit of pronouncing the words in a Parisian/France accent!!! Again thank you, your channel is God sent!!!!

Je me souviens une fois un vendeur de livre sur la rue Cartier a Québec m'a dit de ne jamais perdre mon accent. J'ai trouvé ça tres drôle parce que j'essais tellement de prononcer les mots en français comme il faut!

Je pense que si les gens nous comprennent sans problème, l'accent ne dérange pas (et plusieurs personnes trouvent ça "cute"!). Mais je sais que beaucoup de personnes essaient d'avoir un accent plus naturel, alors c'est ce que j'explique ici! 😊

Quebec French is full of diphtongues but also pure vowels. So a Quebecer for example will pronounce Tokyo or Osaka like a Japanese with a pure vowel unlike many Anglophones. But he will diphtongue the è in père as in old French while using a pure vowel in paix. Canadian French phonology retains all the phoneme of older French and is more complex because of all these diphtongues and even triphthongs. Notice that Hélène also pronounces the short and long a and the short and long è as in older French or dictionary French. French people often mix these up. Hélène never hides the difficulty but has a very nice way of explaining.

Sachant que tu es brayonne... les R sont plutôt prononcé sur le boue de la langue, ce que je trouve merveilleux. Enfin, j'aimerais entendre ton vrai accent car l'accent brayon est mon préféré au NB. Je suis originaire de pas très loin de chez toi d’ailleurs.

Il y a aussi beaucoup plus de voyelles en français, donc c'est difficile de bien les entendre. Bonne chance! Il y a un mot plus « français » pour shaker? Il me semble bizarre s’il n’en existe un

Tu as séparé syllable ainsi: sy-lla-ble, mais en réalité le mot de sépare ainsi: syl-la-ble. On entend d'ailleurs le double l dans la prononciation généralement (cil lable) mais tu sembles vraiment prononcer sylable (si lable)! Mais bref, je trouvais ça comique d'écrire le mot syllable avec les syllables mal séparées ahahah. Évidemment tu n'as pas à le faire mais ça serait bien de le corriger au moins dans les sous-titres étant donné que c'est une vidéo éducative! Mais sinon je trouve tes vidéos très intéressantes même si je ne suis absolument pas ton public cible :p

Haha, merci pour le commentaire! 😊 En fait, dans les sous-titres, j'illustre la prononciation, et non pas la manière d'orthographier le mot. Oui, à l'écrit c'est "syl-la-be", parce qu'on coupe dans la consonne double. Mais à l'oral, le français préfère les syllabes ouvertes, c'est-à-dire qui finissent par une voyelle. On prononce donc "sy-lab".

Your videos are really awesome they're really helping me to learn French. I've been interested in French ever since public school but I kind of fell off the map at high school it's really a shame that the schools here in Canada don't teach fluent bilingualism in both English and French across the entire country I hope someday that changes but for now I love watching your videos to learn how to speak Canadian French thank you so much. Therefore I'd been wondering why till i figured out that to have this connection and feel more confortable we need to really speak their native language the way they speak it.

@@talredgc9809 It is funny that you mention this. I lived in Montréal as a young man. I lived in Sud-Ouest when it was a slum. In my neighbourhood as in most Sud-Ouest neighbourhoods of the time, English was useless. I speak Cajun French. The Cajun dialect is close enough to the Québecois that my neighbours and I had little difficulty understanding each other. My neighbours accepted me immediately. Conversely, when I lived in Italy, I visited France, Switzerland and Belgium frequently. I have family in Switzerland and France. Everyone had a hard time understanding me and I them. I never felt quite the connexion with them as I did to my neighbours in Montréal.

You’re a student. Wouldn’t you want to go for the gusto? Quebec has an interesting culture and you would only see and understand a fraction of what’s going on if you don’t learn any french. And there are tons of people in Quebec, a lot of whom don’t speak english or not well. Anything you do to bridge the gap with even imperfect french will allow you to get close to a lot more people. Then you will truly get to experience a whole different world. Lance-toi et tu verras le résultat. Fortune favours the brave.

J’ai le même problème en espagnol. C’est vrai!

"u" = la pointe de sa langue vers l'avant; "ou" = la pointe de sa langue retirée. Pour prononcer u-ou-u-ou-u-ou, avances ta langue puis retires ta langue à intervals.

Moi j’y suis parce que j’aide beaucoup de monde avec leur français. Quand ils le demandent, évidemment. J’ai appris beaucoup dans votre vidéo. La meilleure astuce est comment bien prononcer le « r ». Je ne savais jamais comment l’expliquer mais me voilà renseigné. Et d’autres aspects de notre prononciation dont je n’étais même pas consciente. Bravo.

Haha, c'est sûr que l'accent peut causer des problèmes dans n'importe quelle langue, même dans notre langue maternelle! Mais dans ce cas, en plus de l'accent, je pense qu'il y a le fait qu'on ne sert pas de beurre avec le pain dans les restos en France... N'est-ce pas? Et de toute manière, il me semble que quand on parle à quelqu'un qui vient d'ailleurs, on essaie de neutraliser un peu notre accent, pour être plus faciles à comprendre! 😊

An English accent in French is by no means a problem: I'd even say it sounds cute, so no need to get rid of it. Conversely however, the French accent is horrible in English.

I have to politely disagree😅. I’m minoring in French and anglos in my classes talk so weird. It’s like they don’t put any effort for the R or the dental T and D. On the other hand, my prof, who is herself Québécoise, has a very cute accent while speaking English.
