How to Get Rid of Stuff You Don't Need » MINIMALISM & Decluttering Tips

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My 4 most important tips for HOW TO GET RID OF STUFF YOU DON'T NEED. The best minimalism & decluttering tips, coming up!
The premise of decluttering your home sounds simple enough. Just get rid of everything you're not using anymore. Or things that don't spark joy. But in reality, decluttering can be difficult. Identifying things to get rid of is one thing, actually making the tough decisions is another. That's why there's so many different decluttering tips and tricks out there, and videos where people show you things to get rid of. Or show you their minimalist lifestyle. And why I make all these videos about how to declutter your home.
That's because things aren't always just things. It's more complex. And in this video, I share my best minimalism tips (that I've learned after about 8 years of minimalist living) for how to get rid of stuff you dont need anymore.
Lots of love,
🌼 Vera

I believe in keeping things I use regularly and like. This Joy story from Marie Kondo is a bit far fetched, I feel. Especially as she opened a shop selling things at exorbitant prices and things we would never use here in central Europe. I have just had a fairly large clean out. Although I live very well and go short of absolutely nothing. Perhaps it is just the great life quality here in Switzerland and great pensions (if one is / was highly educated and spoke say three languages G//F/E and Swiss German). Great tips Vera. Nice to be assured of these points one again. I only buy something now if I need to replace it apart from healthy Bio unpackaged food.

@@sylviacalandriello3270 I think it is mentally related. A fear of maybe insecurity, needing something maybe in the future, or whatever. But cluttering is a deep rooted problem. If I lived with a clutteredr they would not last long in my life. Out they go with all their clutter, but easier if I just left. Then the problem would be solved.

Having grown up below the poverty line, I used to feel extreme guilt in getting rid of personal care products I bought and they simply didn't work for me. I had lotion I bought on clearance in my "poor years" and just got rid of 6 years later. She's absolutely right, getting rid of them meant getting real with myself and telling myself I'm not poor anymore and not to beat myself up.

I keep a cardboard box in the back seat of my car, whenever I see something in my home that I no longer need, I put it in the box, when the box is full, I bring it to the thrift store. My home is 95% decluttered, I actually just donated a collection that was boxed and kept in my guest room closet, everytime I looked at it, it bothered me, but it was worth at least 2k, so I donated it and the profits will help the shelters and the care for cats and dogs, that need a home or medical help.

This is good idea to take pictures. In 2020, I decluttered my grandparents house that inherited. Took me 3 years to start. I went back last weekend and was so happy that there were several items I didn't get around to decluttering. I had stored them in a closet to go through later. It was powerful to touch my grandmother's jewelry; nothing expensive, but necklaces she wore to church that I remember well . For me, I think with some items it might be good to declutter first and then box the remaining with a date on it. This is a strategy I'm going to try, and it may help as a process, especially dealing with items of people who have passed or if one's memory is changing. Even though we know we cannot take it with us and that minimalism has excellent benefits, sometimes it calms our nervous system down to know we have items that jog our memories. ❤ You are doing excellent work in the world @simplyhappyzen. Thank you for being so dedicated and continuing to raise your level of content and growth. 😊

Former IT guy here. I absolutely love the idea of replacing the physical stuff we no longer need (physically) yet keeping a photo of it. Reclaim your physical space! But people, hear me now, and hear me well... ALWAYS MAKE BACKUPS. And keep copies of the backups offsite, preferably several physical sites (or at least a cloud account). When we 'digitize our lives' it's easy to overlook just how instantly a broken hard drive, forgotten cloud-account password, or house fire could instantly wipe out our digital legacy. Naturally, many kinds of physical disasters could do this to our physical stuff too, but it's much, much easier to back up, replicate, and protect digital vs. physical stuff. So there's very little reason not to do it. I've seen people go 100% digital with a lifetime of family photos... then neglect the data, no backups, and lose EVERYTHING just because an inexpensive piece of hardware failed. Don't let that happen to you!

When I began minimalism I was so enthousiast . I declutter so much things than I regret it. I needed the items that I gave out, I missed my clothes. What I would say, decluttering should be a very strategic and planified action, not just because everyone is into it. Because doing things just like anyone, being emotional, after you will regret it. I continue my minimalism journey, but now I am more aware of why I am doing it.

Really enjoyed this side of decluttering...the psychology of why it’s hard. I’ve been decluttering for a while now but still have way too much stuff. I know I have gotten rid of a lot but then I look around and still not happy with what’s left but I can’t seem to go all out and just get rid of things I’m still hanging on to. I’m sure mine stems from coming from a poor family and having very little when I was growing up to now being able to have what I want and not wanting to go back to those memories.

Vera, You’re so on point with the “switcheroo.” We are always thinking about what we stand to lose because we think the thing to be given away is a part of us. I had to train myself to say, “how will getting rid of this improve my life.” I recently came across this aphorism, “Nothing changes if nothing changes.” I’ve heard it said other ways, but I like this one because it’s more poignant. So my point is that we really have to work on changing our thinking when it comes to letting go of stuff, which is exactly what you are saying.😂😁💚

Hey Vera - another great video. Moving this past May was a real eye opener on just how much junk we accumulated over years. In prep for the move, we gave away/threw out a bunch of useless stuff (phase 1) and are trying to avoid buying more random useless items. The next step is to take another pass at it (phase 2) which is to give away/toss more of the useless stuff we didn’t throw out in phase 1. Your bread maker example was spot on and is exactly how we will approach the phase 2 pass on each item considered. Additionally, we will be mindful of the products we buy to ensure that they are 1) absolutely needed 2) purchased locally when possible 3) purchased from countries/companies who treat their employees humanely 4) environmental and 5) quality. Domo Sensei for your continuous inspiration and support on this most important journey of minimalist lives.

3 months is a bit short for many hobbies! Eg for "hiking gear" which you used as an example! .. I don't live in a place where I can hike regularly ... But when I can take holidays.. I go with my kids where we can hike.. But that is only once or twice a year at present, the same applies to camping gear and skiing gear.. Once a year skiing holiday in Winter... Although due to Covid it will be 2 years, which was the same after having my babies (it was 2 years). But I didn't get rid of my really expensive skiing stuff because I knew it was just circumstances and I knew I would do it again.. . So I think for many things you need to have a year! Not quarter of a year as the time line.. And eg longer if it's situation/present circumstances eg having a baby or covid that stops you! So agree with different methods to declutter depending on circumstances!.. I have been decluttering since Jan 17.. When my ex moved out.. Most of first year was separating our stuff and packing his up, 2nd year was the kids.. Due to one needing teenager bedroom and the other a school kids room. Since last year I am finally getting toy stuff.. All takes time as a single working mum!

Thanks for sharing Rebecca and congrats on all the progress you've made!! That's amazing. And I agree with the hobby stuff, the most important question is 'are they still adding value in a real way'. If they're seasonal and you can use them once a year and enjoy them thoroughly, the answer would be to keep them around

Thank you so much for talking about the attachment to memories and items. This is something I have struggled with but have learned to release. My mother-in-law, who I love as my own mother, is a wonderful person but struggles with hoarding. She recently acknowledged that she has held onto items because she lost her mother to cancer as a preteen, and developed attachments to things as a way to supplement memories. We are now decluttering together and it’s a very healing supportive process. Thank you for your kindness and encouragement! ❤️

This video helped me on my journey of minimalism. I declutter an area and maybe a day or week later revisit the same area and feel differently about an item than I did before, ultimately giving it a new home. It may seem silly, but I am learning things about myself as I declutter and become a mindful shopper. Such as, my possessions do not define me. Among other things, you have helped me to learn not to hold onto an item out of guilt and to question why I have an item or want to purchase an item. Thank you so much for your videos.

wow that thing you said about keeping and item that we don't use brings guilt because we keep seeing that item is so true! I never thought about this. In those cases it's better to get rid of it! Might feel guilty to get rid of it but it will be temporary since thst thing will be gone and might even be useful to someone else.

'get real' is so true! i think we take our thought patterns for the truth without even thinking about it, so if we have a thought about something we just assume that's 100% accurate without questioning the thought process. like if you're getting rid of stuff to do with a hobby you don't do anymore, i think a lot of times we assume that means we failed at that or are a bad person, but that's not true! it literally just means that you don't need the stuff for that hobby anymore. your things are not 'you,' no matter how much we feel like it sometimes! im reading mindset by carol dweck right now (HIGHLY recommend and will be making a video about it on my own channel) and this video reminded me of so many of the lessons in there. with a growth mindset, the only thing that defines you is whether you are seeking out challenges & are trying to grow and develop yourself. i think this goes so well with letting items from a past hobby go or feeling like we made a mistake with a past purchase. these things don't define you, the only thing that matters is if you're growing and learning from this. vera you were the first (and only!) person to help me understand how to let things go that we spent a lot of money on and i am seriously so grateful for that! i really wouldn't be in the place i am now with my minimalism if it wasn't for that lesson, so thank you!! edit: wow this is a long comment because i have so many thoughts about this video i love it!! the point about breaking it up is so important!! i think so many people get discouraged by seeing others' super minimalist homes & think that's so far away for them that they don't even start. in these situations i think the mindset 'don't compare your middle to someone else's end' is super helpful! i just love how decluttering has so many parallels with self love & development! thinking about what you gain by letting something go is suchhh a game changer, especially when something is causing you stress or is constantly reminding you that you aren't doing enough (like the bread maker reminding you everyday that you still haven't made bread!) i think the sooner you can embody this mindset the sooner you will feel so much happier everyday! letting go of a scarcity mindset is life changing
