    What they do have going for them is that, when you're in the air, your trajectory is pretty predictable, so seeing where the player was going, they didn't need to see them to track them. I could see that sort of shot being practiced for the clip but I wouldn't put it past a top level charger player or trickshotter to be able to land something like that every now and then.

    I'm brand new to Splatoon as of Splatoon 3 and after unlocking it, I tried out anarchy battles twice with an Aerospray. At the time this was my weapon of choice because I had scored well with it during the Splatfest, not knowing that as a team Rock member I had teammates who were doing really great with zoning and applying pressure to the opposing team and I was merely scoring the highest points because I often stayed back and just made sure turf was being painted. I refused to use any other weapon because I wasn't comfortable with the controls yet, which was fine to begin with but would soon become a detriment because I became guilty of walk and shoot as well as tunnel vision due to not understanding how other weapons worked. I would also get a lot of splats with my reefslider but was horrified when players began cancelling my slider when I tried using it as a panic button later into the game's launch once people began to realize better how the new specials worked. Anyway, I lost both matches of Tower Control that I attempted to do and felt really bad for my teammates so I stopped doing ranked battles and shamefully retreated into Turf Wars again to figure out what I was doing wrong. I did a lot of introspection and watched pro level players playing ranked even though I still had no idea what was going on, and just tried picking up a few of the things they would do; jumping while shooting, retreating into their ink often, using bombs to back enemies off, and not running into a fight head on. Additionally, I finally tried out a bunch of different weapons, I had only unlocked 3 by level 11 and had a bunch of Sheldon tickets so I would just buy a weapon and do a few battles with it, lose horrifically and then try another one. What this did I don't think I expected; I thought I was finding the weapon best suited for me, but I was also scouting out ways enemies countered me and was able to employ those counters on those weapon types down the line as well. I discovered what ranges weapons have and also their weaknesses. Once I was able to consciously do these things, my movement controls just naturally started improving because I wasn't getting splatted at every turn. So far I have settled on using the Tetra Dualies and began averaging about 10 splats per session of turf war. I am nervous to jump back into ranked but watching this series I think I might be capable of getting into A rank. In fact, during the first two videos I realized that the things you said were the exact observations I was making, and I learned only a couple new things. This video taught me a majority of new things, so that's why I think I could reasonably climb to A rank. Retrospectively, my matches that went well are matches when I employed what you discussed here unconsciously while the matches that went poorly were ones where I lost my temper and made rash moves. It felt super validating when you said that you learn to see and observe first before you learn the movement well. The biggest jump in performance I saw was when I started observing more and was semi-consciously paying attention to things like fire rate/range and zoning. For instance, I learned that if I shoot at a roller while dodge rolling backwards with the tetra dualies, I would Splat them first 100% of the time since most lower level rollers keep trying to plow forward at me in a blind panic while the ones who knew what they're doing would fling paint at me and retreat. At first I struggled with Flingza Rollers for this reason until I decided at one point to try flanking them from behind using ninja squid, and it worked! I later taught this to my roller main friend who mentioned they were having trouble with dualie users, and they started flinging paint at longer range weapons and checking behind themselves more and it made me feel really proud to have made this discovery. Meanwhile, I learned I was never able to splat any splatling users, and now that you've mentioned things like fire rate, fire distance, and flanking, I have a few new strategy ideas for how to actually deal with splatlings, such as using bombs to displace them and taking that chance to splat. I also had no idea that getting CLOSER to a high range but low fire rate weapon would give me an advantage but it totally makes sense! These two scenarios I've been in recently suddenly make a lot more sense: one time I accidentally dodge rolled forward into a roller and got splatted, I DID realize what I had done wrong when doing this, but because of this instance I was terrified of rolling closer to any enemies who were firing at me. I kept wanting to apply the same backwards and shoot tactic to *all* weapons. In the second scenario I was of course tryinh to employ the backwards rolling technique with a splattershot and they splatted me first and I just brushed it off as unlucky. But now I've realized. I have a shorter firing distance than that splattershot, but a higher fire rate especially after a dodge roll and I believe slightly higher damage. If I had advanced forward on them, I would have gotten the splat. Evidently this is what I've done accidentally in certain matches when I panicked and started rolling around at random and happened to get lucky and splat the also panicking enemies, but now I can employ this intentionally. For chargers and splatlings, which I had no idea going into this video how to deal with, I could try flanking and retreating and using bombs for displacing them into my firing range more, which I have never done intentionally but a couple times on accident in a panic. Like I was using my autobombs to get enemies to back off but then they would wait for my bomb to explode and then just come up behind me for a splat. I never though of throwing a bomb to get a splatling to stop firing, then since they need to charge their next shot I can take the chance to roll in and take my shot. None of these things came to me in an intentional thought pattern but now that you've outlined them like this, it makes a lot of sense why I was succeeding and failing in the areas that I was, I think the dualies came the most naturally to me only because I understood using s with dodge rolling from previous single player games that I've played before. And while I've consistently been winning recently and finally toppled my win to loss ratio (28 to 20, still not great but doing better because my wins are outweighing my losses which means I am finally the common denominator in my own success) I still have a LOT to learn and I appreciate your videos immensely! (I especially appreciate that part where you showed the charger routine, so I feel less stupid about repetitively dodging and shooting between the two moving targets in the lobby and hoping it does actually contribute to my improvement lol)

    Super helpful videos! I’m currently in A rank on most modes and found your series from a link on Reddit after suffering a frustrating round of losses. I’ve been feeling stuck in my rank for a long time, but I’ve been watching and rewatching these videos this week and working on changing my mindset and it’s really helping me do better! Instead of getting frustrated when I die or lose a round, I’m starting to look critically at what I could do better, as well as see what my opponent is doing right. I’ve identified many opponents who walk and shoot or are laser focused on the objective and I’ve been able to take them out. I’m focusing on retreating more and playing more defensively. It’s going quite well and is way less frustrating now that my mindset is changed.

    Something I want to say is a section of the zoning discussion isn't zoning but rather another concept called map control. Zoning is the use of cover and the range of weapons, bombs, and movement to pressure or kill another player. Map control is a more nebulous concept in most games of areas where your team has knowledge of what's in an area or has a space advantage in the area. (regularly checking the area. A player being in a snipers nest or with available cover. having two players in a choke when they know only one enemy could appear.) In splatoon map control is taught early by inking turf but the idea is a lot more complex.

    @@shieldsurf Feeling frustrated at what seems like a lack of improvement is a pretty universal experience in competitive games. Everyone feels like they hit plateaus. Sometimes they're real, and other times their improvement is gradual enough that they're just not noticing it's happening. Don't worry about improving slower than your friends or anyone else; I know that's easier said than done, but unless you have something to learn from the way they're practicing and improving, worrying about not improving fast enough isn't helping and so there's no reason to do it. If you write down a quick, short list of the goals you're trying to focus on and then rate how well you did at reaching those goals after every game, it helps a lot to focus your attention on exactly what needs to be fixed the most. Don't get me wrong, seeing our numbers go up on KZread Analytics gives me happy brain chemicals, but it might be more helpful for you to make a quick list of what you're working on instead of trying to rewatch and remember an entire KZread video's worth of information every game!

The zones youre drawing on the screen dont seem to apply to any of the players. im assuming the circle near the E-Liter is their zone of control, yet their charger's laser far exceeds that circle. The circle near Gem's inkling also seems a bit off center for what its purpose serves. Every zone of control pointed out on the screen before this timestamp made relative sense, but then from this point forward im lost. I'm quite late, but the way I interpretted it is that the circle near the charger represents the control that their teammates have (so the brush and the nzap) gem mentions here "they start off in a strong position because they have teammates controlling the area around them" the circle near gem would represent gem's control. I don't know why it's off center either lol. 10:51 is what I'm assuming youre referring to with the green circle, around the brush. it refers back to the first green zone - the nzap went down, so now it's only the brush's range of control, and the charger isn't as safe anymore (so they go down moments later).

    i know this is 2 years later but i think i am the perfect example of doing the same thing over and over again does not get you better at the game. i started splatoon 2 in early 2021 and a month later got to A+. i got stuck in A+ and thought "if i keep going eventually i will get out of A+" i have now been playing for over 800 hours, my E-liter ( the weapon i used ) has a MILLION turf inked and after that year and a half i am still in A+. please, do not do the same thing again and again if you wish to get better, i litterally got stuck in A+ for over a YEAR (and i still am) due to that horrible assumption. I was stuck in A+ for SO LONG a sequel to splatoon 2 is coming out in a week. I really hope i will not get stuck in A+ in splatoon 3, that would really suck Edit: just noticed a typo

    Hi, I'm a pretty good S/A+ Splatoon 1 player thinking about getting Splatoon 2. What would you consider to be the most important differences between the two games? Also would you guess if it worth it getting the game if I'm going to be this late to the party? (I know it's impossible to tell how things will pan out after Splatoon 3 but I would like to know how other people are feeling)

  • @SquidSchool

    I (Gem) have played Splatoon 1 for 2 hours total, so I'm not the one who can answer that question for you. As far as whether it's worth it to get into it now, my guess is that it will still be another year or so before Splatoon 3 is released (inb4 I regret making this prediction when E3 happens next week and I get told I'm wrong). A year is a long time when it comes to learning a game, and the hours players put into Splatoon 1 carried over well into Splatoon 2. If you want to be able to hit the ground running in Splatoon 3, I'd say it's worthwhile. There are more people playing Splatoon 2 and there are more resources available for learning it, so I'd rather be learning this game right now than focusing on Splatoon 1 if I'm trying to get ready for number 3.

    Hi there, I played Splat 1 for a long time and finally got Splat 2 a year ago. There’s a new ranked mode called clam blitz and co-op mode called salmon run. Also, all of the specials are different and it took me time to understand their nuances (They’re not as op). Two new weapon classes- dualies and brellas. There are lots of other differences but those are some of the big ones :) Def worth getting, with my splat 1 experience I quickly made S+ which seemed impossible for me in the first game. ALSO IT DOESNT LOWER YOU FOR DISCONNECTS MOST IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE !!!!

The controllers work fine until they break like that; I recommend a pro controller if you're in a financial position to be able to get one, not because they work better necessarily but because they break less.

  • @SquidSchool

    @SquidSchool

    3 жыл бұрын

    The splat brellas definitely aren't bad in theory. Rain and bomb rush are both great specials for the brella to have, given that it'll be supporting the frontliners and painting a good amount. The main problem with them is that if there's any latency, chances are you're going to get shot through your shield sometimes, which is something a lot of people don't like putting up with. The undercover brella is one of the weakest main weapons in the game at higher levels, but the kensa undercover's sub weapon and special are good enough that it's still playable. The sorella kit isn't bad, though it's not as well suited to it. The vanilla undercover brella is probably my argument for the single worst weapon in the whole game, having a main weapon that splats very slowly, a sub weapon that doesn't do lethal damage, and a special that, at higher levels, is likely to just get you shot out of the sky. That's probably the one weapon out of all these brella variants I would suggest someone reconsider.

    @@BJ86491 On this particular file it didn't take long, but that's because this is the second time I've done it. I was A rank back in mid 2018, and at the time I wasn't thinking about playing competitively and wasn't really paying so much attention to how long it took me to make it out and whatnot. Don't worry too much about age. Esports is a big equalizer for this sort of thing; there have been world's best Smash players that were 14 or 15 years old. A lot of top Splatoon players are in the 16-19 range. There are also strong veteran players in their upper 20s. Getting better isn't just about putting hours into the game; it's also about practicing effectively/efficiently, trying to actively figure out what needs to change. If you wanted, I would be happy to have you on Squid School sometime and maybe try setting you up with some goals to track if you're having trouble seeing what to set your sights on and work toward.

Make sure to let me know what your tag is because my friends list is always full and I need to delete people to add new ones, so if I don't recognize your tag I probably won't accept the request. "I can have assurance that I am somewhat average at the game" Don't try to define yourself as "good" or "bad." Those words don't mean anything in this context. If you worry about meeting a goal that isn't defined very clearly ("being good at the game") you're never going to be sure whether you've met that goal or not, so you're always going to be worried that you're actually "bad" (whatever that means) and it'll hurt your confidence. If you're only comparing yourself to someone in X rank then yeah, you're probably going to be a weaker player, but you could easily still be in the better half of all of the people who play the game.

    That sort of thing happens to top level X rank players because they're running out of players that can go even with them and end up primarily in games they're predicted to win. It can feel frustrating sometimes, but I think a lot of that comes from the fact that, when that happens, we're less likely to remember that we won +30 and +25 a couple games ago. Breaking into S/S+ does take some adjustments. Players are going to be aiming better, moving better, and playing smarter than you've been used to. It may seem like you're hitting a brick wall, but keep at it. If you pay attention to what the higher rank players are doing that the lower rank players aren't, you can learn a lot and start making progress again. It'll also probably take some practice aiming and moving better, which you'll get along the way from playing ranked anyway. Here's another video request: How to defeat a dualies. When a player is able to rapidly change positions while firing, how are you supposed to hit them? To me, the dualies are the most unfair weapons in the game as they destroy the whole idea of positioning which is supposed to be what the game is all about. Usually, I can tip my cap when I lose a duel, but when I lose to a dualies I feel cheated. Seriously, what idiot at Nintendo thought this weapon was a good idea?

  • @SquidSchool

    @SquidSchool

    3 жыл бұрын

    What if I told you a shooter can actually change its position faster than dualies can? If you stop firing as soon as you notice you're missing your shots and swim a short distance then press ZR again, you'll be able to start firing again faster than the dualies can. You won't go as far, but it'll be far enough to throw your opponent's aim off. They can only reposition with rolling twice or maybe four times if they're tetras before they're just locked in place. You can do this as many times as you need. Another answer to dualies is to use range advantage; if you have a nautilus or a kpro or a bamboo or a rapid blaster or even just a weapon with a burst bomb or something, just don't approach enemy ink close enough that a dualies can get on top of you and kite them if they try.

    I dont know why this man capitilized the a, but sure, whatever. Here's my strategy. Winning enough battles to get into another rank thats higher, or losing enough to get into another rank thats lower.

    Nah, I think stick is underrated, in my opinion, I can’t aim for nothing when it comes to motion meanwhile im amazing with sticks! Is there any other stick people here!?

    I use sticks, managed to get up to S+ in a few modes. Can't really use motion because the controller I use (a type of pro controller) is wired and can't support it, plus using motion on Joy cons has always felt too awkward. The main issue with sticks is the aiming, so I prefer to use weapons that aren't primarily focused on crack shot aiming, like chargers. It is an uphill battle sure, but it isn't impossible, as many players have gotten up to X rank that use sticks. It just is more of a minority when compared to motion, so it requires you to think outside the box a bit.

    @@bigtroll8915 Right?! Everyone is always like STICKS OR DIE! But it doesn’t really matter, sure it’ll take longer but as long as your playing how u wanna play, DO IT

    @@---DJ--- I have to agree with you there, it doesn't really matter, just let people play however they want to, and if some amount of extra work has to be put in, well so be it. As I said before, getting X rank and higher is definitely possible, just a bit more tedious. With that said, I do think that (for Splatoon 3 at least) there should be some extra amount of stick control support. Perhaps aiming assist or something.

    @@bigtroll8915 YES. Aim assist would NOT be broken because snipers can still just 360 no scope in less than 10 milliseconds, but there should be some buffing at least

    Switch right now. I checked a couple of posts before I switched and a good tip I saw was to use the sticks for large movements and motion for precise ones. So adjust your sensitivity according to that. Then you can play salmon run and turf war if you're scared of losing your rank [which is not that important imo ... stressful + discourages you from trying new plays in fear of losing ... just not a good learning environment if you're bothered by rank, and you can always regain it :P]
