Clam Blitz is a unique game mode in Splatoon 2 that's often misunderstood and misplayed. This video is a guide ranging from the C-rank basics of the mode to X-rank team coordination strategies that will hopefully make the mode less frustrating and more enjoyable for you.

    It's so rare to see a Splatoon video where the video content is actually relevant to what's being discussed. I know how difficult it can be to find and/or create relevant footage so I don't wanna be too hard on other creators. However, it just makes it that much more commendable that these and other videos meet this standard. I think one missing section is an explanation of overtime. I've been playing Clam Blitz since the mode was released and I'm still sometimes surprised when my games enter overtime. Either way, this is a very well-made video that very effectively communicates its ideas.

    Maybe it's for the best that we didn't cover overtime, because it changed in a patch since this video was made. Overtime can happen if the losing team still has a power clam when the timer reaches 0. The game will end if: -The winning team scores during overtime, either with a power clam to open the basket or small clams into a basket opened before overtime triggered. -The losing team opens the basket during overtime and fails to take the lead before the basket closes, the game ends -A certain amount of time goes by without either team scoring (it's a pretty short amount of time; the losing team basically needs to just hold forward and sprint to the basket to have a chance; this used to be much longer) -The losing team takes the lead

    @@SquidSchool This first condition makes it seem that, when you're on the winning team, holding on to a clam, when you know overtime is coming up, is a smart move. With this (and the basket open into overtime, of course), you can instantly end the overtime through scoring, instead of having just three more points that the losing team would have to overcome to take the lead. Am I right?

    @@spysoldierscout4562 Absolutely! If you're not about to just KO and the basket is open just before time runs out, just shark and hide with that one clam so you can end the game right away as soon as overtime triggers.

    If I remember right, the penalty assessed when the basket closes is basically just 1/2 the points that were scored since the basket last opened. So in that example, the +30 penalty that was assessed? Well, it was three power clams, at 20 points each, so 60 points went in, penalized half that amount. You'll even have your penalty increased if you score but can't clear the penalty. Say you get first break with three power clams, taking the score from 100 down to 40. Basket closes, penalty makes it 40 (+30). You then come back and open again with a single power clam. Score is now 40 (+10). Basket closes. You scored 20, so another 10 on the penalty brings you to 40 (+20).

    Forgive me if I’m wrong, but I thought it was the number of individual clams put in. What I mean is there are 10 individuals in a power, os it gives a 10 penalty. If you score 3 individual clams for 9 points, it’ll only give you a 3 penalty(if I’m right). I may just be going on a bit of a rant for nothing, but since people may see this I thought I would put in my belief. However, your rule applies for power clams only.

    This mode used to seem to hard for random rank matches but now I think one person using "this way" and basic strategy can give your random team an advantage. Thx

    5:45 I've been noticing in my clam blitz games and in these two clips, that the penalty doesn't always add up by how close you are to winning. Instead, Majority of the time, the penalty adds up based on how many clams are thrown into the basket. When you throw a power clam to the basket, the penalty adds up 10 points since a power clam is made out of 10 clams. When you throw individual clams, the penalty adds up by a point each. So it's nice to keep in mind that if you have a penalty of +40, that can be dropped to half it's amount with 2 power clams because that only costs a penalty of +20 clams. It's also nice to use two separate pushes (first to use a power clam or two in order to drop the penalty, then second to actually score points and get lead). People should keep in mind that based on the amount of clams they have and the state of the game, they should decide whether to save it for a different push or throw all individual clams into the basket since individual clams both score more points and add less penalty.

    yeah, another commenter pointed this out but the "closer to winning" wording is only correct if the push starts from 100. If a team makes one really strong push and then one really weak push, the weak push won't have as large of a penalty even though the team is really close to winning.

    I'm having such a hard time with clam blitz. I played a bunch of turf war casually in splatoon 2. And now in splatoon 3 I'm messing around in c rank and having fun, trying to learn and get better. I have an ok grasp on tower control and splat zones. But for some reason clam blitz is really hard for me

    I believe the Ultra Stamp is another good special in this mode because it can spread out your opponents while at the same time make a path for your teammate with the power clam.

    Here’s a List of “Problems in Clam Blitz” I have and the Reasons behind them… 1: “Finding a Clear Opening and Clear Shot to the Enemy Basket”: while being scattered and me in possession of a Power Clam - obviously you’re Labeled if you have it - I have to Run Around, only then No Opening - and I get Chased. 2: “Opposing Team “Overrun” “: When searching for Clams, checking the map - the opposing team has more ink turf than you do… you want to stop it or attempting to Stop an Overturf or “Overrun” - it backfires against me drastically, and once I’m pushed back to base and the opposing team keeps you at bay at your base or the basket - it’s Over. - which BREAKS and completely confuses your Role and Change at the last minute. 3: “Role Confusion or Last-Minute Role Change”: I learnt the “3 Roles” - Frontliner - Midliner - Backliner - finding what your Role is while getting Clams - then change Role if all else fails, like the Overrun and go from Frontline to go the Backliner to keep them from scoring too much. 4: “Particular Clam Blitz Maps” : I have HUGE PROBLEMS in two Maps which feature Clam Blitz - being “Pirannah Pit” and “Golby Arena” - they SUCK.

    Small trivia if anyone cares : In the Beta of the CB mode you actually had to take the claims into your basket, Every so often a casket full of claims would spawn (it's location was based on who was loosing since it would spawn closer to the loosing team) Whomever got to the casket first had to bring the claims back to the basket at one's own spawn and score over there. I wonder how the comp would've taken it if it was kept in this beta state

    It makes a lot of sense to have to push into your opponent's base because it's way easier to get back to your own base. You would basically get one chance to stop them in mid, maybe a second chance if someone has a stingray, and otherwise as soon as someone peaces out with clams there's no stopping them from scoring. I feel like high mobility weapons like brushes would be extremely strong

    I find Clam Blitz to be the most frustrating of the ranked modes. It really requires coordination between teammates, and it's very hard to do this without voice chat.

    I actually think that "it requires coordination" is a point I disagree with. If you're painting, not getting splatted, and picking up clams, the most that has to happen to score is you throw clams at the person who has the most and then you can just do your own thing to get as many points in as you can. I think Rainmaker actually requires more coordination in most cases, because you really need people to be pushing ahead of the Rainmaker where the Rainmaker wants to go; it's a power clam holder that also doesn't have subs specials or a good main weapon, so it's even more dependent on its teammates. The thing about Clam Blitz is that many players join their first ranked matches without knowing anything about how to play the game. Bad experiences with players making obvious misplays taints people's perception of the mode from then on. I think a better tutorial for the game mode in Splatoon 3 would fix most of people's problems with it.

    @@SquidSchool I really struggle with Clam Blitz, and I can't put my finger on exactly why. I've only reached S+ once and I struggle to even stay in S. Are there any other things besides what's in your video that you think of that players struggle with in this mode? I really could use some ideas.

    @@galactica1981 The tips about awareness and understanding advantages from the S+ video are usually what are lacking here. If you don't pay attention to a power clam as soon as its made and keep constant tabs on its position, make sure to do that. If you don't pay attention to how many clams both teams have, do that. If you aren't paying constant attention to who has numbers advantage and where your teammates are, do that.

    I've had pretty good success with collecting 7 clams (used to be 9 in splatoon 2) and they only picking up the last one when you're near the basket to score... also getting a super clam and then super jumping to a teammate nearer to the basket
