How to get motivated even when you don’t feel like it

Explore the psychology of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and dig into how these forces contribute to our drive.
--
Motivation is complicated. Psychologists define motivation as the desire or impetus to initiate and maintain a particular behavior. But sometimes, no matter how passionate you are about a goal or hobby, finding the motivation to actually do it can be difficult. Why is motivation so fickle? Explore intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and dig into how these forces contribute to our drive.

it's important to note that if you have forms of mental illness or neurodivergence, your executive functioning and thus motivation to do nearly anything can be severely inhibited to the extent of it being debilitating. sometimes having the energy to simply eat lunch or watch a show you love just doesn't exist. to anyone who does struggle with it, i wish you good luck, there are ways to cope and you will be okay

@@ToraAnbu well, sometimes the problem needs to be raised first in order for people to find solutions. Step 1: accomplished, let's get onto Step 2 and 3: Find solutions and Execute solutions. I've heard a lot of people recommending changing diet and exercising to be successful solutions too!

As a Personal Trainer this resonates strongly! I read that over time, your motivation changes as the task becomes a bigger part of your identity. If you see yourself as a "gym person", you're more likely to go. If you pride yourself on doing the laundry on time, you're more likely to do the laundry. So if you can stick at your new habit for long enough, it might actually become easier to motivate for it :)

I rarely comment, but I feel compelled because this hits close to home. Finding the motivation to do things is the hardest thing for me and unfortunately I have an unhealthy tendency of procrastinating. My biggest hobby is writing and I'd love to become an author one day, but my depression takes away all of my energy and motivation, even for the things I actually enjoy. It's frustrating because then I procrastinate and end up doing nothing and yet I feel constantly tired and frustrated at the whole situation. I hope I can tame my depression enough for my motivation and my energy to increase more frequently.

You often end up going beyond that because starting is the hard part, but once you do, the momentum keeps you going. Edit: I mixed up the definition of the "2-minute rule" (which states that if a task will take about 2 minutes, just do it now"). But I think the principle above still stands.

Each of these things requires a different kind of motivation, but I don’t always manage to maintain it for a long time after encountering difficulties. Sometimes it might feel like there is an emotional barrier or discomfort when you think about a goal. Something that might help the process, would be to allow or embrace the sensation of that discomfort. Generally, allowing it can help it to dissipate. To then get back to a more content state. Like amor fati, or radical acceptance, or Jocko saying, "...grrrrooood," by observing and allowing the literal physiological sensations of the emotion to pass by. If you can help it

for years i've wanted to change my body shape, without doing anything about this. i finally cracked this problem by changing my goal. I defined the goal instead as being someone who goes to the fitness studio with their fitness clothes every day. That's all i need to do. The fitness studio is right next to my job. I just need to go there. I don't actually need to do anything when i'm there to fulfill my goal. However, when i've got there i find that uptil now, i've always done something, rather than just turning around. however, if i didn't do anything that would be ok too. By defining my goal as "i'm someone who goes to the fitness studio with my fitness clothes every work day" i turned it into something that is easy to achieve and also something that i could say that i am after the first day of doing it. It is no longer some nebulous distant goal but rather something that i am already achieving.

One thing about Motivation I have a problem with, is when I (FINALLY) get the Motivation to do something, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, someone else needs my attention or needs me to do something else or do it another day when everyone else is more ready to do it with you (if you're in a team). Then when you get that alone time to do it, the motivation is gone. These past several years, I've had one of these problems a few times. It just sucks the motivation out of you when it's as if the Universe is putting annoying walls in the way. Not Obstacles or Hurdles, just walls.

When there are so many reasons why something is worth doing (there's extrinsic and intrinsic motivations) it becomes like there's too much pressure. So that over justification part makes sense to me. So if you already like doing something AND it's good for you, it's better just to focus on having fun. I need a video about motivation and depression though.

@@ashsridharan You gotta try your best to better your situation. If you are poor and hungry food stamps and free food is available. If you are homeless shelters are available. You gotta have faith that things will get better because thoughts manifest into reality. Take some time to recognize what matters to you and how you can take steps to make your life better. A question that always helped me was “how would I take care of someone else dealing with my situation” and then I’d treat myself that way. Also it’s ok to ask for help.

you have just mentioned motivation is the energy to do something. that's why literally lack of motivation can be due to lack of physical energy that will able you to do the thing not always for psychological reasons. that is why at first it is important to view yourself and know if you are burnt out physically too and try to rest to restore your energy as sometimes mental effort affects your physical energy and vice versa.
