    I love how realistic you guys are! A lot of KZreadrs who blog about law school sugar coat everything, I love that you guys are so real. You're straight-forward and honest, which is better than convincing us we can get into Harvard Law with a 148 LSAT and a 2.3 GPA. This helped me out so much, and it gave me the ambition to really kick it into gear (I have 5 semesters left)

    It definitely is ignorant and very narrow-minded of you to think that those numbers would warrant an immediate denial of admission for a specific candidate. People are so much more than the numbers that represent them and admissions officers know this. There's a difference between sugarcoating the process making it seem as if it's nothing to worry about and then actually talking about numbers that might discourage people but reassuring them that there is more factors and more of a holistic process to an application's review.

    I know someone at Georgetown who applied with a 2.4 and got in. Why? Because their personal statement and work ethic absolutely drowned out any denial or skepticism of future success for them in law school. Don't think that your 3.4 and excellent LSAT are going to get you into law school if your personal statements and diversity statements are weak. That's a major misconception.

    @@vjeff777 Totally agree. There are good videos by actual Consultants that talk about this. Both are on the Spivey Consultant site. One of the videos was by Mike Spivey who talks about a regular guy (not especially interesting or compelling back story) got into a Top 5, with below median LSAT and GPA. It had to do with the "soft" factors. I think this video is called, "Characteristics of Applicants who Succeed above their Numbers" or something like it. The other is a Spivey video from a former Harvard Law School admissions director who also talks about this. Yes, in general, you cannot expect to get into a school with below median GPA/LSAT...but it's overstating it QUITE A BIT to say, "You won't get into that school," as they said here. There are exceptions...even for someone pretty "ordinary." Get more information!

    Hi Britanny! I stumbled onto your 'A day in the life of a lawyer in NY' by chance when I was trying to search for a video about think tank employees. I just finished this video, and it's extremely helpful! It's funny because I'm an undergrad right now in San Diego, studying political science, and hope to go to law school. It's such a coincidence too because I'm a junior right now, trying to decide if I should go straight to law school( in which case, I should start taking LSAT prep classes) or work in a think tank for a bit. I was wondering if you could share some tips about how much extra curriculars matter in terms of applying to law school. I fear I might be overwhelming myself quite a bit right now, and wouldn't want that load to affect my GPA. And also if you don't mind me asking, where did you go for undergrad, and what sort of extra-curriculars were you a part of? I'm at a crossroads right now, and it's hard deciding!

  • @BrittanyTran

    @BrittanyTran

    5 жыл бұрын

    I would say work at a think tank first. it gives you some real world experience and will help you to rest a bit from school before going into law school. extra curriculars definitely help but the most important are GPA and LSAT so I would focus on those first. work experience does help too though :) and maybe your think tank experience will help you with letters of recs and essays.

    a. Law school cares little about your major. They care about your GPA/LSAT and the quality of the classes you took. So if you don't like your current major, choose one that truly interests you AND will set you up for success in a field other than law in case you want to work xyz years before applying to law school. Choose your major based on employment outcome and true interest rather than law school admissions. b. a little side-note: If you want to be a patent agent, you must come from a STEM background to sit for the patent bar exam. areas like intellectual property, tech/infromation law or tax requires a STEM background or strong quantitative skills.

    hi from Turkey! I am currently studying MIS(Management Information Systems) in Boğaziçi University. I would like to apply to law schools in US when I graduated. This is my 2nd year and I failed all my courses this semester. Next semester I am planning to fix them but still those F's will remain on my transcript :( is it a problem when I apply to law schools if I do well on LSAT and increase my gpa? Do law schools look at my transcript when I apply? Thanks.

  • @BrittanyTran

    I'm not sure how it works for international schools but yes they will look at your transcripts. it depends which law school you are trying to get into and if you meet the GPA or not. I'm sure they will look at overall GPA but they may look into specific classes and what grades you get.

    US law schools don't factor foreign GPA into their 509 reports. So whatever your GPA is won't affect their reported "median" UGPAs. Just make sure your GPA is decent, and work towards the lsat....for foreign-educated applicants...lsat is the single most important statistic.

    What are your thoughts about online law programs? Will that limit doors?

  • @BrittanyTran

    @BrittanyTran

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don't know much about online law programs but from what I can tell and know, online programs don't hold the same prestige as regular in person programs. For example, if a law firm had to decide between someone that went to NYU law school versus an online program, NYU would still be preferable. I don't know the further down you go the rankings if maybe a no-name third tier law school would be the same as an online law program. However, if you also just want the degree and are confident you'll be able to pass the bar exam you might not need to go to a prestigious law school. I'm sure there are still job opportunities (they just might be a bit harder to get or you might not be able to work at a top tier law firm).

    So, you both sound like you had brilliant applications and experience, although you got waitlisted and rejected to a few schools. That makes me a little uneasy because my resume does not sound as nearly as experienced as yours and I only had maybe 3 schools in mind... So, I'm questioning my chances at getting in... Why do you think you did not get in to the schools you applied to? Like, do you regret adding or not adding something onto your application or was it your score or was it just the school's random decision? I'm so nervous!

  • @BrittanyTran

    @BrittanyTran

    6 жыл бұрын

    hi kayla! have you already applied? I would recommend applying to schools in all ranges (safety, reach etc.) because you just never know. for me, I was too ambitious thinking I could get into a school that I didn't at least meet the 50th percentile because of my experience and/or essay but to be honest if you're LSAT or GPA are not at least meeting the 50th percentiles then your chances of getting in are very low. There are different factors but LSAT and GPA are the main ones and then if you're on the fence, a good essay or experience may push you over.

    you take the LSAT when you are in college so you have plenty of time. Most people take it the summer before their senior year of college or during the beginning of their senior year of college. It's 4 years of undergrad (college) and then you apply to law school while in college.

    a very small percentage of people enrolled in law school as young as 19. But you must have an undergraduate degree first. If you are willing to work hard, you can finish your undergrad in three years, go straight to law school, and have your summer associate job the first(hard to pull off) or second summer during your law school years.

    yes, most people take it their junior or senior year before applying to law school since you need it for admission. but it depends on when you plan on going to law school.

    not unless you are already going down that path. I'm not sure why you would waste more time and money on becoming a paralegal if you want to become a lawyer. you might as well start off right away going to law school, taking the bar etc.

    From what I've heard, being a lawyer is not a glamorous job. So what is with all the applicants. 160K debt, troublesome application process, high study loads, sacrifice, no job guarantee, nasty peers. DO people think a college degree is a magical pass to earn money or something?

  • @BrittanyTran

    a lot of people have this thought that being a lawyer is very prestigious and you make a lot of money. it's like being a doctor, lots of people have heard of it and know of it so they assume it's what they want to do when they're growing up.

    Hi, did either of you get off of the waitlist for the schools you were waitlisted at? I know you didn't attend those schools, but did they eventually offer you admission? I am waitlisted at my top two choices and don't know if I should be holding on to hope.

  • @BrittanyTran

    @BrittanyTran

    I got into 2 of the schools I was waitlisted for. You really have nothing to lose except your deposit and assuming your top two choices are higher ranked than the schools you got into, it's worth waitlisting in the rare chance you'll get in. I would say though, don't put too much hope that you'll get in because it's really a toss up.

    I have to argue with you Brittany about how your LSAT and GPA are the most important factors in getting accepted to law school. Yes I do believe the "numbers" are important, and if you have low GPA/LSAT you will have a harder time getting into a law school, especially a top tier one. Numbers at the end of the day are just numbers because I know people with a high LSAT/GPA get rejected from law school. Did you know that Ted Bundy the serial killer got into law school even though he had a low GPA/LSAT? He got into law school because he had great LORs where his professors believed he was really capable of being a law student. Theres a saying,"He who represents himself, has a fool for a client." His professors represented him so well to a point of being accepted. Another example, there was an ex bank robber named,"Shon Hopwood" who went to UW law. Can you believe they accepted an ex-bank robber? Now he is a lead professor at Georgetown. It's not always about the numbers, you got to have an amazing personal statement which overides the numbers. You have to show the admission committee on why you really want to study law that particular law school, not just because I have a 180 LSAT and 4.0 GPA. You have to work with your recommendation to show why you really want to study law what they can do to show why you should be an accepted student. Does your LSAT really matters once you get accepted? Its just like the SATs where once your in college, it doesn't matter anymore. Maybe your GPA in law school and your class rank because some law firms only accept the top rank students. Of course Asian people always think that its all about the numbers. The numbers at the end of the day are just numbers. Go be different, write your personal statement to be different and unique compared to everyone else.

    With due respect, we all think we are special and in fact, we all are. So no matter you are a 150, 160 or 170 lsat... you're gotta have some pretty special PS and Resume and amazing experience. So in the end, numbers are still the differentiating factor
