it's because those who apply for iit are student btw 65% and 99% Mark's, but those who apply for Harvard are students already above 90% student and they also have major achievements in other areas

i am an indian. right now i am in 12th and preparing really hard forJEE (the most reputed exam in india to get engineering colleges, especially the IIT’s) my english good, not too good but if i practice one month focussing on good vocab and accent then i am sure that i will have no problem with the language. so i dont have time till may 2019 to prepare for any foreign university. 1. So, let's start with the fact that you need to be an exceptionally hardworking, talented, ambitious person, if you aim to get a full financial aid at a reputed university. 2. You are going to need really good scores in your 9th-12th class. They look for consistent students, so that's important. 3. It's highly recommended to take IELTS or TOEFL and score good. Which for sure requires time and effort. 4. A good All India Rank in JEE MAINS can be of help. Otherwise if it's not good, don't mention it anywhere. 5. Application essays are a major part so you need to make your best shot on them. 6. Harvard is really really really hard to get, so try other universities too. 7. If you get to any IIT, that will be like saving a lot of efforts.

I know this is from six months ago, but if your family makes less than $65,000 a year and you're accepted, you pay no tuition and free room and board. I'm not sure about international students though
