How To Get Android Auto & Apple CarPlay In Your ND MX-5 Miata
Спорт
Here's a full guide on how to update your Miata firmware and install the new USB hub so you can get Android Auto & Apple CarPlay in your 2016+ ND Miata. This is for the North American model - USA, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, also known as 'NA N' on your Touch-screen. Be sure to download and read the instructions in the links below.
If your firmware is 29.00.000 or older you must at least update to “31.00.100A” before updating to any newer firmware! Follow the process shown in this video but use the 31.00.100A firmware files instead of the 70.00.100A files.

EDIT: NEW FIRMWARE RELEASE! If you have the 70.00.100A firmware and have echo problems with phone calls a new firmware has been released for North America as a fix. If your version is 31.00.100A and above you can go straight to this new firmware (Skipping 70.00.100A). This is a single file unlike the two files shown in this video. The new firmware is "cmu150_NA_70.00.335C_update.up" Apply this new firmware just like the firmware installation process shown in this video at 5:43 (This skips the fail-safe step completely):

This is still relevant 4 years later. Thanks for sharing all the goods! Appreciated.. and just watching it done helps!
Need to give you props. Following your instructions, I was able to install this in less than 2 hours. A+ would buy from again.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I was happy to find out through my research that the earlier Mazda 3 which didn't come with Apple Carplay would be upgraded to have it. That's huge. And I appreciate you showing all steps. Many DIY videos skip the crucial details, but you've shown them all.
This tutorial was super! Thanks again, can't say enough good things about the process and the files you made available. I'll subscribe for more good stuff.
Fantastic walkthrough! Knocked it out in about an hour and half (did most of the disassembly with the help of this video while the firmware updated). Thanks for posting!
Thanks for posting this great video. Upgraded my 2016 today and it took me 3 hours to install the new hub and cables using your video as a guide (already updated the firmware). You saved me hours of effort I am sure. Thanks again.
This is the best Step-by-Step walkthrough video of how to retro-fit AA on a ND Miata, thank you so much for the video! This helped me a lot in retro-fitting AA on my ND2
Did my install yesterday along with the FlyinMiata rear view camera. Everything worked! Your video gave me the confidence that I needed. Thanks for doing this.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This video, google drive folders, and newest firmware update made my install a breeze. This has to be the most compressive video out there; well organized too!
This might be the video tutorial to make me jump the fence and do the installation myself on my MX-5 ND. Props man!

@@BK_BT I dont even own and ND yet but I am looking at buying an ND2 tomorrow. The fact they dont have android auto is absurd, so this makes me feel that much better about getting the car.
I just finished with the install and it works perfect! (more important the other stuff still works too heated seats, power roof etc LOL)>. You're the man, I couldn't have done this without you. You've got a fan for life!!!
This is still relevant 3 years later. Followed this guide last night and replaced my screen while I was at it (it was delaminating). Thanks for the video!

Hey, I have a 2017 Miata. You said you replaced your infotainment screen. Do you know if it's possible to replace it with a 2019+ screen with the black bezel instead of silver? I want to do this on mine but not sure if there will be an issue.

@@DaveSimkus I'm wondering the exact same thing for my 2017 RF. Did you ever find out if the newer black bezel screen is compatible?
Firmware update performed flawlessly. Thank you for the files and the clear instructions. Kit arrives Friday, can't wait to finish the job!

thank you for this (about to go try the updates and install now), doing it on a CX-3 so the dash tear apart will be a little different but super helpful with the software walk through, I was reading the booklet then searched online for a video and glad yours came up.
Definitely appreciate this video. Mostly for the disassembly of the dash. Luckily for my my 19 RF was already on the newest firmware, just needed the box installed. Happy person this fine Sunday morning!
This is a great tutorial. If I ever need to do this, I'll get Mazda to do the install and spend a few extra dollars. Crazy how you need to disassemble the whole interior for such a small thing.
Thank you so much! I completed this project on a 2019 mx5. It does take about 3 hours. My wife will never drive a manual. So, due to the auto it did add more time and complexity. If you have an auto, the forms do not recommend removing the shift knob. Put it in “N” and remove the negative battery cable and get ready to move the console a lot.
Awesome video, I needed to remove some parts for other things and this video make me lose the fear to strip parts of my car and also showed me what I needed, THANKS!
Just done upgrading, works perfect with iOS 14. Great vid, appreciate it!
Thank you so much for doing this video. It was really helpful you did a video on your first install. Very informative when you would point out things as you came across them. This video made the install I did go smooth
Thank you for this! I was able to install the hub in about an hour. Thankfully, the OS already was at version 74.
Thank you so much for doing this tutorial! Saved me a lot of heartache and MONEY! You certainly earned my subscription buddy. Thanks again man!
@888 Werkes Thanks for the video. I installed yesterday, and couldn't have done it without your excellent tutorial. Your video saved me about $400!!! Much appreciated.
Success! I formatted a lexar usb stick with an old chrome book and that did the trick. Thanks for the inspiration!
JUST finished my install after following your video, everything went smooth. 2 things to note, you don't have to take apart the entire center console (command nob, arm rest, etc.) as the shifter boot comes off by itself with the little rubber part. 2nd is showing that the origional connectors for the CMU and bottom USB hub are not used and can just be tucked away in more detail would have been nice. Great vid though!
Good video. Great links. I used it all to do the upgrade to Android auto. Worked like a charm.
Thanks for the awesome video. Finished my install today and it works great.
Joji at the end is the cherry on top. nice video man.
Just used this video to help with my install. Although the firmware version is now higher than the one he uses, everything was very helpful. He made taking some of those panels off look easier than it was for me lol
Thanks for this How To ! It really helped me, because I bought a kit with documentation only in japanese, without wiring diagrams ! Besides, I really appreciated the explanations on how to remove the several parts.
Thank you so much for posting this video, I just did mine and very easy because of you.
Thank you so much for this great step by step video! With your information the installation of the wireless Apple CarPlay was really easy! 👍🏼

Thanks so much for slowly walking through this.
Great step by step guide, very Matt-esque ;)
Thanks for the great video. I did it under and hour. Saved me hundreds $$$! Very well DIY video. You are awesome!
i plan on modding my cmu and this doubled as a great tutorial of how to access the head unit!
I’m kicking myself for not thinking about this before I did the rear camera install, I would have been 75% of the panels out already … nice video
Thanks!!! This guide just saved me $500. Honestly thank you!!!
You my friend, are a legend. Thank you, from the UK
Just got a slightly used 2018 mx5... thanks for your clear directions! even though they just convinced me to spring for the dealer option (assuming it's about 300....) still, if that doesn't work, then I'll definitely be back....
Super helpful did the upgrade thanks for posting!!

Did you figure out a way to make yours black? I don't like the silver on mine either.
Installed the USB Hub today and it is working! Super excited to be using Google Maps and extra Music functionality with my Miata. You rock dude! Do you know if a future firmware release will support touch for Android Auto? The buttons work great, but it would be nice to be able to touch it as well.
@AlexisGitarre
3 жыл бұрын
can't you just enable touch via "MZD-AIO-TI" program? I think I had it working if I remember correctly but then I got rid of android auto because the program itself is pretty annoying.
For the automatic transmission: You can remove rubber piece without removing the whole armrest area! Even in P (though it would be slightly easier in N). To access and remove rubber mat you just need to pull that metallic circle around your shifter straight up. After pulling it up there is nothing that holds that rubber anymore and you can easily remove it.

@@BK_BTso, did you do it again for the wireless version?😂
I'm looking for the step-by-step written directions to remove the trim pieces as shown in your excellent video. Are they available somewhere or am I just missing seeing the link? Thanks!
Man, I wish you'd do one for my 2017 CX-5 :)
Your amazon link to the retrofit now shows a P3 and P3.2 (the latter being wireless carplay and wireless android). Would you say these would be safe to install assuming we do the latest firmware install as indicated? I'd rather take advantage of the wireless (no wire upgrade) if it indeed works on the 2016 MX5 ND1
In regards to the Mac OS.... Just format the usb as MS-DOS (FAT32). I just did that and it worked perfectly.
Thank you
I see kits that have USB-C now. Should I stick to the one you linked or is there a better version now?
Is there a way to install the kit but not update the firmware? I'm currently using Mazda tweaks for Android Auto which I like because of the touch screen functionality, but I would love to have more power coming from the updated USB hub to charge my device.
great vid. The directions say to disconnect battery. Do you really have to?
@Bryce Thomas, have you tried any the wireless android auto or apple car play modules and it work?
Does it work with 2019 sport trim? Because 2020 sport trim is not included apple CarPlay as well
Hey, where did you get the firmware? Is there a mazda hosted software site?
some good music taste
will the Mazda do the firmware upgrade under warranty if you ask them, and then install the retrofit kit yourself?
Can I update it to a higher version if I already have the Apple Car Play enabled? I have a CX-5 2018 and I updated it ti the version 70.00.00.100 and installed the Hub. I just want to update it to a higher version, I’m wondering if I can use the same Hub and use the USB Port 2?
Hi, thanks for the info and walkthrough. Does anybody have any information on where I can find the EU compatible firmware for the Mazda 6?
I just bought a 2019 Miata a little less than a month ago and was sad it didn't have this installed. But its good to know it is a possible DIY project, great video and you're awesome for providing links. But hoooly FAK the piece on amazon costs $162? Not sure I care that much about android auto.. lol Can't imagine what a dealer would want to install this, probably even more outrageous.

Very courageous to unsnap that interior without cracking anything or winding up with any mysterious extra leftover pieces, so thanks for the heads up. But what does Android Auto do for you above and beyond the Miata's standard Infotainment system?

Hey man! I’ve heard a lot about it but I sold my ND2 quite a while ago. I wish I could help.
still procrastinating. Can I update the firmaware without installing apple carplay? in other words just have it ready for the add? It is the firmware update than most scares me lol
This should be exactly the same for the abarth 124 right?
I’ve tried this firmware update. I cannot get the car to find the files on the stick.
My firmware is 59.somethingsomething. So, that should be newer than 31.00.100A, right? But my MX-5 still doesn't have Android Auto?
Hey thanks for the tutorial, i downloaded the 70.00.335C from your drive but the MD5 and SHA doesn't match your readme. Is there another link I can try downloading that update firmware from? Thanks so much!

I'm getting a MD5 of CEF798EDD2D4BEA2B3311FD6CB1AA501 and SHA-1 of 3875E722D068EE1CABB13ABE9CDF8BB50AAB33C3 , i downloaded the file twice, both times my checksum came out to be the above.
Did you disconnected the battery before hardware installation?
Where is the pdf file or link to remove automatic shift knob pls
I don't understand why I get (no new update packages available) even though I put the software in the USB drive
I own a 2019 MX-5 Grand Touring RF manual and it doesn't have Android Auto. Why did Mazda even design that module that way, making it difficult to upgrade or update? I don't want to go through all that trouble or even let the dealer do it since I've very picky about scratches, smudges, rattles and what have you. Couldn't they have just design that particular module by a couple of screws and merely pull it out and replace it in a similar fashion?
How do I get the EU firmware, please?
Now all you need to do is tell me how it works with Android auto. Not use if I understand how to use AA? Great video.
I have firmware 70.00.335. Am I good to go? Thanks.
Will this also work on a 124 Spider?
