How to Fool IR Security Cameras

Ғылым және технология

►WHAT IS THIS
In this video, I explore a weakness in security cameras (specifically the night vision variety) that renders a person incognito in its view.
DISCLAMER: I imagine this is not the best thing to try in public; don't try this yourself, just enjoy the science.

If you're worried that somebody will use this against you, putting an IR filter over your camera will prevent this issue.

This might be of interest to you, when I was in the service the military still had the old M-60 tanks, if you look at one of them there's a square spotlight (that usually has a canvas cover over it) on top of the main guns barrel just where it comes out of the turret that produces about 1 million candle power, one of it's primary uses was for when you know that some sneaky Russians (cold war era of course) were looking at you through night vision equipment you could hit them with a shot of 1 million candle power light and listen to them scream out there in the dark because you just burned the retina out of one of their eyes.

@@blessed_be People like that are a real privilege to deal with, aren't they? I think that a 10 watt or higher IR LED would do the trick. A parabolic dish may help too ;) In the daytime, all that I could think of is a visible-light LED or a laser (provided that you didn't destroy their camera with it, that'd be destruction of property). P.S. I should mention that this may convince her that you have something to hide and she'd step up her game. Maybe it's best just to ignore her.

So if my neighbor has their one camera facing my yard and I want my privacy protected. If I get a IR right. Mount it pointed at their light and wire it that would drown out their video of my property? I wanna run it 24/7 as the only time they would see it is when they video their camera footage and no longer see my yard. Is this all pretty much correct?

Unless you can bend light like the predator and use it to cloak yourself. & even then someone might still see the shimmer. Fortunately most surveillance cameras are not manned. & if the US ends up like China it would be impossible to man them because there's not enough people. I assume if theyre looking for someone specific then some kind of AI will hunt them thru facial rec & notify whoever when they get a hit. But with this they'll never get a hit. I don't think.

Except most cameras looking a vehicle number plates aren’t using IR, they are visible (hence the flash, or bright lights on those motorway average speed ones). And also, number plates have reflective surrounds and non-reflective characters, so at any kind of distance, you probably wont drown any IR camera, just nicely illuminate your number (see the bit in the video where he held his hand in front of his face and the LED, the backscatter illuminated his face despite the hat shielding from above). This only works for the “casual surveillance” cameras on domestic properties, small businesses and civic locations.

Great idea. I think I'd like to try it using IR rope lights, and embed them along the seam of the brim. That way even your hat would be less noticeable (no big IR LED up top), and the rope lights would wrap around perhaps better obscuring your face from all angles. You seem to have all the tools necessary to check, so perhaps order some IR rope lights, and give them a whirl? Thanks for a great video. :)

Take it a step further. Put IR LED's in the shirt collar for 360 protection. Then make clothing with Faraday Cages embedded in it to protect you from the massive RF pollution we get bombarded with everyday and also embed fractal antennas in the clothing that can be turned on to charge all your devices by pulling electricity from the atmosphere. The meshed metals in the clothing will also make it Tazer Proof as well. Also, dont forget to use Bullet Proof Material. If you make this and market it - you will be a Billionair in 2-3 years.

Just out of curiosity what about reflective tape? How does that effect the cameras?

When an IR light is shined on reflectors it looks just like a light.

The hat worked ok, but I would advise putting multiple lights (including on the sides, as when you turn, your face becomes more visible) and making them far more subtle, although I get your model was only as a proof of concept. Though all in all, I think I will continue just carrying a balaclava in winter and a bandana/hat/sunglasses combo in warmer weather in case I need to suddenly conceal my identity, as ultimately this is too much to carry unless you knew you were going to use it, and only good at creating glare for a camera while appearing to others as if you were not trying to hide your identity (assuming the lights were hidden enough, otherwise they would mark you as odd and be MORE likely to remember you), if its dark enough for security cams to not be visible that means you would need light yourself probably, and if anyone spots you, you are screwed anyway, so like I said facemask is still the better route, but no hate or anything, still very interesting video, and I never really thought of this concept, though I should have.

wonder if theres any type of light that could be used that would be able to block out a camera on a phone. like if somebody were to be recording me on their iPhone in daylight, it wouldnt be able to see my face. is something like that even possible? curious...
