How to fix your Toyota Lexus Window Switch Problem
Пікірлер: 94
You're welcome- I'm proud of you for finding the solution!
I still have my old parts if someone needs to repair the front passenger side. Wood grain and all. I replaced the control board and had the whole door panel off trying to find the problem. It was at least 4-5 years ago. Great video Brian. One of the few channels I subscribe to.
Its awesome when you figure out the problem and fix it. Your very good at diagnosing problems.
@SYNTHETICDARKNESSRX8 Thanks- it seems things really aren't made to last at all. When I look at all the plastic on cars I wonder if/how/why would anyone in the future restore them?
Hey, you deserve a medal for taking the time to post this. I've looked around online the last couple days to diagnose this problem and your video perfectly matches my malfunction (and the solution). I now have enough info to tackle this baby in the next day or so. I'm a fairly experienced solderer so I think I can do it & I'm totally with you on the challenge & its "got to be fixed" before replaced mentality. Many thanks!
I'm so proud of you! Much love!
Brian, I liked your "Shiny on my knife esse" joke! Funny! Great video!
thanks Brian! I really appreciate how you instruct! enough to get it and not feel like an idiot..... and the shiney with my knife ese... good stuff vato.....
I just fixed my Lexus window with this. At first, I read Richard Huang's comment and thought it must be the relay and even ordered one but it was the wrong one. Turns out they are now obsolete. So I tried this fix, twice and it works. Hooray!!!

oh no. It only worked for a couple of days. I just tried it heating up the solder points again but it did not work. This is the driver's side window. Any other ideas? I can't find the relay anywhere
Your a good son looking after your mom like that. Good on ya mate. Cheers.
@AlchemistLair Less landfill filler because you are doing the purest and best form of recycling AND more disposable income that you don't have to spend on parts. It's a total win!
On some Toyota's when you replace the window switch, you hafta initialize the window module in order for the auto up & down to work. It's super easy to do too. You just hold the switch in the down position until it stops & do the same when it goes up. The module forgets where the full down & up positions are when you take them out. I personally think it's way too much crap to be stuffing inside a door & that's why I like the crank windows on my '64 Ford Fairlane & my '84 Dodge W150. Great Video!
@Downeast1100 It's the brushes to motor coil contact- contaminated/weak connection- spring tension.
@anyheck I have some, but I didn't get it out for the vid. I did have to resort to it. Good advice!
Great video, its very common nowadays in the electronics industries to repair solder joints! They call it reflowing, instead of using a soldering iron take a hot air gun and run it over the board! A lot less time consuming and does the same job!
@contagiousFX It was those pins at the green board "bagillion pin connector" as shown at 0:54
Well done, its way too easy to buy a new board , if I cant figure out what went wrong at least I go down trying, learning can be so much fun and I will save this vids as well. Thanks !!
@Dicofole Sometimes it just takes FOREVER to get parts in in the first place. I just figure you can't break that which is already broken- it can only get better.
Good call. Thanks
Good job! I've actually had to redo a few RX8 HVAC units cause of cracking. Things nowadays are done like crap, and seeing it in factories, it's a wonder everything works at all lol.
It's probably better than new thanks to your perseverance with the iron. Pick up some solder wick aka desoldering braid. It's copper braid impregnated with flux. Helps if you bridge joints as you mentioned. Also some finer gauge solder .020 or .025 makes life easier on parts that small. Thanks for making your videos.
@peacockealot Interesting! That would have to be a really HOT air gun! These were tough to get to flow.
Your welcome- thank YOU!
I saw a Ron Paul sign! I am a bigger fan of yours now than I already was! :) Go Ron Paul!
Hey you shaved. great video. Your a cool guy helping mom out. Aloha
@wenbiaoliang I'm happy you are educated! All I do everyday is solve problems for people in complex systems. I HAVE to know what's going on if something isn't working. I study history and politics not because I like it, but because I'm curious why things are so broken. Dr. Paul is pretty sharp he's been consistently correct on so many things on the Fed Res, Drug war, Oil wars, and Economy. He's a real champion for personal freedom and national peace time. What's not to love?
hi jim in ireland just got 93 430sc is there anny problemns i should look out for thanks
@spelunkerd I'm not a fan of it.... at all. BMW Brake pad wear indicators have to initialize too. If you don't know that it can be a huge headache!
@Bonfield2002 You're welcome- right on!
@DJDevon3 lol I'm glad I did. That module was $320! I called to quote it out after I was done. That way I wasn't stressed while fixing it.
Brian, if you use a jewlers loupe you can see a break in the solder quickly.
Does Lexus still have those boards? I have same problem with 1992 SC400.
Hey bri, I noticed its a Lexus, I also noticed how it was trying to go through its "Learning phase" where it would move 4 or 5" and stop. The way to "Initialize" the power windows on those is by pushing and holding the down button for 15 seconds then pulling up the switch for 15 seconds and that will make it relearn its "limits" this is done at each door for each window. I will also relearn the one touch up/down by doing this too. Lexus ES300-350 GS300-350 LS400-460 all are the same.
What is the name of the new part so I can order have tried the sarder but it did now work what is the part number to order?
Great video ❤ thank you 👍
hey great video u ever fix? an over heating window motor... do a video on that!
Thank you for sharing sir! It's a great share..fun stuff and saves a $ along with landfills.
Please what is the cause of no light indications at passenger window button,lock, no light buttom of the when open, no light at the handle and no light at passenger sun shade. What could be the cause on 2008 lexus GS 350
Thanks for the video. I had mine do the same thing on my F-150. Leonard
You wouldn't believe how many technicians in many repair fields (computer, appliances, etc) are now basically parts changers... This is so sad they only know how to diagnose which part is bad but not why and they simply change it for a brand new one, we call this disposable society! Great video like always, keep them coming!
To make this job a lot easier you might want to buy a 4 x jewellers eye loupe from an electronics parts place or a pair of el cheapo 4 x glasses. Where I live you can get the glasses for $6.00 from the likes of $2.00 shops not sure what you guys call these places and they make looking for dry joints a hell of a lot easier. Fine gauge resin cored solder from an electronics parts would produce a more reliable result than reflowing what’s already there. Good work fixing it bet your moms happy.
how did you get that wood grain piece off?
Very helpful, part name would help, very hard to find at OEM
good job it help me solve my problem. thanks
what brand solder gun do you use?
I thought that my black plastic buttons were worn out, Is it always the green board? If I need the green computer board, where do I get that.
thank you!
We have thesame problem but my right front window is it can go down from my driver side switch but cannot go up, only if you press up
I had some trouble with my 2008 Lexus after I disconnected the battery. I followed the initialization protocol, but the passenger side window wouldn't go up under the direction of the driver's control. I disconnected the battery again, then I followed the initialization again in sequence, and it worked fine after that. My problem was not at the end device. Why initialization has to be so complicated is beyond me....
Those small black contact points are just like a computer keyboard,there a pain in the ass to get working again,try adding some dielectric grease,it surprisingly worked for me.
It's a quote from the movie "Bubble Boy" You're welcome- good for you!
@MrMatthew1969 Who knows?
@84W150 Thanks!
thanks i just bought a rx300 and my back window goes down Everytime i take the windows of lock , didn't do it yet but hope that's the problem.
When I installed a new main switch, I could not lock the door with the remote key! When I press the remote control key to lock the door, it will sound an alarm, indicating that the door is not locked! What should I do?
@nutschTM It's automatic! = D
Thanks. I LIKE IT.
We have become such a "Remove and Replace" society. I love making things work again without just scrapping and buying replacement parts. Thank for the videos!
Because some people don't know what heat shrink is used for. Heat-shrink tubing is a shrinkable plastic tube used to insulate wires, providing abrasion resistance and environmental protection for stranded and solid wire conductors, connections, joints and terminals in electrical work. It can also be used to repair the insulation on wires or to bundle them together, to protect wires or small parts from minor abrasion, and to create cable entry seals, offering environmental sealing protection and are approved for use by UL224-2010 ASTM D 2671. It is a versatile electrical insulator and is inert to most chemicals and solvents. Additionally, it is highly resistant to extreme heat, cold, and Ultraviolet radiation, making it an excellent material for heat-shrink tubing applications. Elastomeric tubes maintain high flexibility even at low temperatures and meet stringent international specifications. Their operating temperature range is -75 to 150 °C. The material is resistant to many chemicals (including diesel and petrol) and has good resistance to abrasion, even in severe environmental conditions. A common shrink ratio is 2:1. Polyolefin tubes, the most common kind,[7] have maximum continuous-use temperatures from -55 to 135 °C, and are used by the military, aerospace and railway industries.

We will let viewers decide if they want to purchase a relay assembly that was put together with heat shrinks or relay assembly on printed circuit board with solid solder connections.
At 320 bucks I would hope you could get one at a junk yard . I know it a crap shoot getting used parts at a junk yard but maybe it was a car the person never wanted the window down. I got lucks for some parts off a 2003 Montana . It had over 100k miles but certain parts looked like that had never been used.
@09victoryrc Good to know- thanks!
if you had changed the battery of the car or the battery is almost dead, first charge the battery than do the reset of the window protection sys, fist step - make sure that the the window child protection button is released off second step -lower all the windows halfway, than close the window one by one using the the button in witch door maintain pressed two seconds after the window already closed. The reset is closed After all these steps the buttons off the conducter side should operate all the windows ..make sure the window child protection button is off.
@CURBECK That's right. I didn't know that at the time. Thanks for your expertise! Thumbs up this comment!
Your awesome!!!
or purchase aftermarket power window switch. i did this in my rav4 with manual windows. $150
My window it can go down in the passenger side but not going up
You're welcome. REMEMBER these have to "learn" Look at CURBECK's comment on that. They basically have to go all the way up and down before working/responding properly.
The switch in my van is acting up. I may have to try this and see what happens. Although its only when I touch it, works fine for everyone else. I swear cars have feelings and opinions. I'm always cussing that thing out. I think I hurt its feeling and its holding a grudge.
Nice try Brain ...good job
i got a problem with master window switch in my rx300 (2001) while i click button take the driver window down right back windows automaticly moves down also. how to fix this problem? thanks in advance
@bum408

Baki Torpaq disconnect the master switch. When you plug it back, the LED should blink. Now, push switch down; one touch only, not double click. Hold down for about ten seconds. You should hear a click inside door Pull up one click, hold ten secs. Should hear a click as well. That should do.

Thanks for answer but i tried it as well it should fix a problem with closing windows automatically till to the end, really i have also that but problem i did it once it fixed it but from some time when i switch the window up and when it reaches to the top it automatically switches down it thinks that there are something. but i am not about that problem. My problem is that when i switch down or pull up driver side window right back windows also moves, i think there are some connecting between them.
@iworkforbudlight Thanks
Ron Paul +1
Brian..I like your Politics ..Son Rand is also a good person.. Libertarian is more of a religion ..Right?
Thanks for posting this video, it is great. I had the same problem with my passenger and driver side windows. I followed your directions, it got better but I still had a problem. I ended up replacing the CR2-12 volt relay on both sides. The CR2-12V relay is not available any more, but there is a great replacement available from Amazon: www.amazon.com/CR2-12V-Relay-Lexus-RX300-window/dp/B07C58B3YV/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1523759435&sr=8-5&keywords=cr2-12v
@MrJayChhun lol
alex2324, This relay you are suggesting is assembled in someone's garage with heat shrinks. This device is not reliable and even dangerous. Please look for a relay that has been tested for automotive use. Replace your relays before it is too late.

Nowrooz Shabani, you don't know what you're talking about. What do you think cable insulation is made of? Heat shrink is used all over new cars under the hood, on wires, under the dash, everywhere. Heat shrink tubing is rated for 600V AC at 250°C (480°F). Anyway how do you put a relay together with heat shrink?? LOL!! Do you even know what a relay is or how they work? The relay is an internal mechanical contact triggered by a small momentary 12Vdc voltage coming from a switch. How do you put a relay together with heat shrink? lol!! Nowrooz, do you even know what heat shrink is used for? Apparently you don't.
The junk yard told me $700+ for a used driver side electric window unit.
A quasi-informative video that, unfortunately, does not identify the true source of failure: the relay. You can try Brian's approach but prepare for disappointment. A relay can click and sound like it is working but the internal contacts can still be defective. The relay is the true point of failure and simply needs to be replaced. Not a difficult repair but takes soldering skills and sourcing the part takes time as it is obsolete in the US. I ordered mine from China via Alibaba Express waited 3 weeks, swapped and it works like new. The correct solution is posted on the Lexus forums.

+Richard Huang Sorry, forgot to state that the part is for a 2001 Lexus RX300. It almost certainly applies to other years and, perhaps other models and Toyota. The relay is the large black rectangular component approx 20mmx12mmx12mm. 7-pins. Take a look and order the same part number that you have.

Where can you find this for $4.00? Cheapest I found was $40.00 on eBay
Those switches are something like $300.
Design fail. Horrible ides to use capacitance based switches in this environment.
