I found this video a couple years ago when having this issue with my JDM Camry Gracia and couldnt find the issue with all sensors sending and reading properly, so I got the resonator and all to do this repair, but never bothered to replace it because I'm lazy. It finally conked fully out this week, just replaced that resonator and BOOM everything is perfect again. You are a godsend with this video my man, if it wasn't for this, I'd probably still be losing my mind trying to find out what's wrong.

06/20/2022, Hi Jeff, I have a 1998 Toyota Rav4, 2 Door, 127K miles. There are only a total of 2 on the Islands with 2 doors. The Odometer needle at Zero, Mileage Blank screen and there is Erratic shifting was the only problem I had as you stated in the video with your vehicle. Before discovering this video, I called several companies on the mainland USA because I'm in Hawaii if they could repair the issue. None of then could fix this particular model. There was a guy in Hawaii that could fix it but for a whopping $550! Da Hecks? So, I proceeded to watch the video and did exactly what you showed step by step. I had to watch it over and over again cause I didn't know how to solder. But as for me, the only frustrating procedure was to disconnect, take out and reinstall the instrument cluster. You all might want to change out the halogen bulbs to LED ones while you are at it in my opinion. Miraculously, it worked! Jeff, you are awesome! I can now get my annual safety check for the vehicle. Is there any donation link? Thanks for creating the video!

Jeff, I just did what you initially did and told us about. Today, before placing the cluster though in the refrigerator for a while(couple of hours) I did bend the resonator (blue thing with 3 legs. it did not break)) and put everything back. I placed it in the car (4 connectors my Corolla 1998 LE) and after it started I did take again pictures of the odometer (same figures!) but this time i did drive the car around the building and.... I saw the speedometer working!! Bravo! I could record some of the speedometer action without killing myself in the process!! Just keeping you updated.TKS

This is the gift that keeps on giving. Very similar presentation 1998 Toyota Sienna with 244K miles. When hot day (we are in Texas) there is no odometer display or speedometer operation. On cool mornings it works fine and is a happy camper. This has been so frustrating. Your technique for soldering is novel but very acceptable. This video was very well done and your documentation is extremely solid. I will report back success / failure after part(s) arrive and procedure completed. I just did this resonator replacement on my roommates 98 Camry. The speedometer and odometer just wouldn't work if the car was left out in the sun. I put in a cheap $25 VSS that seemed to work fine but the car still didn't shift correctly if the car was left in the sun. I bought the part you listed from Digi-key, and removed some of the solder with the wick. I used my pencil tip on the soldering station to very carefully bend the pins straight and push them through the holes. I have a lot of experience soldering but it was definitely a little difficult. I used some mini needle nose pliers to drop the new part in place and soldered it so it looked factory. The car runs great, the speedo and odometer worked right away and the car seems to run smoother and more peppy. While the cluster was out, we replaced the factory bulbs with Sylvania 194 bulbs and used a greeen Sharpie permanent marker to color in the bulbs. Most the factory green caps were damaged from the bulb heat and ripped when we peeled them off. The difference is night and day, the car definitely seems much fresher now. Thanks for the video man, you saved me a lot of time.

I put the same part Digi Key 490-18260-ND into my 99 Avalon and it cooked the speedometer board. After carefully soldering the part to speedometer, I immediately smelled electrical issue when on turning on the ignition. I removed the speedometer to see the board had a burn on it. Doing a continuity test on my newly soldered connection posts (3) there was no problem between them, no short. This is a similar "replacement part" to the original part suggested in another video that is no longer available PN # x902-ND - maybe the problem? I've bought a used cluster to install. Best to ya's, God Bless...

Hi Jeff. Any idea whether this solution works for a 2004 Lexus GX470? There seems to be a common scenario for that vehicle where the speedometer is stuck at 0 but the odometer continues to function (and thankfully the transmission shifting also behaves itself) which is of course different to the 3 symptoms you've described. I'd give it a try only I have to order the part first and without having taken out the cluster yet I can't site the component to make sure it is the same value - so I guess my first question is do you know if the component is the same for that model vehicle? Or anyone able to direct me to a circuit diagram (or photo even) for the GX470 speedo itself?

Hi Jeff. Just wondering if the resonator needs to go in one orientation or does it not matter? I have a 98 Camry that has rare intermittent issues with the Speedo dropping to zero when driving. Car still goes OK while moving but OD OFF light comes on and sometimes there are auto shift issues up changing from a stop start. I’ll try your repair recommendation. Thanks for posting. Kind regards. Craig

Thanks Jeff. I replaced the speed sensor to fix a transmission fault breakdown a few years ago. The 98 Camry 2.2L has been mostly OK since then except for the occasional speedo zeroing while driving, check engine light ON, OD OFF light ON and sometimes not changing up from first to second gear. The error seems to resolve itself after about 15-60 seconds but I’m concerned about unresponsiveness especially in traffic. So it’s potentially a safety concern I think. I was thinking the issue could be a faulty/sticky 1-2 shift solenoid but it changes sometimes even when I get the speedo fault. I’ve ordered the ceramic resonator and will replace once received and let you know. You’ve posted such helpful advice. Thanks again! Craig

Temperature can certainly affect the resonator’s ability to function. I have heard of others bending the resonator slightly to “wake it back up”, but that is not a lasting solution. I recommend replacing it rather than bending it. I’m sure you can collect resonators from the clusters of vehicles in the junkyard, but the concern would be getting one with the same weakness as before. You may feel different, but it just seems like replacing the resonator with a brand-new, upgraded one for $5 would be less of a hassle than trying to retrieve one from a junkyard. But if you’re just enjoying the long journey doing it, more power to you, lol!
