How to fix the Smitty Built XRC Tire Carrier (Hint, this one saves weight & space) Jeep Cherokee XJ
Like many other XRC tire carrier owners, I have long been dissatisfied with aspects of my Smitty Built Tire Carrier on my Jeep Cherokee. I address two of the major issues in this video, the extra weight in the largely unoccupied space between the tire and the trunk. And the free floating retention bolt for the carrier arms.
This is part one in a series of videos on improving this tire carrier in lieu of replacing it outright. If you want me to continue this series; have thoughts or suggestions for how I could have done this differently/better, comment down below!
This is not a sponsored video (obviously). I purchased this product with my own money and my statements reflect my opinions from my personal experience with ownership of this product, not that of any business.

Dude, great video. I’ve been thinking the same about all that wasted space great job! By the way, love your video style it screams early years of KZread. Lots of character. Great job dude.
I own the same tire carrier for my 94 Cherokee and you're right: not only is that thing very heavy, there is a lot of space between the carrier and the back of the gate. Thanks for sharing!
Holy cannoli, I didn't recognise the facial hair!!! Your SYE Install video was a lifesaver when I first bought an XJ!

Glad to be back at it!!
I have this bumper and the Midwest Jerry Can from Harbor Freight fits snug. Cool mod, looking forward to seeing what's next.
That's definitely a massive improvement. Where did you get your tail light covers?
Hey Smitty Built, redesign this monstrosity already!! There is a market for a more sleek design.

I think it came to the market in the early 2000/late90s, it is certainly time for a updated design!!
Great job, did this improve the swingout bouncing around? I hate seeing/feeling mine bouncing around over bumpy roads. Figured removing some of the leverage might help.

It did, further I think welding the capture nut into the bottom of the hinge space helped a lot. Haven’t bit the bullet but been playing with some different latch designs to see if I can further decrease the bounce in that location.
